I visited my dad yesterday and apparently he uses "thepiratebay" now. This is a man in his 50's who doesn't know how to open his email attachments, or what a .zip file is.
Is using torrents now officially mainstream? Are HS chicks that used to use the computer only for myspace or aim now downloading movies with torrents? Are old couples who don't know what a DVD is, doing this too?
I think this is too funny, or maybe he's just an anomaly.

its not hard. You click the torrent. it opens in the client. You download...it goes...you go woo.

My grandfather, 80 years old uses Unix AND downloads movies with torrents. Its hilarious , he always asks some noob question about his email, and yet he can use these 2 programs easily hah
|
yeah it's pretty weird, i had a similar experience. i actually learned of torrents years ago from someone aged around 55-60. he was my high school teacher LOL

My friends dad was still using Limewire until recently when I showed him torrents...

People don't use a computer because they like computers and its hardware and softer bits and bytes, they use it to get something done.
If he can get the latest of movies and music to his own choosing from about an unlimited selection, that lowers the barrier for learning considerably. It took a while though before the older generation got to hear about it.. Must be because they aren't that into using instant messaging, rather clinging to the tradition of chatting in a bar a couple of times a month so the underground news travels a lot slower.
I find it funny how often computer usage is viewed as a goal in itself.

I'm glad, it means more seeds

He downloads Bob Dylan bootlegs and Top Gear

For some reason, this is rather disturbing. When it comes to computers for old people, TPB trumps email! Who would've thought.

its kinda hard not to know about torrents. whenever you search for a movie or a TV Show on google, 15 out of the first 20 pages have something to do with the the word "torrent"
that kinda raises a nigga's curiosity.
my 24 y-o sister uses a comp everyday for working and music but she has no clue what a megabyte is and prolly doesnt know about torrents.

Well, I teached my grandfather to use linux, torrents and burning dvds... he now has above 100 "backuped" movies lol
|
My dad doesn't have a computer and hasn't for like 3 years rofl. My mom just goes on news sites on her laptop, often while actually watching the news on tv, funnily enough.

My 50-something mother torrents movies daily, haha.

Surprisingly, I know young people who don't know how to torrent. They've never considered learning it because they actually believe that there is a significant chance of getting caught.

It's interesting how torrents are still the most used tools to download stuff in US.
Old people and computers - my best friend accidentaly walked into his grandpa's room when he was watching PORN :D (yes, not the other way around)

Oh that must be awful. In one's old age not only is hearing worse, but so are reflexes. So whereas a young guy would have heard before they entered or minimized everything in a flash an old man would be helpless. T.T

I that that only the most prominent uploaders get caught.
