This is nothing compared to Ukraine. Here we have some contentious disagreement, there it was just straight up hostility and misinformation from every side.

Instead of those Barrin rules we should just enforce the charity rule, where one side must interpret the other side's arguments as charitably as possible. This xDaunt vs the world argument goes on for way too long when xDaunt clearly lays out his argument on page like xx58 and kwark keeps quibbling with him about the definition of "disproportionately".

The unfortunate reality is that most of the posters in that thread don't have the capacity to do this. It's a really sad state of affairs. I'm starting to wonder why I post in there because all of the liberal posters who actually could do it are either gone or rarely post anymore.

I'm more left than right, though I'd like to think that I can call out BS from the left when I see it. The thread often just goes off the deep end - people get convinced that they are right, and with something approximating a religious fervor they feel that any form of argument is justified precisely because they are convinced of their correctness. That often leads to the kind of discussion we saw with xDaunt against the world on a legal argument that he provided pretty good reasons for.

My rule is, if the discussion feels poisonous I leave. If they don't let it go then I tell them to fuck off. I'm not willing to have a discussion that is entirely voluntary with a hostile opposition, because there's nothing to be proven here. I'm here because I'm interested enough in the issues to read about and discuss them, and when I am not, I leave.

Wasn't me but he does have a previous ban for referring to Iraqis as sand niggers and a few other mod items. He was already on super thin "just give me a reason" ice.

If I had my way that topic wouldn't have been unlocked. Perhaps the only good thing to come out of the Trump campaign though is that nobody can claim with a straight face that racism in America isn't a real problem anymore. We have new polls on it daily with 40% or so of the population affirming their racism.
