Yo,

So I'm planning to create a series of videos to help out some of the newer RTS and SC2 gamers. The first video(s) will likely cover some of the basics of RTS/SC games, ie. micromanagement, macromanagement, importance of economy, harass, gaming etiquette, etc.

Besides this I plan to continue the series with tips and advice specifically for StarCraft 2. I have software to record in-game footage, so the layout of the video will likely be voiceover of example gameplay w/ explanation of importance/effectiveness.

After covering certain basics, I may make different videos specific to each race. I'm currently compiling a list of topics to cover. If you guys have anything else you think would be good to add in, please let me know! I'd like these videos to be a good source for our newer gamers.

LIST SO FAR:

General RTS/SC2:
Micromanagement
Macromanagement
Economy
Harassment
Scouting
Reacting
Replay Analysis
Gaming Etiquette
Efficiency of Shift-Queuing Commands
Multitasking
Fighting Cheese
Building/Base Management
When Do I Expand?
Gaming Mentality
The Benefits of Random
Map-Specific Strategy/Understanding How Map Affects Gameplay

Terran:
MULE vs Scan
Repair: USE IT
Walling-in/SimCity
Tech lab vs Reactor

Protoss:
Chrono Boosting
Stalker tricks
Proxy pylons/Pylons in battlefield
SimCity

Zerg:
"Creep highway"/Creep tumors
Larvae Management
Fast Expand Vs. Early Units
Infester "mind control"
Queen Usage

Thanks for everyone's help! If you'd like to be mentioned for your help, I'd be happy to do so.

Make sure with each race you cover how they 'adapt' to certain popular strategy, ie: how each race best deals with a zerg going mass roach, go each race deals with a warp-gate rush, how each race deals with mass marauders.... etc. etc.

adapting to what the opponents doing is probably one of the fundamental things a LOT of people seem to be missing at the moment, they kinda just go about what they were doing despite what is actually happening on the other side of the map.

Ah, yes! Good point. I will definitely have to cover the aspects of continuous scouting and reacting (properly!). Thanks.

Btw, congrats on 1337 posts!

My first impression is that the examples you list include a fair number of isolated tactics. I would approach tutoring a complete RTS neophyte by introducing him to more high level concepts before delving into the details. For instance, in WoC I think Chill recommended focus on unit production and scouting. They are very broad concepts that can be honed with experience.

Of course making videos discussing specific tactics will probably be very helpful for ... new but not completely new players without a lot of time to get a huge experience base or have long replay-analysis sessions. It may also help those who know some broad concepts to focus on, but aren't sure what specifics they should look out for when watching their own replays.

Anyways kudos to you for this effort. I would recommend a video devoted to replay analysis.

Yes, I do plan on releasing the first batch with videos specifically geared toward the general concepts. I should throw that list in bold as well so that it is more visible! Unit production and scouting are definitely going on there for sure.

Replay analysis is definitely overlooked by many new players. Going on the list.

Oh wow, I was thinking of doing something extremely similar. I'd be happy to contribute if you'd like to send me a PM or message me on facebook.

I have a few ideas about how to approach the game's mentality, as many new players are the stereotypical "play with one hand on mouse and other hand stroking chin".

I was thinking about doing this, but not in videos haha. Just for all the people who go "I'm kinda new to RTS so I don't really know what I should be doing"

I just think videos would be the most appealing and convenient source of info. Plus I like making videos and I want to put my capture software to use! :D You are welcome to be part of the project if you'd like. ^^

There isn't any micro in SC II so you might skip that topic

For zerg, you should go over when to make drones and when to make units. For terran, talk about good walls and how to prevent baneling busts. Heck, a whole section dedicating to defending cheese would probably be a good idea. A guide to base building/organization might be something else you want to cover as well. A good simcity means less stuck units and better defense overall.

really not the best attitude to have while teaching...better to let them know how to do it, but to warn them not to overuse it, as it'll render you helpless against someone who scouts well or defends well

Haha that might be true. I don't really think I'd go so in-depth about how to successfully cheese a person, but I think explaining the process in which one might use cheese against them would be beneficial. And the note about it being useless against better players is a good thing to say.

Thanks for the input!
