The every so hyped Guildwars 2. Taking the same motto as Blizzard with Starcraft 2; "its done when its done." I can only hope to expect it to come out late in 2010, but who really knows what ANET is up to. First a little tid bit about GW2 who havn't heard it already. It broke a new ground in pvp with 8v8 GvG's and bringing top guilds to Taiwan and Germany. The PvE was lackluster and medicore at best-I can honestly say PvE crapped on pvp to make it utterly what it is today-Buildwars. The free to play got kiddies around the world to come, but for how long would grinding for a diamond-studderd-ruby axe of death slaying hold them? This lynchpin of guildwars sticking with its motto of free-to-play was its catch and its death. With constant expansion packs and new skills/professions the game lost its originallity and slowly fell from its legacy to a bad dream. How many of us started to play this intruiging genre of mmorpg because it wasn't 10-15 a month to play? Started when I was 16 quit when I hit 19 now 21 and waiting for a rebirth of GW in form of yet another F2P. But is it worth waiting for another disaster to happen? How can Anet provide the upkeep of a game without a subscription, let alone produce a "differnt" mmorpg without a monthly fee? Now with a stream of income and the realization that paying 15 a month is nothing as long as the game you play isn't complete garbage. In this economy do yourself a favor ANET; charge a fee and produce a game that won't shit on itself in a year.

ArenaNet has learned a lot about what makes a fun MMO. They're going to have great improvements in GW2 but its going to be at the expense of being more like WoW. Hopefully not too much, I just heard about how world PvP works and its closer to how I had hoped/thought Guild Wars: Factions was going to work, which gets me excited about the game.

Seeing how Guild Wars has sold over 7 million units of the game I am pretty sure the game is able to finance Guild Wars 2 for right now. Also they have an in game store that sell character slots, and so forth which brings in extra money.
EDIT: Another thing when Guild Wars was released it's F2P baseline, I think, changed the MMO/Online landscape proving to the industry such a thing could work. Guild Wars was and is a cash cow for NCsoft, hell wasn't it Kotaku that reported the sales of Guild Wars financed the making of Tabula Rasa, another game, and even portions of Aion as well? I think Guild Wars 2 will also bring in an influx of gamers, and cash for NCsoft as well.

I really enjoy GW. Each expansion has been better than the one before it which gives me great confidence in the sequel.

I played Guild Wars for a few months, then I got bored. I had a 55 monk before they got nerfed, I use to tear shit up!

I still play gw gvg competitively, though honestly its only 3-4 times a month for serious playing, mainly getting the QPs for the monthly tournament then playing in it. ;o
I'm really hoping that they keep the highly competitive pvp in some form for GW2, and then don't make the same mistakes they made with the first one to make it not work: They need to support 3rd parties in making tournaments/ladders (iccup, korea in general being a 3rd party tournament holder for SC, etc) rather than having it all be exclusively run through anet. They need to continue to provide actual rewards and actual tournaments, instead of automated tournaments worth nothing. And they need a more advanced ladder/matchmaking system.
Those are the things I can think of off the top of my head for them to get GW2 going in terms of competitive play. But who knows what the hell they're going to do. Based on GW1 they are going to solely cater to PvE. Hopefully that will be fun for awhile at least, rather than the grind-fest that GW1 is now.

I actually JUST started playing GW, and after playing the trial for a week, I bought the trilogy AND EotN. suffice it to say I think this game is pretty great so far, and I'm not even done with prophecies yet. Hell not even halfway through.
