Week 2 Lookback
by monk. and Waxangel
The season is still young, but Week Two of Proleague gave us a better picture of who might become the powerhouses and who could struggle to stay out of the bottom of the table down the line. Defending champs CJ Entus got off to a good, first place start with a 3 - 0 record, with SK Telecom chasing closely behind. On the other hand, Samsung KHAN is stuck with the last place spot for now, a surprise considering their good SC2 record in the hybrid Proleague. However, with Team Eight racing to the bottom with a 1 - 7 map score last week, KHAN might not be there for long.
As for the darlings of the foreign scene, EG-TL, it was a week with both good and bad news. On the plus side, they drubbed Samsung KHAN 4 - 0 for their first loss. On other hand, they took a 3 - 4 loss to CJ, where HerO and TaeJa both lost matches. Seeing as the Liquid Duo was one of the main reasons EG-TL was regarded highly coming into the season, one must wonder how they will perform as the season goes on.

KeSPA 8th Team
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/teams/icons/218.png)
After taking an 4 – 3 win over Samsung KHAN in the opening week, the KeSPA 8th team played more like the team most people were expecting when the rosters were revealed at the start of the season. A team where the ace BaBy plays a crucial role, and is hard pressed to get wins from anyone else when he falls (a 0 – 4 loss to SKT would follow later in the week).
The series served to highlight a critical weakness of the Eights, with BaBy getting easily sniped by the far lesser known Hitman. Having played mech builds in TvZ in the previous week of Proleague and in Code A matches, Hitman was able to prepare a strange but ultimately effective counter strategy consisting of mutas, roach drops, and a transition to brood lords before his opponent could find his bearings.
The silver lining the Eights was that their captain Jaehoon won his game at least, keeping him at 2/2 on the season. If he can continue to be a reliable second man to BaBy, then this team could piece together some more series wins down the line.

Two of the deeper SC2 rosters in the Proleague engaged in a close, hard-fought battle, with Woongjin winning due to their possession of the superior ZvZ player. The Ace Match map was predetermined as Tal'Darim Altar, a map that has been dominated by Zergs thus far (80% of entries are Zerg, and none of the daring non-Zerg entries have won a game yet). For all his great performances in MLG run online leagues, soO couldn't hold up to the GSL tested Soulkey in a ZvZ Ace Match.
Outside of the ace, the series contained a mixture of expected results and upsets. Key players soO, Rain, and Soulkey won their games, but we saw Code B > Code A upsets in Paralyze over sOs (sHy), and hOn_sin taking down Fantasy. Additionally, it was encouraging for Woongjin to see one of their best BW players in Zero pick up a win (with a baneling bust on Best), but they were left waiting for their BW Protoss ace Free to find his form as he took a bad loss to Rain.

The Samsung vs. STX featured the only Code S vs. Code S match of the week, as Innovation (Bogus) took on Roro in the ace match. In the aftermath, Samsung were denied a win in an ace match for their second consecutive game.
Interestingly, it was RorO who won his regular line-up game against Last (with overwhelming force of muta-bane-ling-infestor on Arkanoid), while Innovation was the one who didn't quite live up to his reputation as ace by dropping a game to Reality (Innovation's fast banshee was countered by even faster marine-hellion attacks).
RorO tried to bring the same style of play to the ace match on Ohana, using muta-ling-bane to retain some mid-game map control while he transitioned to hive. However, it proved to be almost completely ineffectual against Innovation, who shored up his defenses against a bust, and then sprang forward with a deadly pre-hive marine-tank timing. RorO tried to counter attack to buy time, but it was to avail as Innovation simply held at home and plowed through RorO's bases to take the series for his team.

EG-TL's quest for their first win was delayed once more, losing to yet another Proleague championship winning team. This time it happened to be CJ Entus, the defending champions who made a strong playoff run in the hybrid season based off their SC2 play.
Things seemed to be going swimmingly at first, with Jaedong and TaeJa overpowering Bbyong and Bong as expected. The foreigner duo of HuK and ThorZaIN fell listlessly after, but that was somewhat expected. However, things then took an ominous turn as key player HerO lost to Hydra, falling for his old nemesis in the slow-ling all-in. Luckily for EG-TL, JYP was able to make the save, taking down Effort with a three-base timing in a PvZ. It all came down to the ace match, and EG-TL answered a much-asked question from the fans by picking TaeJa over HerO as their ace. Meanwhile, CJ went with hero[join], their most tournament accomplished player, setting up a TvP clash on Ohana.
In yet another surprising result, Liquid's other ace fell to lesser known player, this time with all the marbles on the line. TaeJa left hero[join] to his own devices, allowing him successfully go for fast upgrades and fast templar tech. The investment paid off in spades for hero[join], as he was able to crush TaeJa in huge storm-timing attack, grasping hold of the lead and never letting go until the final GG.

