yum yum yum
I love beer. I am not an alcoholic by any means but when I get home from work and had a beer, it is awesome. I love the taste and the hint of carbonation. Some of my favorite beers are Harp, Smithwicks, and Fat Squirrel. While these three beers are great, I enjoy almost any beer that cost more than 50c and comes in a bottle.
I'm sure many of you feel the same way about the best alcoholic beverage on the planet and have even tried making some on your own. You are the people I am reaching out to. I would love to try home brewing, but before I throw 100$ down the toilet in a terrible attempt, I was wondering if any of you had suggestions for kits or beers that you have used/made that were easy. I am not saying that I am afraid of failure, just that I want instant gratification.
Other questions include...
Have you enjoyed home brewing? Are lagers more difficult than ales? Have any of you tried culturing the yeast prior to putting it in the beer? Are there any tips you wish you had received before delving into the world of brewing?
EDIT:
As a side not, most of the Asian Americans I know only drink Heineken. Agree/Disagree

Can't advise you on brewing, but this sorta seems like the best place (or worst perhaps) to say that I don't like beer at all. I've tried it many different times, and every time I've found the taste terrible.
I told this to everyone in college, and many of them would be like "oh even if you don't like beer this one in particular is AMAZING and you will like it" and I'd try it and invariably find it gross. People say beer is an acquired taste but I doubt most people found it to taste as bad as I have considering how much agony they would have to overcome to become beer drinkers...

I don't however understand why you want to make fun of someone for not liking the taste of something when it's not his (or even her) fault. Making fun of someone for being short, or requiring glasses due to myopia (short sightedness), or because of their skin color, are all pretty annoying/despicable things and what you are doing is no different.
Of course we do it IN JEST all the time and I only even care because I don't really know who you are and can't read the tone through the internet.

There is nothing wrong with not liking the taste of most beers and I know exactly what you mean about people raving about one beer and thinking it is crap. Here in wisconsin, almost everyone drinks beer from the New Glarus brewery. Their staple beer is Spotted Cow and everyone thinks it is the shit, but personally, I think it is ok at best.
I know you are probably fed up with beer suggestions, but maybe you would like a drink that is considered beer, but is more similar to wine, or juice. The Raspberry Tart Beer from New Glarus is a great example. It has a hint of beer taste, but more than anything it tastes really really tart. If you like tart food, you would find this delicious.

I know some people do did home brewing and theirs came out awesome. Its a tough thing to do right though and starting it up is kinda expensive. Im just going on from what ive heard though. My fav beer would have to be Blue Moon or Sam Adams Oktoberfest.

I know both of those beers are popular, but I don't really like the Belgian (spiced) beers such as Blue Moon and in a similar vein, all of the oktoberfest beers. They all remind me too much of cinnamon and pumpkin spice.

beer, much like coffee or metal is a very much so acquired taste.
don't just casually drink it to learn to love it, indulge yourself into a drinking game where you HAVE to drink it and once you drink 3-4 of them you will be drunk and not care what it tastes like anyway.
after doing that 1-3 times you will like beer.

My sister hates beer, but she loves this stuff. It's unequivocally delicious, and one of the best beers I have ever tasted.
If you ever end up trying it, you must pour it into a glass. This balances the flavors out, otherwise the coriander/orange is too concentrated.
Here's a description from wikipedia,
"Hoegaarden is a Belgian-style wheat beer meaning it is spiced with coriander and orange peel. It is unfiltered and therefore pale and cloudy in appearance. Hoegaarden is known for its superior refreshment and its distinctive smooth, sweet and sour taste. It typically lacks the bitterness and aftertaste of many lager style beers."

after doing that 1-3 times you will like beer. That may be how it is for you, but for me, the part that is an acquired taste is the alcohol, not the beer flavor. I did not always enjoy a jack and coke or a guiness but since I have overcome the alcohol flavor, I enjoy both.

I'll give it a go, and from the sounds of it, if she likes this beer, she would probably love Éphémère made by the Unibroue brewery (Canada). It is an apple spice Belgian that my gf loves.

