So I ran out of books to read today and it really sucks since it's the only thing that can make me fall asleep at night, so I need some advice on good books to read.
Right now I'm into self-biographys, I read trough The Dirt in 5 days and The Heroine Diaries in 3 (which is pretty quick for me). I know that before I've also enjoyed biographys of athletes.
So with this in mind, what would you recommend me? I think that all the books I've read so far this year has been inspiring so I'd like to keep on that track. In The Dirt you have one of the biggest rock bands of all time telling you how fucked up they were and how they got trough it, same goes for Nikki Sixx in the Heroine Diaries (it's funny how an addict can talk so clearly about how bad his/her addiction is and still crave the drug).
So thanks in advance for the reccomendations

Stranger In A Strange Land - Robert Heinlein Foundation - Isaac Asimov A Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin The Unknown Terrorist - Richard Flanagan The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini 1984 - George Orwell
Classics, each of them. Id be surprised if you hadn't read any of them, but I definitely encourage you to read the ones you haven't.
edit: the really inspiring or emotional books would be #1,4 and 5.

Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky

In case you haven't already read some of my favourites:
Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger Shogun by James Clavell Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Came here myself to suggest this myself. I recommend this as well!
edit: I liked Animal Farm by George Orwell as well, but it's a pretty short book.

The biography of Peter Forsberg ^_^
Holgerius if you see this, I am definitely recommending it to "The Peter Forsberg Terran" as well.

Ray Bradbury writes some pretty weird shit. It's almost all classic.

Nothing to be Frightened of by Julian Barnes is good. It's an atheist's memoir on death.
|
i need a good book to relax b4 sleep too
With that being said, I was going to suggest A Game of Thrones by George R.R Martin but dethrawr beat me to it lol. That (and the subsequent titles in that series) has kept me up reading way past my usual bedtime many a night, and im just rereading it again now.

I haven't finished it, but I'm just starting to read the book for Hitman(ebook). I heard it was pretty good, and I loved the games and think I'm going to like it. So if you're into that kind of stuff maybe give it a look.

Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card
A very good sci-fi book. The entire series is very good!
|
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas.

Some of my favorite books.
Lord of the Flies by William Golding To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee Animal Farm by George Orwell Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

If you enjoyed The Dirt you should obviously check out Slash's autobiography. ^__^ Jan Guillou's autobiography is sweet if you like him. Anything with Shakespeare is worth reading as well.

Be careful here lol~
I was recommended this book by TL.net too. People were going crazy over it and I ended up buying the whole series before even reading the first book. (Ender's Game)
Well, I ended up reading it and honestly, I finished it. I was intellectually aroused I guess you could say and the story played out like a movie in my head. Like it was well written, strong story, etc.
But it just wasn't for me. It was so ... sci-fi.
I don't like to judge a book by its genre because I like all types of stuff. But Ender's Game was just... not pleasurable for me even though it did exercise the intellect.

Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien The Blind Side - Michael Lewis (this is a biography)
|
Harry Potter books 1-7. Reread them. Best books ever.
|
One of my favourite books is Frank Herbert's Dune.
A compelling story about racism, political intrigue and self-realization. Contains great (madeup) scientifics to help describe the world.
Contains many comments on our own "modern" society.
|
+ Show Spoiler +Yo guys, I'm very happy for your recommendations and imma let you finish... ...but The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald is one of the best books of all time! OF ALL TIME!
|
I would probably suggest the following:
Catcher in the Rye To Kill a Mockingbird Lord of the Flies Of Mice and Men
Those are great books that I read especially To Kill a Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men. Depression Era books (or books that were written about/in the depression) are some of my favourite books to read.

looks suspiciously like my reading list for year 12 english/literature...
Did not enjoy any of these, probably because I had to pick them apart and analyse them.
Although catcher in the rye was just so annoying the first time around. And it got worse with subsequent reads.

Kaffir Boy is a great book
|
Not Wanted On the Voyage - Timothy Findley
Deptford Trilogy - Robertson Davies
|
|
The breif and wondrous life of oscar Wao - Juniot Dias
This book is magical, and full of great nerdy references, which i know you'll love. i'd try to describe it, but i really can't find the words, might just be the beer talkin' though, whatever read this book you will not regret it.

I easily get paralyzed by book threads because I read too much, I always think that theres too many books to prescribe just a few, and OMG I haven't read some of the books mentioned above!
If you want "A Long Way Gone" is a great book about "getting through" stuff, it is written by an ex-child soldier.

Changed my life!
After you finish this, read Atlas Shrugged.

I'm reading A Game of Thrones right now. I'm about 2/3 of the way through and it's awesome. It's been recommended many times in past book recommendation threads, so be sure to check it out if you're into fantasy.

20000 leagues under the sea. seriously, read it.

Agree with so many books already mentioned. Just want to add this:

The book that got me into sci-fi originally. Such greatness.

Two self-biographies I just read:
Diary of a Teenage Girl
Found this in a used bookstore and read the thing pretty much from beginning to end. It can be at times a little uncomfortable if you're a guy, but discomfort always keeps things engaging and interesting.
The Volunteer
About a Canadian-born man's career in the Mossad. Quick, easy to read, highly regarded (it was mentioned in some newer espionage books as essential reading, but I can't remember at the moment which recommended it) and very interesting if you're into that kind of stuff.
|
That's weird, those were the last 2 books that I finished and would recommend. I would recommend Outliers more though.

I'd suggest Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen. It's pretty entertaining, but it has it's weird moments. I think Nony also read these, since his sc2 beta nick "Kruppe" comes from this series.
Edit: It's a series, the first book is called Gardens of the Moon.
|
If you´re looking for autobiographies, I´d read "I, Asimov." It's long, but if by chance you're a fan of Asimov's writing style and maybe want to know more about him, I'd give it a look.
|
Man this got waaaaaaay more replies then I thought it would, thanks alot guys. now I've got enough books to keep me busy for months!
Oh and just for the record: I have read some of the classics, in my OP I just said what I've read recently. Ofc I've read 1984 ^^
|
A lot of great titles have been posted... that have absolutely nothing to do with what the OP was talking about in his post, leading me to believe that most people only read the title of the thread.
|
I'd recommend "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Bourdain If you aren't familiar, he's a chef who was formerly on the Food Network, now he has a show called "No Reservations" where he goes around the world visiting various places and eating their food... probably the best job ever. This book is about his beginnings with food and cooking, and his life as a chef. Lots of interesting stuff about the restaurant industry. Even if you aren't into cooking it's a good read imo.
|
I fucking love No Reservations! I didnt know he had a book out, I'll definatly check it out! Thanks for that
