The game studio I'm working at is looking for a few new game testers if anyone is interested. The studio is Kaos Studios at it's located at 27th and 7th right across from FIT and down the street from NY Penn Station. The game we are working on is called Homefront (trailer). If you're interested the full job listing and place to apply online is here.

Details:
+ Show Spoiler +
Temporary QA Tester

We are currently seeking Quality Assurance Analysts for temporary full-time contract positions testing game software for current-gen consoles and PC platforms. Previous testing experience is preferred, but not required.

* Testing game software on next gen platforms such as the XBOX 360 and Playstation 3, and PC.
* Carefully and thoroughly documenting all software defects.
* Analyzing the balance and flow of the game, providing input when necessary.
* Writing clear and concise bug reports.
* Attending daily progress meetings and acting as a resource for various feature development teams.

Qualifications:

* Must be 18 years old or older and able to verify legal eligibility to work in the US
* Temporary, full time positions only (40 hrs/week)
* Due to the nature of this position, benefits and relocation assistance are not provided.
* Base hours are 9:30am - 6:30pm (Monday through Friday), however some overtime (nights and weekends) should be expected
* Ability to type 35 words a minute or more
* Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are required; clear penmanship with excellent spelling and grammar
* Strong attention to detail, willing to learn, adaptable to new processes
* Strong organizational skills
* Enthusiasm about being part of a growing team
* Computer literate and knowledgeable about MS Word and similar programs
* Self-starter

All interested applicants can apply directly to this job posting.

I find it to be a generally fun place to work so if you're looking for a place to get a start in the industry or just want a fun temp job this might be something worth looking into. A few notes:

- This is a temp position, I believe they are looking for someone to stick around for 1 year with chance of becoming hired full time after that.
- We make first person shooters so experience with them is a plus, both for you and Kaos. Would suck if you hate FPS games and have to play them 8 hours a day.

If you have any questions feel free to post here or PM me.

You don't necessarily need to be good at shooters to be hired. They are more interested in your ability to break games and to clearly articulate how to reproduce what you did. Trust me though, you will get pretty good at shooters pretty fast playing them as much as we do.

I would be interested in this position if I didn't have a year left in college.

I could be interested, but I don't know yet whether I'll be in NYC after the summer. So, some natural questions:

-When should we apply by and when should we expect to start?
-What would you want applicants to have, other than adult legal status and an interest in FPS? Is there anything that belongs on a resume for this job? Should I list other FPS I've played and how much I've played them?
-What level of compensation ($$$) are we looking at?
My strategy is to fork people.

I finish school this semester in about 2 weeks, and taking the train from Suffolk to penn is about an hour//hour and a half. ._.

I'd totally be interested in a summer there if thats even a remote possibility.

I'm actually kinda surprised everyone is all over this job lol

I've heard bad things about the game testing industry, i.e you barely really "play" the game, you just test it by trying to break things

He might also be looking for part time Q&A testers, but judging from the work times, school will get in the way and yet Im so close. BAH. Would be a great "addition" to a resume.

This isnt the first time. They were looking for the samething I believe for their first game(Frontlines: Fuel of War), that was last year.

- You should apply immediately as they are looking to fill 3-4 positions asap.
- Communication skills and the ability to break things. More specifically, the ability to break things AND figure out how to reproduce them as reliably as possible.
- Not sure exactly what they are giving temps right now but I would guess around $10-12/hr.

Good call, added to the OP. And no, we don't literally mean pen and paper. They mean being able to write in a clear way that won't require someone to come find you and ask for clarification. Also being as detailed as possible so a dev will be able to narrow down the cause of the bug as easily as possible and if necessary reproduce the bug by following your steps to the letter.

This really depends on the kind of games you are testing. We spend quite a bit of time playing the game here, far more than the last place I tested at. It's also a lot more fun testing here since much of what we do is multiplayer testing which is vastly more entertaining than testing single player games. I tell you that from experience. Lots and lots of experience... T_T

Of course there are times when you need to do some more tedious tasks like joining and exiting a multiplayer game over and over until bad things happen but I'd like to say that is more of an exception than the norm.

Well, having to repeatedly play a level or such to find major bugs and glitches... For long periods is tedious enough. Someone has to do it, especially if the multiplayer is extensive like Frontlines or the Battlefield(NOTORIOUS) series, its impossible to fix all the bugs.

It can get tedious but you find ways to add your own fun. Like getting vehicles or grenades to places they shouldn't be... Much hilarity has been had using dev cheat codes too. I wish I could post some pics from my screenshot collection of lulz.

At the end of the day it is still a job but I'd like to say it's a more entertaining one than most.

Good luck with that, I doubt they will even bother with the scheduling for full time students. Its just too much work, just grab a random guy that applies with decent experience and is available at required times.

I dont think they are looking for testers that just come in part time to fill in a vacant spot or something.

Mostly correct, they are looking for someone that can be in the office between 9:30 and 6:00 (with 30 mins of flex time you can place before or after) five days a week with potential for over time. If you can't work a full 40 hour work week then you probably won't be considered.

Not sure how the bold part slipped by but yeah you should list other games you've played if you've played them competitively or something. I mentioned all the tournaments I've been to and my placing for all games I've competed in, mostly non-FPS in my case. Starcraft, Soul Calibur, Counter Strike, etc. I told them I played SC at around 150-170 apm and they seemed impressed haha so that can't hurt. I also listed all the betas I've taken part in (WoW, WC3, etc) and I think that helped. If you ever found a bug in a beta I would mention that.

While you don't necessarily need to be good at games to get in, skill in games can act as a backup if you don't have testing experience. It certainly is a plus after communication skills, ability to break things, and prior testing experience.

Is this something you're looking to fill at this exact very moment? It's certainly gained my interest, however I am in college and have classes on some days. Thus, I cannot commit to a full time schedule at this moment. However, classes end in a few weeks and I will be able to after that.

We are looking to fill the position as soon as possible. If you interview and they like you they might be willing to wait until your classes end though. I don't think it would be unreasonable for them to wait 2 weeks or so from interview to starting. I would give it a shot if you can commit to a 40 hour work week afterwards.