Haha Jack and coke and a Long Islands is the only liquor i enjoy drinking. Everything else.. well, nothing good ever came out of it.
I myself enjoy the beer flavor more then the alcohol. But it also depends on my mood. If i just feel like keeping a constant buzz with some flavor, i hit up the heinekens or the bud's.. if i feel like getting drunk i hit up the steel reserve . And if i go out and i can find the Kirin beer import from Japan, i always gotta get it .
Jack/coke and Long Islands are usually what i drink when i go to the clubs n shit~

Well, if you think beer is gross, try a cider instead. I know of ciders based with apples, pears, peaches, even blueberries. I like beer, but I like ciders even better. They are not as "harsh", and are sweeter, as well as having a flavour you will be more familiar with.
As for suggesting a kit for making your own ale - I strongly suggest you stay the hell away from it. It is a very costly thing to do, and I have seen 2 people fail a similar attempt.

Something is wrong with you!!! There are so many beers in this world that there is absolutely no chance that you won't find one that you like. I guess you don't like the classic beers because they are too bitter or something like that but maybe you should try honey strong beer, cherry beer or any other beer among the vast brewing styles and flavors around the world.
Seriously, there are really tasty sweet beers as well, so don't give up and jump on the beer bandwagon!

I don't really like the taste of beer either. I usually drink cider on a night out. Bumers (Magners most other places) is my favourite, but there are a few other nice ones. Kopperberg Pear is quite nice too.

Its not a big deal, i drink alcohol to get drunk. Not because i like its taste, beer tastes like piss, strong liquors all taste the same to me. I cant differentiate a good wine from the one they give you at the church.
|
The only alcoholic drink who's taste I really enjoy is vodka. Everything else I drink to get drunk.
I find myself now after a bottle of wine wondering whether I should write some 'creative' bullshit and post it in my blog on TL.
I find I like the taste of something bitter and cruel. Like when I drink black coffee and people tell me how gross it is to have coffee without milk or sugar. Well that's the point, isn't it? You're taking a drug because life isn't good enough on its own, so why not take one that symbolises that.
|
yeah i support hoegaarden, it's currently my favorite beer think of a beer that goes down as smooth as keith's but actually has some taste to it (actually you might give keith's a try, but you'll just think you were drinking water.. still you certainly won't hate it) oh and it and has no bitter aftertaste everyone i've convinced to try this beer has unequivocally *at least* said it's "pretty good"; the majority love it

I used to drink a lot of black coffee, but it wrecks havoc with your digestion. Coffee is rather acidic, so if you don't dilute it with anything else, it's rather harsh on your stomach and intestines. Now I just add a little bit of nonfat milk so as to preserve my digestion until I'm 50 years old.

I hate hoegarden, that tasted like sweet crap. I also can't drink sugar filled vk's and all other pansy drinks. Not a fan of ciders either, they taste like piss water.
Corona + San Miguel with lime is the shit. Or pretty much any spirit, to be honest I mainly drink to get drunk as hell. But I'm English, it's what we do.

Beer is nice, but like coffee it's not something you will find good instantly. Sometimes I think people just pretend that they think beer is "good" or moreso that they want to think it is good. I mean I do like beer but I can't say I get ecstatic if I drink a certain beer, although I can think that it's quite nice.
So I think when it comes down to it, a big percentage of beer drinking is some sort of construct in our heads that makes us think there's something special with beer. Also another theory of mine is that it's actually the alcohol that boosts our warm feelings towards beer; now if there wasn't any alcohol in beer probably no one would drink it.
Red wine is maybe the same, but i'm personally hotter for wine because it's a different, more intense, tasting sensation to red wine.

I thought it was just because I didn't have a tolerance to the caffeine (I don't want to become dependent on it) that my friends would always have large gigantic coffees, and my parents, and everyone else I knew. But I guess it was just because they happen to prefer their coffee with cream.
It's not that I don't like fruity things... I love apple juice. It's that I don't particularly want to mix them with alcohol or whatnot.
On the topic of brewing... I've known some people who did their own beer, and my granddad was a chemist who used to make his own champaign or something. They liked it fine. Couldn't really give you advice though.. Just be really careful following the instructions :S Well actually... My parents also 'made' their own wine... But what that really means is they went to some place that will mass produce it for your really cheaply. They got one red, and one white, and filled like 200 empty bottles and it ended up costing something like 2 dollars a bottle. I think they taste fine.

I like the taste of beers too. Not really stouts. Too thick. But ales, lagers. They are great. I heard wine is easier to make than beer though. Don't know if that's your thing, but it may be smart to start with something easier. More room for error, less sanitation needed for wine.
