Ich lerne Deutsche auch

You seem like you're a lot more dedicated than me. Are you taking this first year at university as well? I wouldn't mind practising Deutsche with you, but you'd probably get more out of a more experienced speaker (to say the least)

Would any native speakers critique the small bit of German I wrote? It seems awkward to say.

1. Ich lerne Deutsch auch

2. Auch ich lerne Deutsch

3. Ich lerne auch Deutsch

all three are possible, the last one is the most common and natural sounding one though

1. Is kind of correct but not something I'd write. I'm pretty sure your teacher would correct this even though I'm not 100% sure if this is a grammatical error. You can use that in a conversation though. People who have German as their second language would use this form often.

2. Is correct, stressing that "You" also learn German and not somebody else. When using that in a conversation you will have to stress the "ich" though, if you don't, the sentence sounds weird.

3. Is the form you would normally use and also what I think you had in mind. I recommend this one.

German is a ridiculously difficult language to learn. Three sexes, four cases, etc. I'm glad I don't need to learn it as a second language

We can improve our self-motivation by introducing the competitive element into it. We should have competitions to see who learns the most of a certain language within a certain period of time.

I too want to learn German. I know a little, and took 4 years in highschool (but I don't feel like I learned too much there). All my moms family still lives in Germany and I would love to be able to speak/read/write fluently, what is the best way to learn a language if you aren't taking it in school (are programs any good?).

The best way to learn is to live in the target country for an extended period of time.

Failing that, it becomes extremely difficult. You will have to have monastic discipline, and allot a fair portion of your weekly schedule to practice, drilling and review. One popular programme you can get for free online is the Foreign Service Institute programme used by the government to train staff.

You can find them here: http://fsi-language-courses.org/Content.php

Be warned however, the content of these courses are extremely dry and require systematic work. If you use them, I'd suggest you burn the audio files onto a CD and print out the text. In my judgement, systematic study in a virtual enviornment is too distracting, and I've never been able to accomplish much with a computer. I suggest isolating yourself somewhere with a book and CD player, and working it out.

The assimil series http://www.assimil.com/consulterCatalogue.do?catalogue is produced by a French company, and has an interesting methodology of passive learning. They basically skip over the grammar in favour of intuitive learning with bilingual texts. In my opinion it works pretty well.

Finally, when it comes to language books, generally the rule is, the older the better. Most modern commercial language programmes suffer from one or more of the following failings:

-Too many pictures and colours, which distract you
-Too much English. If more than half the book is written in English, it's probably superficial.
-Too many pointless exercises, such as fill in the blank, or game-playing.
-Too much "cultural studies;" while learning about your target country isn't a problem, it's not your main objective, and shouldn't distract you away from that.
-Too little vocabulary. At the back of the book there is usually an index of words learned throughout the book. If the list is fewer than a thousand words, the book is probably superficial.
-Too gimmicky. Things like Rosetta Stone purport to have innovative methods of teaching memorization. In my opinion all such miracle solutions are suspicious, and one should stick to old-fashioned diligence.

Generally, books published in the 19th/early 20th centuries are excellent, although the linguistic particulars may be somewhat outdated. Many books published in the West up until 1980 are generally good. A lot of excellent language books have been published in the former Warsaw Pact countries, and are generally superior to their Western counterparts. Unfortunately, most such books will not be found in your local bookstore, so you might have to visit antique bookstores/a well-stocked library/ebay/amazon used books to find them.

It's debatable where the social aspect of learning a language comes in (conversation.) In my opinion, one should work with a book until the intermediate level of comprehension. Working on conversation, immersion, or with a tutor will yield the best results from that level on. If I had to divide effective learning into three stages I would say:

Stage 1: Theory & Accumulation: Work primarily with a book with audio aids. Learn the grammar. Drill vocabulary. Do interpretation exercises.
Stage 2: Active practice: By this time you should be able to read a newspaper and understand its general argument. You should be able to watch a film and understand the plot more or less. Now work with a tutor, do a language tandem with a native speaker of your target language, preferably face-to-face, or otherwise via Skype or Internet. I recommend Face-to-face, since it's very difficult to find a serious partner online. Read a newspaper or an easy book, with dictionary in hand, jotting down the words you don't know.
Stage 3: Passive learning: By this stage you should be able to read newspapers or books, watch films or listen to the radio without frequent recourse to dictionaries and other aids. You should continue to practice through these means.

So in short, you begin with reading/writing, advance to speaking/listening, and go back to reading in the final phase.
