I have the old gog.com version and this happens when it tries to auto-update, I've tried several times during a few days period. + Show Spoiler + Really want to play Iorveth side of the story now especially with new stuff being in. I had that problem with 2.0 and had to download the 2.1 patch manually. Don't know which version you're on though. And you might still want to d/l the EE patch.

And I had the same experience with Witcher 1 as you did BeMannerDuPenner. Some people are just into nostalgia to much, for me Witcher 1 had terrible gameplay.. the reason I could not be arsed to play. Edit** Ow and btw, this is all you need to get hyped up to play the game. I'm sure it has been posted already but it's a crime not to show it to people who are doubting to play the game :D

My computer can barely handle any games otherwise I'd have purchased for pc. Graphically it's not up to par, gameplay-wise it's the same as the PC version. Wholeheartedly recommended!

Is this game better than the first one? The first one was nigh unplayable with shitty gameplay, shitty UI, shitty voice acting, everything. The storyline might not have been that bad if I ever got to experience any of it, but I only beat the first city before quitting out of sheer frustration. It was a waste of hard drive space and the $5 I got it for on steam sale, and I'll be damned if I make that mistake again.

The only thing holding me back is how terrible the first game was. So the question is: Is this game better than the first one? Voice acting is inconsistent in the second one. It's not always bad, but the quality seems to shift between each line (Geralt is really back and forth). Also the choice for dialog doesn't match up to what you actually say. At one point in the beginning, someone offers to shake your hand when you're tied up. One of your response choices is to say: "Haha, funny", yet what you actually say is "Fuck you". Very different. Combat is a lot better than the first one, though expect to dodge a lot until you get some skills.

The dialog is very well written, the story is deep, the characters are well developed, the settings feel alive and vibrant, and the visuals are beautiful. The combat system and character advancement/customization options are just so horrible. Its like Kingdoms of Amalur in reverse. I'll probably play through it though, its compelling enough. Dunno where you are in the game, but after two chapters or so you'll be more used to it. Witcher 1 had way worse combat system, I don't think Witcher 2's combat system is bad actually. It is rough and unresponsive and unrewarding but that's the whole point. Real combat punishes small timing errors which Witcher 2 does too. Sure, in the start it's mostly roll around with shield and try to get a few hits in but it does get more varied I think.

You're good to go as soon as you get the EE, but you could get some mods that you may find to your liking like Zero Weight Mod at http://witcher.nexusmods.com/
