Hey, so this weekend I was at a rather large bush party(~200ish people)this weekend with some people I know, and there was a really kickass DJ with a strobe light and everything. We've all had a number of drinks now and I'm extremely social when I'm drunk. I can meet someone for 5 minutes and have no awkwardness or silence and feel like I'm best friends with them. Anyhoo, all my friends head over to the dance floor(I.E. large dirt field) and this chick I met tells me to come dance, so reluctantly I go with her.
Now I pretty much hate dancing and never wanted to learn, but this year I'll be 19(= legal age in Canada) and going to clubs and parties and stuff is going to be kind of a letdown if I don't want to and can't dance. Don't get me completely wrong here, I hate dancing because I don't really know how and I suck at it for the most part, but I know I should learn.
So we get to the dance floor and practically everyone is grinding, and I begin to feel really lost. Everyone there is around my age, 18, and I'm trying to pick up on how to dance by watching people around me, but we are in the middle of no where in the middle of the night and I can't really even see, so that didn't leave me to well off.
I know what grinding is, but I'm not really too confident in myself when it comes to it, so I was wondering if you guys have any tips or tricks or guidelines or anything for advice. I don't think I completely failed and looked like a tard, but I'm sure the I wasn't great either. Eventually, I started to put my hand on one of the girls waists I was with as she stayed with me for a while, but I think I was probably late on that.
Tips? Tricks? Advice? Guidelines? When do you start getting real close to her and how do you follow up? Any do's or don't's, things to avoid, watch out for, pick up on, etc?

Seriously, if you go to clubs, no one "dances." They just wave their arms and legs around which is basically going with the beat. I'm not sure if your getting the impression that to be good at dancing, you have to know hip-pop, break dancing, sick ass moves, etc. 90% of the guys in clubs don't know how to dance like that. They just thrust their hips on girls or wave their arms. The important thing is girls don't care if you know how to dance or not. They just like the skinship involved in it. (This is all in reference to dancing at parties and clubs.)

honestly just keep practicing and you'll get better. know that you will look like a fool for the first few times and then you will start find something that works. the first times are always the hardest and the most awkward but with a little experience you'll realize it is pretty easy

are you in college? girls kind of expect to be grinded on if you're dancing with them (just the two of you). if you're trying to grind, put your hands on her hips or arms from the start (you don't have to pull her tight to you or anything, but put it there to make your intention known). always make some eye contact before you approach or else it's creepy. then just slowly progress further and further... increase rhythm, intensity, etc. turn her around, grind body to body. if she wants to make out, go for it, and i'm not going to explain the rest. if she wants to slow it down or stop at anytime, take it in stride and be cool with it. don't ever physically force yourself on a girl.

If you're really lost (which I doubt you are) think of it as just a sort of rocking left-right in time with the music. If you want to be more "serious", then bending your knees ('gettin' low') usually makes it more interesting/enticing for your partner, but only do that after a while (aka. don't get freaky right when you start etc.).
Umm yeah, you can't really be 'taught' how to grind, I guess its kinda natural, in the sense that you're just shifting your weight from leg to leg (with her legs parallel/on urs ofc).
You can grind front (facing eachother) and back (self-explanitory). I feel its a matter of preference, but one tip you might want is when you're grinding front, kinda hold one of her (i hope its a 'her' ^^ ) hand's and slowly raise it in the air, as if you're the pole and she's dancing on you (except your fingers are entertwined...)
But really man, don't worry about not being able to do flashy/ "impressive" shit on a dance-floor. Where you're at, 1. no one will care (unless you make a scene and fail) and 2. you won't have space to do anything apart from grind. Personal anecdote: I do breakdance, and I (technically) can dance Salsa, Tango and basic Ballroom dance... NOT ONCE have I ever been able to use those skills because there was never enough room, so don't sweat it. Just don't be a clutz, don't grope or hold too tight and u'll be fine

Don't dance like that guy. Girls dig guys who dance with a manly style. The guy in the video moves way too feminine. Sure if you got nice move you can impress her and attract her that way but if you just move manly she will be attracted thanks to her instincts or subconsciousness or whatever
I went clubbing a couple times and felt exactly like you did. No idea what to do and completely awkward when it came to "grinding". Now I usually just drink at the clubs and chill and if theres enough room and the music is right, BREAKDANCE. Get a couple numbers and then leave the club lol

Honestly you shouldn't be drunk to the point where you are tipsy and walk straight. At that point dancing with you is out of the question for most girls unless they are drunk as well. You should just drink enough where you have enough confidence to let yourself be relaxed on the dance floor.
I hate drunk guys on the dance floor who go from girl to girl trying to dance without giving a shit for the people around them. I have personally beat the shit out of a drunk guy harassing my friends while they were just trying to have a fun time.

