Or the "regulars" with their incredibly complex "thread culture" could just make an IRC chatroom with each other and let also other people who haven't read thousands of pages of the thread talk about US politics on TL?
This "problem" is yet another perfect example why TL's approach to politics discussion (hiding it in one thread) is complete shit.

create your own megathread with no reading requirement for non-regulars where you can talk amongst yourselves about the same thing every day like gold fish. you can post all the youtube videos you want and post things you are sure will never be read, or at least if read, quickly forgotten

think of it this way - the us politics thread is a house party. you dropped in for whatever reason. there are people having conversations about stuff. you dont butt in with whatever you want to talk about all of a sudden.

It's not that we relegate political discussion to a single thread, it's just that TL has a megathread culture. You're free to create threads on other topics, though they'll need to be distinct (i.e., not "US Politics Megathread #2")

Call it the 0-piss megathread. No piss allowed.
Honestly though, the US Politics thread generally turns into the "catch all politics thread" given how Eurocentric this forum can be.

Is that really so? I have discussed the megathread situation with mods before and the answer I got is that they don't want the politics discussion to leak out of the megathreads and thus no threads on single political topics in US or EU are allowed. Has that changed?

And that's exactly what makes zero sense on a public forum. The thread has really become a closed society - coupled with the observation I made above that the existence of the thread precludes any other discussion on the topics on TL (which might be false, if tofucake is right, but I hold that that would contradict previous mod statements), this situation is pretty absurd.

I find your fascination with piss fascinating, do you have any interesting childhood traumas?

That's your name, o-piss-ka. Don't hide from it, embrace your urean nature.
A megathread collapses the cross-posting on many issues into one thread, which lends itself well to long-winded people but also has the advantage of removing redundancy in arguments. People who are new to the conversation who don't know the context can feel free to join, but frankly they need to just blend in for a while until they get the idea of where everyone stands. It's always a gradual process of becoming part of the conversation.

First, stop fighting.
Second, I personally think that a separate thread for a specific topic, like "Trump's New Tax Plan" or whatever, would be fine, but other mods may disagree, and I won't speak for them if they already told you no. Best I can do is suggest you ask whoever told you no to give you a go-ahead on a new political thread.
|
First, I would just like to make it clear that me and LightLord are not fighting. Second, I am not gonna make the new thread, I want other people to do it and mainly to just read it, but I think the atmosphere is very discouraging to say the least.
Yeah, that's me, always fighting for other people's right to do what I want them to do. Literarly story of my life.

sure, we'll make our way back to some issues eventually. i'm just more against having new folks insert themselves into the conversation and be like THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT IDK WHAT YALL WERE DISCUSSING PREVIOUSLY.

There's not really any way to avoid that kind of thing in a megathread without making a rule about never straying off the current topic, which would pretty effectively kill the thread.

Really, if you're new then treat it like walking into a conversation at a party. You can join, you'll find your way into the discussion eventually, but we're not all going to drop our conversation to fill you in on the context. Figure it out by gradually becoming part of the conversation.

I think people going back and reading enough of the thread that they're now behind and then constructing a decent post shows they want to actively engage. It might be a bit jarring, but I'd think you want to grow the userbase of the thread?
|
Posters who pop in with substantive or thoughtful topic changes, interruptions, or questions are generally met with a good response, seems to me.
|
yeah, and thats 100% fine. i enjoy reading something well thought out and on topic from someone who isnt a ultra jaded regular.
what id rather us avoid is some guy who randomly shows up and derails the conversation with an unrelated or at best tangential one liner. its not something to kick a guy out of a party for, but it's kind of rude.
if we can come to some sort of agreement on this hopefully farva + mods can add some kind of general guideline to the OP?

Here's a novel idea: ignore the shit that you don't want to discuss in the thread.

Those kinds of posts you should probably report for low content (if you can report, which all of you guys can) as it's against commandments 3 and 4, and not thread specific.

Imagine someone walked in to the conversation and said "Hey guys can you tell me why it isn't ok to call black people monkeys? I don't understand why people say that's racist." There's nothing inherently banworthy about that post, since it's a legitimate question asked in good faith. But I'm sure as hell not willing to start that discussion again and I'd prefer that the person who asked that just, as the expression goes, lurks some more until they fill in the details they aren't sure about.
