Ratings for users? What I dream of on TL

-I couldn't find whether a thread like this has been made, did 4 searches, found no result every time, so sorry if it has already been discussed-

Would TL ever implement a rating system so people can rate other users' comments? I have seen it used on other websites, sometimes it's effective sometimes irrelevant.

What I dream of (might be too hard to code though)

- you can rate someone else as a poster/ forum member. The higher your rating, the larger your impact on their rating whether you decide positive or negative. It's done in ELO style, 0-2400. You can 'level up' from posting level 0 to either 1, 2 or 3, or down to -1, -2 and -3...Everyone starts at say 1200, and once you get to 1700 you are level 1, 1900 you are level 2 and 2200 you are level 3. 1000 you are level -1, 700 you are level -2, 300 you are -3. Safeguards are made to prevent abuse to the system, for example you can't double rate someone, you can only switch your rating for them from positive to negative.

- There is a forum created for only level 2-3 posters, everyone else is not allowed...

- Once you get down to -2, your post length is limited, you better increase the quality of what you're posting.

- Once you get down to -3, your post frequency is limited. It's your last chance to stop sucking.

I have no idea about coding limitations, though it seems this would be incredibly hard. I think it would result in a much better forum.

Post length limited? That's a bad idea. Personally, I'd rather have people actually read posts and determine if they are good or bad rather than look at a user's level to determine if they read the post (which is sort of already done with the icons and post counts).

no offense, but if this idea was the movie inception, the oscars would the bad idea awards and inception would win all the awards. afterwards, u realize the idea is not actually the movie inception cuz that movie wasn't bad at all.

I'm having trouble working out whether baller actually cares about this, or he just wanted to make a joke. If the latter is the case, I commend you for making jokes even in the most obscure parts of TL, and furthering your career as TL's jocular equivalent of Banksy. If the former, would you care to offer any reasons why it's a bad idea?

Tofucake, post length limited might be a bad idea, but what about the concept of ratings?

-.-

I searched:

Rate Users
User Ratings
Negative and Positive Ratings
Posting Quality Rating

Thanks for the links though. Unfortunately, people just don't seem to share my sense of hatred for bad posters who ruin discussions.

So, in short, I would rate your post -1, since you didn't actually read mine yet asked me a question (which was answered in the post you didn't read).

I think its enough if the admins sort out the bad posters, no need for additional rating.
+We all know the admins, banelings and progamers would score high anyways no matter how good/bad they post, so popularity > quality .

This reminds me of this Karma system that some forums have. People would +1 cool or +1 zing and stuff like that, and people's Karma or points would raise because of it.

I think that stuff was really cool and fun. Don't know if it's applicable and even suitable for TL, but just saying it reminded me of it.

But to have consequences based on how other people rate your posts....eh....not too much of a fan of that.

Good idea in theory, but it would quickly become a game of cliques and politics... :\

There's always something good to rewarding posters for quality posts. The problem is that the majority of posters, frankly, aren't quality, and also aren't good judges of quality, and therefore, your system would lead to people being upvoted/downvoted for dumb reasons.

Also, the potential rewards and penalties for it basically make no sense. Perhaps if you're severely down voted, a limit to your post frequency makes sense, but a reduction of post size is completely counter productive.

A special forum for only quality posters also makes no sense what so ever.

In theory, rating systems and Rep systems are a great idea, but in practise on every forum that I've seen it done, it just devolves into people plastering "rep 4 rep" all over their signatures and posts, and as Chill said, politics and cliques.

I've always thought that a point system would be good, but after seeing Destiny's fans (as a group) (nothing bad about Destiny in particular) imagine what would happen if a ratings system came into play.

I've only seen point/rep systems work in a forum where people don't particularly know each other TOO closely like Slickdeals (even though SC2 has created a massive influx of new TL members).

Curious to think what does TL staff think of a up-vote/down-vote system much like Reddit? Except for TL, up-votes/down-votes do not attach to one's account, but rather only reflects on that particular post that one has made.

Terrible idea. The idea with this community is that you submit enough content and make enough good posts that people begin to know that you're a quality contributor. People don't need rating systems for that.

We've said a billion times we don't think it will work. I've even said it in this thread.
