Someone on the PLU.cn boards wrote some really nice Starcraft short stories, and I thought I'd share them. Here's the ninth, translated from Chinese at http://bbs.plu.cn/thread-1063312-1-1.html , original author "waiting22."
Wait for me, DT-hyung!
“I think it’s gonna rain today. Doesn’t that cloud look like a Reaver?”
“What are you talking about, there’s no rain in Starcraft…”
“Do you think there’s gonna be enemy harassment today?”
“Let it come. I’m so bored here, we’ve been mining non-stop for three minutes…is there a war on or what?”
A group of Probes chatted as they mined. This is their life. Only one Probe is mining silently, occasionally glancing into the distance.
“Hey, what’s up with you? You used to be the chattiest one here. Ever since we moved to this expansion, you’ve gone quiet. What’s wrong, shell-shocked? Can’t talk anymore?” a Probe said to the silent one.
“Pfft, whatever. Who’s shell-shocked? I just think there’s nothing to say.” Honestly, even she doesn’t know what happened to herself. She used to enjoy talking about nothing like none other, but now, she hasn’t participated in a long time. She would just mine as she glanced into the distance. Her thoughts went back to three minutes ago…
“We require an expansion to fund the continued war efforts. Are there any among you willing to take up the task?” the Commander asked.
“ME!!!” A newly born Probe used all of her strength to yell out. She thought that everyone would be fighting for this opportunity, so she needed to be loud to be heard over everyone else.
But she didn’t expect her “ME!!!” was the only response.
“I had never seen such a brave Probe. Very well, you can go.” The commander was flabbergasted that someone actually volunteered. “Don’t worry, I won’t let you go alone. I will send the strongest warrior we have as a bodyguard. The fate of the Protoss race is on your shoulders.”
Confused, the Probe left the base, and moved into the darkness. She felt as if the entire army is mourning for her, kind of an “Out, out brief candle!” moment…
“Those bastards,” she ranted to herself, “louder than anyone when talking about their virtues, but when the actual time comes, this! Pfft. What am I scared off? I’ll do it. Let’s see who’s gonna stop me!” The probe kept ranting as she walked, depressed and despondant. She almost forgot the dangers of the mission…
“Hm? Didn’t the commander say he was gonna send out an escort? Why am I here alone?” A chill ran down her back.
“Who’s there?” the nervous Probe said as she heard some sounds, as if something’s rapidly approaching.
A Zergling suddenly appeared form the darkness, and lunged straight for the Probe.
“Ow! Help! HELP!” The Probe didn’t have a chance to react as the Zergling began rending into her. Tears of pain streamed from her eyes.
Swish! – a sound of a blade moving through the air. The Zergling dropped dead next to her.
“Move!” a low voice came from the shadows.
The Probe, still confused and crying, “W-who’s there? An envoy from hell? Am I gonna die?”
“I’m a Dark Templar.” The voice, low and raspy, really did sound like it came from the very depths of hell.
Even the most ignorant units have heard of the infamous Dark Templar. The most mysterious warrior in all of Starcraft – his legend is everywhere. Usually, the name “Dark Templar” is associated with fear and trembling, but for this Probe, the name is truly music to her ears.
“D-Dark Templar hyung!” The Probe never dreamed that her escort would be the legendary Dark Templar! “The commander must really value me!” Thoughts and fantasies of the special attention given to her made her forget even her pain.
With the accompaniment of the Dark Templar, the dangerous mission and treacherous road became Alice in Wonderland. The invisible Templar gave her a sense of security never felt before. Like a Marine’s Gauss rifle, she fired off words continuously. The Dark Templar never responded, but she never stopped.
“DT-hyung, I heard that you climbed a Spire by yourself and killed seven Mutalisks!”
“DT-hyung, I heard that you cover your face is because you hide the scars of battle…or is it acne?”
“DT-hyung…”
“Hey, boss, there’s a Probe here. Kill?” As the Probe was talking into what seemed like thin air, two Hydralisks appeared in front of her.
“Kill? Who, me? Just you two? All right, come! I’m waiting right here!” Hearing the Hydralisk’s words, the Probe mockingly replied.
“Shit, haha, I’ve seen Probes, but never one this arrogant!” The two Hydralisks prepared to attack.
Swish, swoosh.
A falling leaf landed on the remains of a Hydralisk.
“Woot! Dark Templar-hyung, invincible warrior! Let’s go see if there are any more enemy forces near here, we’ll kill them all!” The Probe, in her joy, already forgot about her original mission.
“Minerals.” After 1’20” of silence, the Dark Templar spoke again.
Patches of blue crystals appeared in front of them. “Ah, here? No, no, can’t do it here! A Nexus has to be built in a valley from the north, facing south. Here? The feng shui is obviously off.” The Probe’s adventures have just begun, she can’t imagine if it ended right now, forcing her to return to her boring old life.
As the Probe continued to come up with reasons why this is a bad expansion, an Overlord floated towards them.
Shadows flashed, and suddenly, a black-caped warrior appeared in front of the Probe. A sharp blade reflected his shadowy figure.
“Dark…Dark Templar? Dark Templar-hyung? You, why can I see you?” Even though she had never seen a Dark Templar before, this aloof figure radiating a cool demeanor is exactly as she had fantasized.
Before she realized what was going on, two Zerglings and a Hydralisk descended from the Overlord, and lunged at the Dark Templar.
“Oh no, they have detection! DT-hyung, I’ll hold them off, run!” She realized that this is the legendary Detection she heard so much about. She felt that outnumbered, the Dark Templar is in danger. But even as she told the DT to run away, she herself couldn’t move – her legs decided to stop listening to her for some reason, and she felt her knees go all soft.
“Block one Zergling!” The Templar ordered as he swung his blade towards the Hydralisk.
“Block…a Zergling? M-Me?” The Probe, gripped by fear, closed her eyes and just charged towards the direction of a Zergling.
“Ow, ow! I’m about to die! DT-hyung, save me!” Seeing no evil doesn’t mean feeling no evil. The Probe is feeling the pain from the Zergling’s assault.
“Cut him!” The Dark Templar already dispatched the Hydralisk, and turned to face the other Zergling.
“Cut him? Like, with a mineral? All right…” The Probe unleashed a weak wave of plasma. She never thought that this would be used for combat!
As she is about to collapse, the familiar “swish” sounded again. She fell together with the Zergling – one of them died, one of them fainted.
“Build the Nexus,” she heard in her half conscious state.
Under the moonlight, she seemed to see a light smile from underneath the mask of the Dark Templar in his cold face…perhaps there was no moonlight…perhaps he didn’t smile…the Probe’s memories have lost the touch of reality after countless recollections surrounded in nostalgia.
“Wait for me, DT-hyung!” The time she spent with the Dark Templar, with the passage of time, are relentlessly moving further and further away.
Her old self would’ve talked nonstop about her heroic adventures and the Dark Templar. But every time she’s about to bring it up, she stopped herself. In the end, she chose silence.
“It’s enough if I know.”
