Holy Jesus. A box from Newegg, blood, sweat, some pliers, a knife, scissors, some broken parts later, and my new graphics card is installed. No, my tool set was not very professional, I worked with what I had lol.
My old graphics card(ATi Radeon x2600 series) died on me, so I was forced to get a new one, and now this is my rig:
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
3g RAM
ATi Radeon 5770 HD
Resolution: 1680x1050
I just played a test game after updating drivers to ensure everything works, and I can play SC2 on Ultra settings for everything! (Thanks for FragKrag for card recommendation). I'm so damn happy at the moment, and I just had to share =]. My old card was fried for over a week now, so I haven't had my game fix lately. Perfect timing for the weekend as well.
edit: I am getting my upload speed increased from 512kb/s to 1mb/s soon, so I will be able to stream in just as high quality as anyone else, so I'm super stoked for that as well, make sure to tune in! I'll be streaming SPL/OSL/MSL/etc still, but in much better quality, as well as my ultra settings of SC2! I'm current ranked #10 in my platinum division and I play Terran, so hopefully that will be something to look forward too as well.

I just had the exact same graphics card arrive today.  SC2 looks a lot better on Ultra compared to low.

yeh it's such an awesome feeling when you get a new computer part. a few years ago i bought myself an agp 7600gs and a gig of ram for my birthday and it felt so awesome i could play games i couldn't before (i had a fx5200 before)

Like the OP I had an ati 2600 series and right now I have no other choice but to play on low settings. I had bought a better geforce before this card a couple years ago but it made SOO much noise and I sold it on ebay when I bought the ati. And not only fan noise, it had this weird high frequency pitch, you know the type that they made a cell phone ringtone out of.
I want silence!! So wondering if this card makes enough noise to be bothersome!

omg that's one of my favourite things about it too. there's virtually NO sound. i can barely hear it at all. my 2600 wasn't bad for sound initially, but within time the fan on it started scraping against some internal part of the card, and it has been making horribly loud noises since. ^____________________^ so happy
Sheep, I leaving for my buddy's housewarming party shortly, and won't be back until tomorrow morning, but then I have pretty much the rest of the weekend to play if you're up for it!

You should definitely add a gig of RAM if possible, it'll speed thing up enormously for very cheap.

with those white clips holding them in place? It looks like I already have 4 sticks... I guess two are 512MB and the other two are 1GB to make my 3GB? If that's the case, I would be able to replace one of the 512MB with a 2GB to have 4.5GB, right?

I just bought my first PC. Ever.
I've been a mac user for almost 25 years - I switched to mac after being a Commodore64 owner and never looked back. I've owned about 12 macs in my lifetime and while I've used windows loads at work, I've never owned a wintel PC myself. After years of Apple's shit getting more expensive and generations behind the times, I finally reached a breaking point and built my own PC. The Radeon x1900 in my old 2005 G5 was dying a slow death from the infamous heat problems and I needed to be in shape for when SC2 came out so I did the only logical thing I could - I bought some kit and put it together.
For $2899 (CAD) Apple is currently offering
Quad Core Xeon 2.66GHz
3GB 1066MHz DDR3 RAM
GeForce 120 GT 512MB (uck!)
For $1100 CAD I bought a Gigabyte P55A-UD3 a black metal box, and stuffed in it
Quad Core i5 750 2.66GHz
4GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
650W Corsair PSU
And a sweet, sweet 1GB Radeon 5770, and it is indeed a wicked card. For the price, it's amazingly quick and overclocks like crazy (as does the i5!) Right now I'm running my i5 at 3GHz with zero problems under crazy stress. My 850MHz 5770 Is running at 900MHz and the ram is boosted to 1325MHz. Both could go higher, but I figured I'd leave them well in the safe zone. I've got three 2000rpm fans in my case too, so that probably helps. They're loud, but watercooling can wait until I have money again, lol.
It all runs like hot butter - I've never played games in such luxurious quality. I'm totally sold and highly recommend the 5770 - it's cheap and it burns like mad. SC2 on max everything, 1920x1200 glides beautifully. Hope you enjoy it, dude.

Those are the pups. If you're not replacing in pairs you may have to make sure to turn of dual-channel mode in your BIOS if your mobo supports and/or tries to force it - sometimes it can whack up your timings and cause crashes, etc. Switching out the pair of 512s for a pair of 1GBs is maybe another option - you lose out on half a gig, but if you get a matched pair then you get the bonus of being able to run them in dual channel mode. Otherwise you can just do it like you said and throw a 2GB in there - I'd test it out for a bit and maybe run memtest for a while to see if it causes you any troubles. If it doesn't then all's good, if it does then you might have to screw with your bios to get things happy again. Either way it should work.

Honestly I wouldn't bother to upgrade your ram, you won't see any performance increase in SC2 at all
