John Wooden's Pyramid of Success

kdog3683 United States916 Posts June 12 2010 08:52 GMT #1 Please don't misinterpret this. I love John Wooden. I love his coaching. He's amazing. I love his pyramid of success. But as I read it, is it really a pyramid? http://www.coachwooden.com/index2.html A pyramid would imply that each ascending block is derived from below. Looking at it, I do not see how bottom blocks build up to the top. A few of them make sense, but in general, it seems each level is just a new set of maxims to live by. Thoughts / rebuttal?

So basically, the order of importance of those virtues is not top: concluison/pineacle of all the precedents, but bottom: most important and crucial ones. And damn that audio freaked me up O.o

"Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best that you are capable of becoming." If that mouthful were true then most people have never been successful. Or is it OK as long as one made the effort, even if one didn't "become the best that one is capable of becoming"? I just don't get it. I never felt the need for strange definitions like that. Though the concepts he talks about are alright, though it doesn't seem very new or innovative to me, but fairly common sense.

Level 2: These are qualities that help a person apply themselves to a productive task. These can carry over to nearly any endeavor you attempt. Level 3: These are the specific skills and abilities for whatever line of work you are in. It also emphasize that at some point you must not only be excellent as an individual, but fit into a team. Level 4: This is the polish that you put onto your Level 3 skills. If you can execute them seamlessly then you will be more than the sum of your parts. Level 5: The end result.
