Tournament Guidelines Update

Community-driven tournaments are an exhilarating aspect of StarCraft II eSports, and we’re always thrilled with the passion and ambition that our players bring to life with their events. Every organized competition has to start somewhere, and we’re pleased to share that we’ve made a few updates to our guidelines for running tournaments. If you plan on running a tournament with a prize pool of $10,000 USD or less, you may not need to obtain any further license from Blizzard.

Check out our updated Tournament Guidelines Document to find out how to run a license-free StarCraft II tournament, and ensure that your event runs as smoothly as possible. Or, if you prefer, this information can also be found on our World Championship Series portal.

Furthermore, if you have any questions or concerns about running your tournament, feel free to contact us at sc-tourneyinfo@blizzard.com.

EDIT: Just to clarify, the license requirements for tournaments have always been there, they were just more stringent and complicated in the past, with a $5,000 cap.

I like this change. Makes it easier for small scale (regional) tournaments to take place.
I would still love to see automated "ladder" tournaments taking place like in wc3. Did they say anything about that?(at some point)

We know players like that and It's on our list of things to do,among many other things., or something like that.... aka Coming soon (tm).

This seems like enough to me. <$10k covers like 95% of all SC2 tournaments, so this change simplifies things for all but the big organizations that shouldn't have trouble obtaining licenses anyways.

iirc, it has been that for a long time.

Simplified application looks nice, only about 1.5 pages, seems relatively straightforward.

I believe I remember hearing, don't quote me on this, that TotalBiscuit said when he was doing the ShoutCraft Invitationals that it was anything over 5k. No sources. Just my brain recalling what could possibly be what it used to.

thats the reason why shoutcrafts had 5k pricepool and added the donations to players

Nice that they simplified it. But I am surprised that all tournaments have to be broadcasted on Twitch.

Yeah, that really sucks actually. Nice monopoly, bro. Some of the other restrictions are pretty weird too, considering they're applying them to literally any tournament anyone tries to put on with SC2.

It does not say you can't stream trough other sites, it just says that, in addition, you have to have a Twitch stream for it.

That Fits "no, blizz should go further" I think what you really want is a different question for the poll?

The poll asks is this change enough? nothing about if you likr the current change or not. It assumes everyone will have at least somewhat positive feelings on this (I'm sure a few people will find a reason to hate blizz) kinda pointless poll in my opinion, don't think any poll is required for this but anyway..

glad blizz is trying to make it easier I just hope this actually helps overall competition instead of stifling it, the more good tourneys there are the more incentive each tourney has to be better than the other and their previous selves

This is an improvement but they need to go further. I hope we'll see Shoutcraft come back, though the boat has probably sailed for the NASL
