Is it ill advised to talk about picks at this point? I'm debating with myself whether to try for a decent power that has a low (but non-zero) probability of getting passed up or just picking the worst power (imo) so that I at least have something.

risk.nuke = Janitor marvellosity = rng CPR/Janitor OK you three, you know what to do. Marvellosity, just in case its not obvious, dont tell us the results of the rng pick until after the picking phase is over. Thanks for taking one for the team @Snarfs: I dont think talking about what you want to pick/will pick. We want Mafia to be as unsure of picks as possable. If town starts informing their picks, it makes it easy for scum to snipe better roles.

That said, my numbers were [2,2]. I didn't give much thought when I was choosing my numbers. I was originally going to do [4,2] but risk declared that as his number and I didn't want to end up at the bottom. Also, lol at deconduo. Assuming that he went through with [1,1] I'm surprised no one else picked it. Idk why, I just thought that someone would troll him and pick the same number. Would have been pretty funny.

As paqman says it can't hurt town or help scum. I'm okay with this attitude. Posting your numbers as part of something more constructive is fine. And to practice what I preach, I picked [5][1]. Regardless, a post such as this: On May 16 2012 10:24 talismania wrote: does nothing for the town except add one more post on that page. I want people to try and read the entire thread. I also want people to remain as active as possible. Spam encourages people to skim or not read the thread right now because "there are too many pages to go through." I don't want the thread to have that effect on people. I picked 15,1 On May 16 2012 13:21 PaqMan wrote: The problem is posts such as the one I pointed out don't even qualify as "discussion." The only thing worse than silence is spam. Spam allows the mafia to blend in but still remain completely useless to the town (which is what they want to do anyways in an ideal situation). Plus, like I mentioned before, then people are less likely to want to read the thread or read the thread less carefully and miss important posts.Yepp, I don't understand that. Some discussion is always better than complete silence. Makes it too easy for scum.

CPR and Janitor are probably the most dangerous mafia roles, so we want to know exactly where they are and who has them. This is why we assigned them to #1 and #2 picks. This is fine if town are #1 and #2, but if there is a mafia there, they can claim they picked CPR/janitor, when in reality they picked some other good mafia role, and had a teammate who is at the bottom of the draft pick CPR/janitor instead. This way they get 2 strong roles instead of 1 strong 1 weak. However if you claim you will RNG between CPR/janitor then its a huge risk for mafia to drop down a role. They have a 50/50 chance of both getting killed AND losing the pick, being left with a man down and another with a vanilla pick. It keeps them honest and stops them from dropping strong roles down the draft list.

I should have paid more attention to such things but my draft pick wasn't designed to place high :/ I'll go along with this as it seems pretty sensible, if a bit sucky for me

Problem is then the most dangerous roles can go lost in the depths of the list. You will still get a role if top spots lied. I've been where you are, consider it a team game where your most important task is annoying but will be a big part of your impact on the game. In any case, you are inviting scum to gamble on you not following the plan by expressing doubt. I'm keeping a list of numbers for my own use, and just by the knowledge of my numbers [3] [1] I'm able to reconstruct the remaining players first number, with the exception of an unimportant detail. So there is no reason to post more numbers.
