I am getting my wisdom teeth taken out tomorrow; I'm getting knocked out. Can anyone tell me what to do/expect during recuperation? I'll be on a lot of pain drugs, apparently.

I'm also getting mine taken out tomorrow...apparently we get to look forward to eating only soft food for a few days, as well as constantly irrigating the holes in our gums where the wisdom teeth once were -_-

Its not too bad, I got general anesthetic because they had to mill parts of the jawbone. It did hurt but it wasn't too bad. (when I was joking with a female friend of mine and I was a bit cheeky she slapped me T...T .... that was really painful, she just forgot about that in that second)

I hear everyone reacts differently. Plus it depends on just how much work has to be done to get the teeth out and if they are coming in weird and intruding onto other teeth etc. Some people cannot eat anything solid and are in a lot of pain while others kind of breeze through it. My friend had them out and he was fine and infact kinda enjoyed the loopiness of the pain meds they gave him.

Mmm I had all 4 taken out with just local anesthesia, and in my experience, it'll hurt and bleed like hell the first day... but afterwards you'll be okay. Just be paranoid with what you eat the first 4-5 days (nothing that can get caught in the new holes in the back of your mouth), man up on the pain, and remember to take your antibiotics and your recovery will be pretty smooth.

make sure your hand is warm before they put the IV in so they can easily find the vein.
when they started putting the drugs in, it felt cold and numb for me, they gave me an oxygen mask and in 30 seconds i was asleep.
i can't remember going to another room, but apparently i was walked there.
you're probably going to sleep a lot as the anesthesia wears off.
make sure you have someone make a schedule of your pills for you and force you to take them, because on the first day, I mixed up my penicillin with my tylenol 3 and that was awkward.
don't expect to get any work done while you're off.

oh, and ever since my surgery, the left side of my tongue is numb and feels like i swallowed a lozenge, and food tastes terrible on that side now. like drinking orange juice after brushing your teeth, it's awful. i had my surgery about 2 weeks ago, and i thought the numbness would go away with the swelling buttttt, it hasn't. so, yeah.

I didn't even have to take my pain medication. Just take it easy and bite down on the gauze and don't stop even though it's annoying. You'll be bleeding a lot, so don't be surprised by that.

Just relax as much as possible and you should be fine. If it hurts a lot, take the painkiller and lie down. When you lie down, try to prop your back up just a bit so you're at an angle otherwise you'll probably swallow some blood and whatnot.

Man I couldn't eat anything the 1st day, not because my mouth hurt, but because the medicine they gave me made me so nauseous that I would just throw up right after eating something.

I made a blog after I had my wisdom teeth done. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Getting the operation itself wasn't bad, I was chilling in the chair and they put laughing gas on me and I was trying to talk to them cause I was nervous. Then they were hooking an IV up to me and I wa slike "...I don't... like that you... poking me with that neeeedle" and they said "just breathe deep you wont mind" and then i was like 'yaaaaa I dont mind, this laughing gas is goood" then they were like "you on a lot more than laughing gas now." So I just looked up and I was thinking "fuck I'm high right now" then I was out.

Woke up all fucked up feeling and I had gauss wrapped around my face / could see bloody mess around me. Walking was hard after I got up but the oxy's they gave me were enjoyable. I was just really really hungry afterwards. I think I had hamburger helper the 2nd day, possibly first night. I mostly just ate slimfast / omelettes. Wasn't bad,

Yeah, same as whats been repeated pretty much.
I had it pretty bad, all four of my teeth were impacted and growing in all fucked up, sideways and shit.I opted for sedation, took valium the night and morning before the surgery, didn't eat anything that morning either.
Got the I.V in and knocked me out within 20 seconds or so....
The next few days were a blur, basically take your meds, rinse your mouth out with warm salt water to sterilize to empty holes in your gums, eat soft foods, etc.
Gonna be shitty for a few days, just try to get plenty of rest, that's the best way to cope with it.

Think it was worse for me then most people, not because my teeth were impacted so much but because the Vicodin they gave me was just too strong for me back then I guess because it made me feel fucking terrible....:/

oh, and ever since my surgery, the left side of my tongue is numb and feels like i swallowed a lozenge, and food tastes terrible on that side now. like drinking orange juice after brushing your teeth, it's awful. i had my surgery about 2 weeks ago, and i thought the numbness would go away with the swelling buttttt, it hasn't. so, yeah.

Eh I would really get that checked out if its still like that 2 weeks down the road, could have been nerve damage during the procedure ~_~

just a question, do wisdom teeth only get removed if they are impacted? if they are not impacted, can they be left alone?

I'm still recovering as i did it about a week ago.

1. It hurts. ALOT. Meds=best friend... ever (many people say it wasnt that bad, but I never experienced so much soreness :[ ). You may have different experiences.
2. Get something to pick out the food particles with. Like a water pick (dental hygiene aisle. Shoots water out and cleans the empty hole of food particles).
3. Swish around salt water to clean out the wounds.
4. Don't eat anything to get that can get lodged or stuck in there (obvious one).

I may be missing some, but I think that covers it.

Oh, forgot to add that after the first week, you should be good. I'm feeling a lot better now and am glad to have gotten it out the way.

They will tell you to not suck through a straw or do anything that might dislodge the clots in your mouth.

TAKE THIS VERY SERIOUSLY!

Do everything you can to avoid any lack of pressure in your mouth and your recovery will be 10 times faster and easier. I followed this advice very seriously and was fine in 3 days. My friend didn't and was in agony for 3 weeks.

They didn't knock me out for mine (they took all 4)

It took about an hour or so if I remember correctly. didn't hurt at all, my mouth was sore a bit afterwards. It only bled for the first day, no dry socket, and I was back to my old self within 2 days. Didn't even use the vicodin they gave me.

Mine got pulled last October. it wasn't bad at all, had problems with eating within the next few days. All i can eat was yogurts and ice cream. Try eating ice cream (without nuts ofcourse) after your tooth pulled out it would lessen/stop the bleeding like mine did and drink the drug they will give you.if your a smoker, avoid it also as it can cause infections. Good luck!

T-3 + soup

My experience was actually really pleasant; I felt no pain, and I only took T-3 for 2 days (those two days went by really fast). A week of hunger, and then it was done.

Yeah. I'm also lucky to have plenty of room. They just grew normally and I use them to chew food.

I never had any pain with mine, and you really shouldn't, if it's done by a competent doctor. That and, having a high threshold for pain can't hurt, but no, I never needed 1 pain killer.

I did however almost bleed to death after I got home, but that's neither here nor there.

Edited: Also, make sure to rise your mouth with salt water and stuff, and really, don't eat stuff that could get lodged in there and create problems. Just stick with liquids until they tell you to.

I had mine out last Monday. They knocked me out before I knew what was going on and the entire thing was done in 45 minutes. For the first two days there was hardly any pain at all but all I ate was porridge, yogurt, and ice cream. Then for next couple of days my mouth became quite sore and puffy as hell It's been a week and I'm pretty much back to normal. It still hurts to whistle though :/

Oh shit I've removed 3 wisdoom teeth so I'm somewhat of an expert of the ensuing pain

Nah it's usually not that bad tbh. Just ask for really strong pain meds which is essential IF you get alot of pain. Anyways, drink soup and water and don't eat foods that could get stuck in your mouth. Don't smoke/drink alcohol.

Expect a week of some lighter pain and annoyance. You'll be fine
