The border dudes on the US/Mexico are like this with the questions, I could see my dad's eyes flmaing with anger as he is forced to answer calmly.

The guy kinda annoys me, he should have just shut up and went across the border. The border patrol are annoying as fuck, but they are a necessary part of international commerce/traveling. He sounds like such a bitch when he gets arrested.

I honestly think that the point of these border guards isn't actually to intercept potentially harmful or contraband items, but more or less to assuage the fears of the general American public of some ill-defined threat.

The first officer was completely out of bounds and unreasonable, but the second was a bit more understanding of the situation, and I feel the Canadian guy was a bit smart-talking and provoking. If he was cooperative with the second officer this probably would have been a lot smoother.

Men in charge of garbage disposal are sad sacks of shit that fucked up their lives and have to go get one of those useless jobs that make society better for us.
Border guards are worse in that they don't actually do anything for society.

i got a similar treatment when i crossed the border from Niagara, after a short conversation about what i had been doing in canada i got told to park my car, they brought me to a waiting room, then told me i was gonna be searched, and proceeded to pull out everything in my car and inspect it with a drug dog. i was definitely not as combative as this guy though, i had nothing to hide and just wanted to leave. detained me for about 25-30 mins and let me go. this clip sounds pretty damning, especially the conclusion, but i can't help but feeling that the guy getting detained blew it out of proportion. had he complied, he probably would have gotten treated the same way i did. these people have a serious job to do, and do NOT have time for BS.

While I may agree with you on ideological bases, in practice, I'd certainly want an active police force that responds to situations in which they have a reasonable suspicion of malicious activity. Any person walking around the mall with his wife might not be suspicious, but I'd certainly want someone who was, say, shuffling around the mall, looking around, and leaving unattended bags behind trash cans to be at least questioned.

Their job is to ask those questions, when I was coming from Mexico into the US for a funeral, you wouldn't believe the questions they asked my dad, but its what they have to do. No one (myself included) likes the border process, but its gotta be done.
