This is a lovely, folksy chant full of brightness and lightness and determination. It is the perfect opening track for a debut album. Sufjan Stevens would be proud, as would Animal Collective and The Postal Service. So am I, and I have no connection but a vague geographic one and, now, an emotional one based pretty much on the above song. I’m gushing like a school girl over here and all I want to do is see them live as soon as possible.

a couple of mp3s, more videos over here

“Freelance Whales have managed to channel something eerie, dreamlike, and seemingly autonomous – the sum of the players being much more than each individual part” – Mark Steffen, HEAVEmedia

“Amazingly, Freelance Whales are even more arresting live than they are on record. They exhibit the exuberance of a young band that feels lucky to be sharing ideas with their audience” – Leo Maymind, Earfarm

“It just doesn’t feel like kids we grew up with should be this free, so we figure this five-piece has been transported from some alternate universe or simpler time when being gleeful was more important than anything else.” – RCRD LBL

Fucking awesome! Thank you, sir! Achingly beautiful.

Edit: is there anywhere I can buy an actual physical copy of this CD? Google turns up nothing but shitty iTunes downloads.

I also wanted to say I'm looking forward to future "Band Lookout" blog posts--I think we may have similar tastes in music, although I really don't like Passion Pit (BL Blog #1) that much: they have too much random noise for me.

A band I would suggest you check out is The Rural Alberta Advantage. If you like Freelance Whales a lot, you might also really dig The Antlers, especially their album "In the Attic." It's a bit more mellow and less folksy but still has that weird/beautiful "searching" quality to it, like so many great bands I love (Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Mates of State, Neutral Milk Hotel, etc.).

You should check out Gentle Giant. They have been around for 30 years and people still don't know who they are. They make the above sound like a bunch of recycled ALT scensters...

Shrug, I don't find Gentle Giant nearly as evocative as Freelance Whales. I really like the finger-picked banjo emoting plaintively over the drone of the guitars. To each his own.

this is exactly what i didnt like about FW. woeful and emo... for its own sake. there is also no contrast. no ebb and flow. its all ebb. im a musician myself, but my background is in so-called progressive rock (viz, crimson, yes, genesis, zappa, rush). i'm used to a higher standard of muscianship, i guess. and i went to school in athens, Ga so i've had my fill of so-called indie rock. to each his own.

i can't get into shit when it sounds like they just found a few cool instruments at a garage sale and laid down some tracks. i respect that ingenuity but it doesnt make my balls tingle.

but GG if you really listened to the GG. i just wanted to give folks a taste of what "experimental" used to mean.
