Witcher is awesome. But I've always been slightly puzzled, the books are before the games is the story in the games also the work of the guy who wrote the books or what?
Either way I'm glad this is in the works, open world- style seems quite the undertaking but if anyone can do it correctly its CD Projekt Red! From what i read in the books (only read a couple) they are from before Witcher 1 where he looses his memory.
Geralt dies in the last book. The first game begins with his "resurrection" (hence the amnesia). The author of the books had very little to do with the games' story, except for the main motive (it's hinted at in the last book that Geralt could be well and alive thanks to Ciri; Both Geralt and Yennefer, who died trying to heal him, "regained consciousness" in a weird looking place at the very end).

great atmosphere and story in the witcher 2, i especially liked the graphics and feel of everything. The combat was completely dull though, if they change that completely it could be great.

I have read all the books and from what i remember, games story doesnt have much to do with books. Characters, places and main ideas are the same, but games plot goes on its own (somewhere between books you can say). Anyway, cant wait for this!

great news, looking forward to this after getting disappointed with elders :c

Honestly the last chapter in the witcher 2 just looked like them running out of time and being well we said that we launch at X date.

Huge respect to one of the few studios left that actually care about making amazing games. Can't wait for The Witcher 3 and also Cyberpunk 2077.

Im happy that there is a game to the books, yet the story doesn't really match the books. My first thought was that I wouldn't be able to play this without ruining the books for me, but then I noticed that it's scheduled for 2014, so I'll already have forgotten 90% of the books.

So looking forward to this.

The books are completely their own thing except for the characters, places and such so you won't ruin anything reading the books. For me, atleast, having read some of the books made the games more enjoyable than they would've been had I not known some of the backstory etc.

The games' story takes place after the books (it's kind of grafted onto the last book's ending, not really cannon). It's more the world as a whole and the atmosphere that's borrowed from the books.

Good theory but games are not developed linearly (except maybe the first bit that is usually a prototype).

So, if I have a computer that could run The Witcher 2 smoothly only on low, does this mean I'll need a new computer in 2014?

If they optimise it so that it runs well on dated machines on low settings, sure. If they decide to bump everything up a few notches, probably not. I could run The Witcher 2 smoothly on medium/high hybrid settings, so I'm hoping it'll be fine on medium/low for The Witcher 3.
Not sure how their decision to release the game on PS4/Xbox720 will influence it. Likely they'll complete everything on and for the PC and then just port it to the consoles. So it probably won't make much difference how well it can run on the PC.

I thought the Witcher 2 was rather disappointing. It's no doubt a well made game, and artistically amazing, but I found the combat, the difficulty, and the spell balance all off (maybe they patched all that I don't know). Not to mention it was very frustrating that they decided to make act 2 have 2 completely different story lines, which by it's own right is awesome, but when it's followed up by a terribly short and useless act 3 it just felt wrong. I also think the atmosphere and feel of the Witcher 1 was superior to the second. Something about Witcher 1 was so unique and awesome and it didnt quite translate in Witcher 2, at least for me.
That being said, I'm still really excited about what they do in this 3rd one.

I also miss TW1 combat style...I honestly hated TW2's so much it kept me from finishing the game :\ I've replayed TW1 like 3 times though, haha

Can't fucking wait to see what they do with this, as I loved Witcher 2 (with the story being probably the most appealing aspect of the game).
I am concerned however with this change to the open world, "skyrim" style. RPGs in that vein seem to be focusing more and more on 'how big can I make my world' and 'how much stuff (quests, dialogue, items) can I toss in' that they seem to forget that unless there is a lot work put into these additions, they end up being incredibly superficial and, ultimately, shallow.
I struggle to give a fuck that game X provides you with Y hours of gameplay when that gameplay is made up of the same repeated fetch/kill quests (handed out by characters who are completely irrelevant to the overall storyline) that take place in the same rehashed dungeons populated by the same bloody enemies that perhaps change skins every now and again. I've been sucked in by the reviews, the amount of things to do and the claims of choice/freedom made in relation to games like Skyrim and regrettably bought some of these games. Boring is the first word that springs to mind when someone says Skyrim and I have to wonder what the point of this freedom is when it is all meaningless illusion (in that there is a lot of content but it's all the same shit), and insignificant to the actual storyline.

I bought the Witcher 1 on Steam and really, really wanted to like this game but I couldn't go past the first two chapters. Vizima + outskirts is... so... long...

YES YES YES YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH FINALLY
Totally not excited

So it's gonna be like a combination of Elder Scrolls and Monster Hunter with the amazing CD Projekt's storytelling.
Easily best game ever.