Woongjin Stars
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/teams/icons/6.png)
The same KT Rolster that looked so dominating against a weakened EG-TL and a Jaedong-less Team 8 would go up against their first true challenge in Woongjin Stars. And while KT Rolster swept their first and second matches with 4-0 and 4-1 scores, they would soon feel what it would be like on the opposite side of the coin, falling 0-4 to the Stars. Everything seemed to go wrong for KT Rolster and the same team that had looked so in control before seemed clueless against a full strength Kespa team. Some of the losses were painful to watch, with Action failing to defend against a warp prism + sentry block, and Mind getting caught completely defenseless against a cloaked banshee.
But the story of the match had to be Flash. Flash's precision and his attention to detail in his match against Zenio was nowhere to be seen against Zero. Many times, Flash's head seemed to be in the clouds, wondering if perhaps he left the stove on in the teamhouse. His reaction times were horrendous as he lost army after army to simply due to not paying attention, either sieging tanks too late or only starting to split marines after half of them had already died. Unfortunately for Flash, this is not an isolated incident, as Flash has been known to make similar mistakes, most recently in his games against Baby in their recent GSL match. As Flash is obviously the heart and soul of KT Rolster, it's worrisome for the team's performance down the line.

Though on paper, this looked like a one-sided victory of a front-runner team over a back-crawling one, the final score doesn't do justice to how close this series actually was. First of all, as Team 8 is widely regarded as the weakest team in proleague, and as it was with Airforce ACE before them, it looks like teams are choosing to send weaker players against the Eights in order to give them more experience. SKT1 seemed to follow this rule, as s2 and yeOngJae, two non-regulars in SC2, were thrust out into the battlefield.
Team 8's Speed tried his best against s2 in a close game, but he could not overcome Zerg'derim Altar. Baby gained a sizable economic lead against Best, but lost it all in one unfavorable battle. Ryul2 actually reached the Infestor/Broodlord stage on equal terms against Fantasy, but Fantasy's scrappiness somehow allowed him to slowly and eventually whittle down Ryul2's entirely Infestor/Broodlord army down. And finally, yeOngJae versus Alone was probably the least close series; Alone tried cute tactics such as baneling drops followed by baneling landmines, but yeOngJae's combination of solid standard play and map abuse were more than enough to power through the Alone's Hello Kitty tactics.
And so a 4-0. As the season goes on, we're beginning to see Team 8 cementing themselves as SC2's Air Force ACE and SKT1 cementing themselves as SC2's SKT1.

CJ Entus
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/teams/icons/9.png)
STX and CJ are two of the hottest teams as of late. STX has Bogus; after reaching top four in the GSL, Bogus is probably one of the most hyped Kepsa players that exists. Meanwhile, few teams have as strong of a one-two punches as that of CJ's hero[jOin] and Effort combo. When the two teams clashed, there was a mixture of refined and raw play to be seen in the games. The most impressive win came from Bogus who microed his way to victory with just one well-executed attack against Hydra. And the biggest flop came from Trap, who fell to a standard 1-1-1 all-in like it was 2011. But by the time all the regularly scheduled matches were done and finished, the score was tied at 3-3 and it was time for the ace match.
As Tal'darim Altar was the map, at least one Zerg was sure to show. CJ sent out Effort, a player with much potential, but a 0-3 record in the Proleague at that point. STX, without a particularly strong Zerg, chose Bogus as their champion. Seeing as no other race had ever beaten Zerg on Tal'darim Altar, Bogus chose to employ a proxy 2-rax looking for an easy victory. Things looked great for Bogus as his proxy remained unscouted and his opponent went for an especially late pool. But just as Bogus looked like he was about to secure the win, he overextended, letting a pack of lings run-by to kill all of his SCVs at home. Bogus might be a great player, but he let his hubris get in the way of an easy victory for his team.