OP you should see if there are any dance lessons/classes/groups at your school. Meet chicks and learn some moves - not that it takes any skill to grind, but it all comes together once you know how to use your body.
Don't grind if your a guy. I used to be the same, and seriously dancing freestyle makes you look like an idiot.
I learned bboying (break - dancing), and after 1-2 years I've gone from being absolutely shit scared of the d-floor, to just walking straight up and busting some moves and getting some cheers. Learn something technical like popping, or breaking, anything with rigidly defined moves and that will help you out heaps. Then once you get good you can add your own "flava" to it and hit the beat.
And yeah once you get to that point its easy-mode. You don't need to dance with a girl, the girls will come to you.

The normal way I go about it is either just go up to a girl face to face and ask if she'd like to dance. Or if she's already dancing (happens like 70% of the time) with her friends just come up behind her, put your hands on her hips, and ask if she'd like to dance. Being shot down happens all the time, don't worry about it (even though you'll probably be embarrassed the first few times). One of the easiest ways to do this is bring a buddy and just go looking for 2 girls that are friends all night, having a wing-man makes the experience more fun too. Just ask with confidence.
The dancing portion... basically just put your hands on her hips and let her do the moving. Keep her body close and just try to keep up. Like the guy above me said if she's digging on you turn her around and make-out (this makes it harder to keep dancing to the beat but who cares), while keeping one leg in between hers. One thing I like to do if she's digging on you and you're still dancing on her back is slowly run my hands up and down her legs a few times, and/or just get a little bit firmer grip letting her know you're digging on her too.
EDIT: I'm 19 and just got done with my first year in college also. I pretty much went to frat parties once or twice every weekend at school and have been going to clubs since I was 15-16. Grinding is pretty much how it is at parties/clubs now a days.

Haha ok but actually dancing is going to make things easier for you anyway. If you're dancing with a girl and it actually looks cool and you look like you're having fun, all the other girls around you are going to notice and you'll basically set to dance with anyone you want for the night. It's a pretty amazing effect actually and you have to experience it to realize how much all the girls want to be with the guy who's actually having fun (instead of the guy who just wants to get as close to a girl's ass as he can lol).

I saw this in a documentary about sexual attraction. They had several guys dancing behind a screen and later ask 50 females which one they thought was the most attractive and 35-40 females chose the guy who didn't know how to dance but looked manly doing so. True story Don't think of grinding like any other dance style because it really is more like sex and less like dancing. If you pull out all your moves like the guy in the video, it is more likely that the girl will feel intimidated because most girls won't have the skills to keep up with you. If you want to impress with your dancing skills, do so in a solo dance or be sure that the girl knows how to dance as well, otherwise it will lead to awkwardness.

The guys already pretty much summed everything there is to dancing/grinding at clubs and parties. Now I'm a pro competitive Latin dancer so will share some extra tips that did not get mentioned already. First of all be confident - the girl does not have any idea about your dancing skills and most likely doesn't care much, as 99% of the guys are just like you. Now you can either be confident, because you have cold nerves or just drink enough. Girls love confidence. So when you get on the dancefloor follow her body movements and body language (2 very different things). By following or mirroring her body movements (say she has her back turned to you and swings hips left and right with some variation - you do the same, while holding her on the waist and not overdoing with skin contact, at least at first). Once you are comfortable with this react to her body language, it's easily readable most of the time and will end up in a more intimate grinding, making out or simply continuing dancing for a while. Just follow what you observe and what she does.
This is completely enough to be good on the dancefloor. Girls don't expect you to be really good on the dancefloor so if you don't freak them out you are good to go. However there are some extra things you can do if you are confident enough and get positive body language from her. What girls don't expect is that you will take the initiative. This is where I can use my pro skills the most, not that I know any particular dance moves, but that I can take initiative. This requires some skill, but is not that hard to pick up. i thought i was crap at dancing but still did it just for fun pretty much every time i went drinking eventually I became legitimately awesome at it, like rest of the dancefloor stops dancing to form a semicircle around me clapping me on awesome. im sure to some some degree this happened because I have a semblance of natural rhythm and a complete willingness to embarass myself, but also largely just because I kept dancing.
first 10 times people told me I was great I thought they were joking tho.

Re-read what I said. I didn't say it was the main form of dancing. I said it in the context that those criteria are really the only exceptions to where it should be happening. It happens at clubs too where people are easy, but generally it is NOT the main form of dancing, anywhere.
