I was talking with a friend of mine that came back from a season at the states and he says that 99% percent of americans dont know anything at all about Brazil, he even said that a few friends he made back there still believe today that he has a monkey servant.

I realize this is average than normal, but still, what do you know ?

What comes to mind beyond carnaval, samba and soccer ?

Sorry if this feels like a useless thread.

I know that it's the only "democratic" country on planet earth where the elections are run by the judicial system. Because of that they implemented a fraudulent and legally unverifiable electronic election system where it is technically impossible to recount votes. Which only exists in their country because if you try to sue them, those judging it are the same ones who built it.

And 99.9% of the brazilians actually think they're electoral system is so technological advanced and that all other countries envy them. When in reality, the brazilian voting machines got banned in all of the 40 countries that tried it.

Other than that there is that Ronaldo guy everyone keeps talking about.

I'm not sure that is a fair question. Even if one travels to the country they don't know the whole country. Take the US for example. I've been to about 7 states and to be honest, I couldn't tell you that much about the United States as awhole. I could tell you about general areas, but it is a super vague question.

Take my own state, New York for instance - Where I live is pure techno-burb and large isolationism from the rest of the state. Upstate New York is COMPLETELY different then the rest of lower NY. Politically, socially, economically. If you asked me what a typical city in Brazil is like, I'd probably have to point out not much different then say LA - large social boundaries but still room to grow. If you ask me about rural brazil, I probably couldn't say much.

I did learn about the city project in Brasil though in my Urban Society class. One of the few planned modern cities in this hemisphere.

Hehe, is that Brasilia the new capital the built in the 50's ?

It was nice stimulus but the problem is that it almost feels like it was specifically made to quench the protesters who were kinda phisically moved away from the capital.

Brasil has some interesting buildings

Brazil speaks Portuguese, not Brazilian! Some people I know thought that the official language was Brazilian.

I know that Brazil is really different depending on which region you are talking about. The eastern areas are modernized with all the famous cities and northern area is poor and dominated by the Amazon rainforest.

Most Americans also think the main language of America is...American!

Bleh if you dont say anything about your country this thread is useless, because your question is almost as egotistical as saying 'what do you know about me?'

Some cool facts then

About one-fourth of all the world's known plants are found in Brazil.

Brazil’s natural resources include bauxite, gold, iron ore, manganese, nickel, phosphates, platinum, tin, uranium, petroleum, hydro-power and timber.

95% of Brazilian 18-29 years old population belives in religion

68% says they are deeply religious (same age range)

62% say they believe in reencarnation (same age range)

35% actually tryes to live up to church doctrines (same age range)

99.9% dont have faith in politics (this one I made up but so true)

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, soccer, surfing, Portuguese is the language, Acai (with an accent somewhere) berries, Rio de Janero, Brasilia is the capital... that's about it.
