I know that Brazil is really different depending on which region you are talking about. The eastern areas are modernized with all the famous cities and northern area is poor and dominated by the Amazon rainforest. Most Americans also think the main language of America is...American! I don't try to talk to my friends about geo-politicals or anything foreign for that matter. Did they mean American English as oppose to British English? I'm pretty sure every public school in United States has a class called English and I think most Americans go to school. It would be pretty hard not to know the name of the language you speak. btw, when you say American you are just talking about the United States, right?

Brazil is a big case study in international development. As such, students of politics, international relations, and perhaps economics in the United States have some familiarity with the political history of Brazil and some of the issues it faces.
Also, it's an absolutely wonderful film.

Favelas in Rio are a fucking war zone >_< I think you are like top 5 biggest country? not sure which place exactly though. Brazil has the biggest economy in SA. Brazil's capital is not Rio but Brasília. Your women are said to be hot. ... come to think about it I know absolutely nothing about Brazil's history besides being a Portuguese colony :/

As a brazilian that have visited once every single "important" country, at least over america and europe + japan, i have to say, i hate how people worldwide describes my country. Yes, I hate it... but I know it's not their fault, it's ours, at least from the past generations. Every single brazilian movie that becomes famous is about either poverty, soccer, women or natural things, and it's not only the movies, it seems like the most of brazilian people being so ignorant as our poor educational system allows them, love this image. Once I was talking about this with some friends from my college, and a couple of them had hosted foreigns from US and Canada, and all they shown to them was Maracanã and Copacabana beach, and their excuse was that these are the only things that make them feel pride for living in Rio. Some of the brazilians from tl.net just seem to think exactly as my friends, and this hurts me soo much, cause there are really lots of stuff other than this stereoptical shit... And for all the Americans who thinks Brazil is a poor country with only poor people living eith monkeys... you should know that we are the 3rd country in number of international turists, brazilians only visit less countries then Japaneses ans Americans. You also should know that our taxes are the highest around the world, I don't leave in a poor country (as a country), but in a country that doesn't know how to use money, a country where corruption is so intense that an ex-president who has been kicked from the presidency for being accused of corruption, has now returned to the ministery... Concluding, I blame it all on our political faillure that lasts more than 30 years, and finally I blame all the brazilians that seems to ignore the static situantion of our beloved country. We need a revolution, no more false democratic governors, no more fake presidents, no more public money stealing !!

Also I know that Brazil has a fairly active/large QuakeWorld community (or at least it did just a couple years ago). Definitely one of the biggest.

I know there are significant problems with drug trafficking which results in a lot of violence in "favelas," which are extremely poor urban slums. I'm also told by Brasilians I've spoken to that there is a lot of government corruption.
Edit: also I believe they have the largest population of ethnic Japanese outside of Japan.
