I'm way too old and grumpy to play competitively. Also I don't really find joy in playing arpgs in multiplayer format. I wish we could get a good new arpg where you can just play SSF by your lonesome but also have some rankings etc. for those more competitively minded (like Grim Dawn).

Have you seen a Barbarian? Maybe they just are that big I mean it's all fiction and I have seen female dwarfs with beards in video games
ive seen amazons on futurama. not sure if that counts. fred flintstones wife wasnt the same size as him at least.
Death by SNU SNU? xD
I just treat stuff like this as a galaxy far, far away and character looks are creators/ artists choice. Same with Asia MMOs and big boob female character models btw. Maybe they really can wield swords the size of trees? Maybe they have a special metal alloy that is really light? Who knows
Well, Blizzard has this thing with ginormous shoulder armor especially in WoW. Perhaps they made all the characters broad shouldered so the shoulder pads can fit? Or they really just got lazy and used the same model and skeleton for both male and female characters, at least for barbarians?
You clearly don't see where this is headed. Big shoulder armor on normal shoulders, and you think they have broader shoulders for that normal big shoulder armor to look less huge? Fuck no. We are about to see shoulder armor that the world has not seen before. Imagine how much shoulder armor you can fit on those shoulders.

It's an arms race, a clash of civilizations. Anime has oversized swords so Western developers need shoulder armor big enough to block them! That barbarian is going to stroll into a Final Fantasy game and block sword swings with his shoulder armor.

Ahh... The good old days of playing just with your friends, throwing LAN parties etc. Nowadays you're being forced to play with some randos from the interwebs because every game must be a "service".

You can't really sell cosmetics or progress or solutions to problems you introduced to people who play on their own system. Sadly game companies have realized that you can make a lot more money this way. Those of us who remember the good old times are basically forced to only do indie games at this point, because there you just buy a game and then have a game to play.
AAA is albout selling you the same game 5 times. Fun is secondary.

Right, because you can't play D3 with a game that only your friends can join. Oh wait...
I understand wanting a pure offline mode so you can play without needing a stable internet connection, because that is not always a thing. But lets not make up bullshit about how your forced to play with randoms.

Isn't D4 supposed to be "open world" kinda like Lost Ark? Not really interested in that. Diablo for me was always mainly a solo dungeon-crawler (I don't count D3, it was bad).

When was the last time you played Diablo 3?
A few years ago? Got to like rift 70 and got bored. Didn't even bother to create another character in it or farm a different set during different season.
I'm not really interested in gameplay loop like that.

We still try to do 1 LAN party a year with some old classics+new games and there are still a few titles which get released with good co-op. Most of them are indie though but NioH2 for example I consider a genuinely fun experience in general, has 3 player co-op and was released by Sony. It doesn't have a LAN modus though, which sucks big time.

This doesn't matter. I know a lot of people say D3 changed a lot and got a lot better. For some people though, me included, the fundamental reasons why D3 is a bad game never changed.
I mean, was anyone really expecting this game not to have a cosmetics shop or a season pass? I'm fine with that, as long as you can't buy powers (of any kind) for you characters and the purchases remain purely cosmetic. Also I'm pretty sure they will be adding boosts later on after an expansion or two... This is Blizzard after all and there was no way in hell (see what I did there ) D4 would release without an in-game store. It's the new normal and no amount of complaining and rage tweeting will ever convince a company to not empty the wallets of the weaker minded individuals of their player base. It's just not gonna happen, I've given up on that a long time ago.
What's immediately worrisome with cosmetic buys of this type in this kind of game is that it's going to obfuscate the information that you get from seeing a player's outfit. You expect it may make it impossible to tell what kind of gear a player is actually using and what it does to their stats or build until their character has made a good bunch of moves showing what they can do and how much it hits for that you should be trying to predict. In the context of open world pvp or pvp in general or even coop or almost any gameplay situation with characters that you just met or not, it's quite a negative (heck even when just seeing a screenshot). I prefer to just earn my character visuals from what i obtain in game and let it have visual meaning corresponding to my choice of gear as well. So yeah that just comes of course as a negative.
If it was just some dyes or such stuff though, I wouldn't care much I guess. To take another game as an example, I don't really care about skins in PUBG at all cause they don't hide what type of gear the players are using at all, and if you have 0 skins yourself you're 200% fine using some stuff you just earn by playing. I did actually buy some bunch of pubg "gcoins" which I'm not using cause I was appreciative of how the game dev and communication was going. They do need to be able to for example deal with cheaters which takes quite some effort.. Valorant also sells expensive skins but they just don't matter at all if you don't want them and you can still earn some skins by playing if you want.. I think that's fine, cause it doesn't hide any info, it litterally doesn't matter (also ofc the game is free to play). In fact in PUBG, using paid skins can be slightly detrimental because they are usually more flashy and easier to see than default or common skins and clothes^^
Again in diablo if there are dyes in the game, it could be interesting to trade them or earn them by playing, but that wouldn't be ok if you can generate them with money. So isn't it just better to make it non buyable. Just setup optional subscription/donation system for supporting game^^
I don't know, I enjoy the purely cosmetic ones, and while I understand where the PvP type concern is coming from, I've never really felt it to be too impactful in games I've played. Although to be honest, the only games where I've really PvP'd where gear would come in to things were WoW where people could hide their gear with Transmogs, and D2 in which you couldn't really tell anything by the persons gear showing anyway.

I wonder why is it a new normal though? Guild Wars 2 has been going on strong for the past 10 years with no monthly subscription, no battle pass or anything like that (you buy a base game, then you buy the expansions and you get all the content in them).
They do have an in-game store for cosmetics and such but you can simply ignore it if you want. What this shows however is that you can have a fully priced game with oldschool expansions and still make it viable. If GW2 could do it for 10 years and after this time still seem to have an average of 600k daily players (and their player count is on the rise actually) they must be doing something right without resorting to all this garbage that came from the freemium games.
So, please, do not tell people that "it is the norm" and "they should accept it" because not everyone has given up like you did.
^ Simply the case of publicly traded companies versus not. Blizzard "has" to maximize profits, ArenaNet can be content in simply succeeding. It's unfortunate, but its the 'the new normal' for ActiBlizz, EA, Ubisoft, etc etc.

Yeah i know opinions may vary on this, also played wow i dont like transmog i only play vanilla and you can tell things like the power level and sometimes a bit more from the gear you see in pvp I personally like it better for sure, makes more sense. In D2 i dont really pvp but I think in coop to an extent yeah you can tell what kind of items people are using by looking at them I like that.
