I just dont understand why so many people think iccup is the "end-all" ladder for sc.. and Its the most ludicrous thing in the world when people say "So when will SC2 get iccup".. when the only reason iccup is alive in the first place is because Blizzard isnt moderating the hackers on their SC1 ladder, cause its a 10 year old game.

Anyways there's no doubt iCCup is against terms of use. But Blizzard choses to just ignore it, let's look at pro's / con's: pros: -Keeps starcraft alive, moderated and competitive -Blizzard manpower can be spent elsewhere, no need to police bnet anymore -The hardcore fanbase thinks Blizzard is fucking awesome for leaving iCCup alone -Newcomers are easier to recruit (try asking your friends to play a game they haven't heard of, then tell them it's free...), which in return generates even more hype for SC2. cons: -You ignore your own terms of use, setting a bad example. But lets be honest, the only private ladder you could run and take away customers from Blizzard would be a WoW ladder, which they have already proven they can and will shut down... Several times.

Iccup has taken a the product of battle.net, basically copied the frame and made a few minor adjustments. In doing so they are using material that they do not own the rights too and they are driving traffic away from battle.net. This has most definitely cost Blizzard money in advertising and I bet this kind of argument would hold up in a court. However, the money Blizzard has lost to Iccup is far outweighed by the popularity Iccup has brought to Blizzards products. This is a critical time for Blizzard, and the more press SC1 gets, the more hype SC2 gets. You vastly overestimate the ad income. Have you ever checked what kind of banners they show in bnet? How many people do you think click on these and eventually buy stuff? Very little, if any at all. Ad revenue is a joke. Blizzard is definitely not losing money to iccup because the traffic and server costs of bnet are higher than any revenue they might have. In fact I would rather say that they saved money by having to deal with less traffic costs due to people playing on iccup. On February 25 2010 12:03 Pokebunny wrote: Exactly. The unique part is that Blizzard realizes it is helping their game and doesn't want to go nazi corporation mode and rape iccup. iccup is extremely beneficial for the old bnet and starcraft. Otherwise Blizzard could have supported their own ladder and implemented lan latency and taken legal measures against iccup. As there currently is no way to monetize the old bnet, they focus their attention on sc2 and the new bnet. This doesn't have to do anything with nazi corporation mode or raping at all.
