FUCK i hate that.

i just inserted some back up internal hard drive (that i keep outside my computer when im not using) in my desktop.

usually my internal Data transfer speeds is pretty much around 70 megs/sec ...meaning it takes me not much more than half an hour to transfer 30gigs from internal drive A to internal drive B.

but sometimes..(usually when i use some drive i havent used in a long time) the speed of transfer is abysmally slow...like 2 megs/sec. you never know when the speed will adjust but sometimes it takes a while.

right now, it'll take me 3 hours to transfer 30 fuckin gigs. goddamn.

any nerd in here knows a way around this problem?

Does your mobo-support speed-step? If so enable it. Also if you have SATA drive make sure your mobo is in SATA-mode not PATA-mode. Of course it could be simply hard disk fragmentation, in which case running Windows Disk Management will help you fix any fragmentation - it takes a long time I recommend leaving it on over-night.

hum...i dont think thats the problem here because my Mobo always transfers at 70 meg/sec except when i insert some drive i havent used in a long time...so i dont think its the Pata//Sata switch.

and it cant be defragmentation because the drive im transferring to is empty.

Is windows set to index the disc? Try turning indexing off on the disc, maybe its trying to index it while you are transferring files hence making it slow. Also does turning off your antivirus real time scanning help anything?

Well if the drive is brand-new there's a possibility it could be simply a bad drive, if it is brand-new maybe you should get a replacement/exchange. Otherwise I'm not quite sure what the issue could be.

I don't know much about hardware, and hardware is probably the main culprit here, but have you tried using an alternate copy program?

TeraCopy does wonders for me.

When you have tons of small files it takes a longer to copy when compared to another set of files that add to the same size but are smaller in numbers.

yeah ..but again...im transferring something that i know should take 30 minutes because ive done it multiple times...also...small files can't explain the 70megs ==> 2megs drop in speed.

Indexing off is the first thing I do after a fresh install, if one organizes files properly the need to search is unnecessary.

I just found this program today... It's freeware supposed to "Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives."

http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php

I have no idea if it works or if it is any good but it might help!

I was about to recommend TeraCopy myself, you can pause the copy, auto file rename, can do matching to see if the files were copied correctly and present a list of files that it couldn't copy.

I just brought this up in my computer tech class. They are saying that it is probably the interface is bad or the hdd is bad. Their suggestion is to get a new hdd. Even though it works, it will be slow because of the interface. Gl with your computer.
