You can browse TL.net and watch Starcraft VODs anywhere. That should be enough to sell you!

I haventnoticed any slowdown or battery problems like I have with Ipods. The UI is really intuitive. I really have no complaints. You can browse TL.net and watch Starcraft VODs anywhere. That should be enough to sell you! so can any other smartphone as long as you have a data plan or wifi

Alternately, our account is eligible for a discounted upgrade if I wait until the end of May, 2010... so maybe I should just wait and then upgrade then.

Of course there are cons though, lack of Flash support means I can't watch live streams of SC, but I hope that'll be remedied eventually. Also, in Canada at least, we get robbed horribly in terms of plans by Rogers. I managed to get my iPhone for 100 bucks though thanks to some strange loophole that the salesman exploited :/.

When I picked it up, I had wanted to get the Samsung Behold, which I've heard is an amazing phone, but it would have been a two month wait.

I'd go so far as to say mobile phones in general are overrated (I'm fine without one), but I think I'd get lynched.

If you've lived this long with a phone that doesn't take pictures, play music, browse TL, surf porn, and cook your breakfast, why would you need one now? As OneOther said... he felt the same way until he actually got one and then he realized he was wrong.

We can happily talk more if you pick a price range and specify desired features :-)

He has no basis because he has never used a smartphone, let alone a mobile phone (wtf?). He has never experienced smartphones' amazing convenience so there is no way for him to judge whether they're overrated or not. People who have never used one usually say they are overrated. They're wrong. It's not a must have necessity in life but it makes things whole a lot easier. I am a college student and my phone certainly helps me stay on top of things.

I had a cell for a year, then got rid of it and was quite happy to have one less thing in my pockets. They're wrong. It's not a must have necessity in life but it makes things whole a lot easier. I am a college student and my phone certainly helps me stay on top of things. I'm a university student too. I can definitely understand that a mobile is useful for being flexible about things (my approach is to plan things in advance and jump on IRC in case of the unexpected), but you'll have a much harder time convincing me that you need your all-in-one everythingphone. What is the basis of this? The basis is that you've gotten this far without a smartphone. You even said in your OP that you barely use your existing phone. If you aren't even using your current phone very much, what makes you think you'd get more use out of something that does even more? If there were a specific feature you needed, I could understand that too, but your OP didn't make that sound very likely either.

When I asked what was the basis, I meant of "I'm pretty sure smartphones are overrrated." You have not answered this particular question. I understand your point about how at a glance I don't seem like someone who will benefit... but that is basically because you don't know me very well. I tend to be an extremist with this type of thing and either use a device as little as possible or live off of it. I've made a conscious choice not to set up a voicemail box and I'm starting to decide that I need to change certain things such as that. And as long as I'm doing this I'm going to take it to the extreme (most likely) and get something that everyone around me tells me I will love. Of course I'm still in the research stage and open to suggestions. My colleague's run-through of her iphone 3gs today really got me interested in it and I'm definitely considering it... although I still have to decide if I want to stay with my family's plan or not.

Stick with the family plan, it's always cheaper when you split your bill.

Then I have to wait until May 29th for a discounted upgrade, or pay an extra ~200 dollars, and I also will be forced to deal with my phone expenses through my parents which is not the direction I really want to be going. But you are most likely right... arg annoying. I should figure out exactly how much is being saved by sticking with the family...