EG-Liquid is slowly learning the ropes of Proleague. From their opening 0-4 embarrassment against KT Rolster, to their nail-bitingly close 3-4 loss against CJ Entus, to their complete sweep of Samsung Khan, it's starting to look a lot better for the first foreigner team in Proleague.
Roro seems to be particularly weak to EG-TL Zergs; after being soundly defeated by Idra at WCS Grand Finals, he suffered another big loss to Zenio today in a fairly standard game. Meanwhile, JYP was able to hide a probe in Stork's base, so he abandoned his original plans and took the opportunity to four gate to victory. Hero just simply outclassed Reality and showed that he was the much better player in their match. And Shine continued to prove that he simply cannot win games, getting outplayed by Jaedong at the Tyrant's best match-up. This loss would bring Shine to a 0-4 record and his team to a 0-3.
As much of a great result it was for EG-TL, the bigger story is how Samsung Khan has been floundering so far this season. The second place finishers from hybrid proleague have looked sloppy and unfocused throughout all their games and it's truly the whole team's fault here. Not one player has really stepped it up at all and everyone has been looking either mediocre or just bleh, a trend Samsung will have to fix quickly if they wish to vie for a playoff spot.
Week 2 Standings
Featured Game: ThorZaIN vs. SongDuri
by T.O.P.
Our second spotlighted match features the foreigner fan favorite EG.Thorzain.RC taking on CJ’s SongDuri. The previous proleague season used Blizzard ladder maps, a decision made to ease the transition to SC2 for the Kespa progamers. However, many of those maps have been completely figured out because of how long they’ve been used in tournaments. Kespa has a tradition of introducing new maps that require players to create new styles for optimal play. Our featured game takes place on one such map, Arkanoid
Out of the Ordinary: Arkanoid
![[image loading]](/staff/monk/strategy_writeup/PL_S1R1W2/Arkanoid.jpg)
Got Rocks?
The rocks found abundantly on this map form a barrier between the two players, preventing any kinds of early game aggression. In total, four layers of rocks separate the two players. A timer is placed on the rocks so they self-destruct by the twenty minute mark. A neutral Zerg "tumor" blocks both the 2nd and the 3rd expansion for Terran and Protoss, preventing extremely greedy openings such as triple nexus before gateway. Nevertheless, the games so far have shown economically focused play in the early game, due to the protection provided by the rocks.
Early reviews of the map suggest that it is Terran favored. During the first week of proleague, 7 Terrans, 1 Zerg, and 0 Protoss were sent out to play on Arkanoid. You'll rarely see a Protoss here, as unlike Zergs, who can expand just fine, and Terrans, who can build an early command center and re-position it, Protoss have no real ways to either take early expansions or threaten their opponents with attacks.
The map structure found here also lends itself to fast three base play. Acquiring a fourth base is cumbersome, because a player must open many new paths before this is possible. Defending that base if even more difficult as it requires the player to defend a much larger area than his three natural bases. As such, in all of the games on Arkanoid so far, players have been reluctant to take a fourth base, a feature that favors Terrans in the TvZ match-up as Terrans can typically muster stronger 3-base armies.
The Opening: To the Skies!
This game started with SongDuri opting for the standard ZvT 3 Hatch queen build order, which happens to be one of the few options on this map as the rocks prevent any early game aggression. For Thorzain, we saw him open with a reaper expand, giving him early information on SongDuri's location. He then opted to go for 3 fast command centers, and tried to transition into two starport banshees. This economic-focused build combined greed along with early game scouting.
![[image loading]](/staff/monk/strategy_writeup/PL_S1R1W2/SongDuriThorzain1.jpg)
Peekaboo!
Unfortunately for Thorzain, SongDuri scouted one of the two starports. Noticing this, ThorZaIN decided to assume the worst and play as if both starports had been scouted. 2-port banshee not being the best strategy when revealed, Thorzain opted for plan B, producing one banshee and one viking from his two starports in order to harass his opponent's workers and deny his opponent's overlords respectively. The lone banshee proved its worth as it was able to deny SongDuri from breaking down the rocks until he had sufficient anti-air. In the meanwhile, SongDuri teched up to lair and mutalisks, a popular choice considering the semi-island nature of the map.
![[image loading]](/staff/monk/strategy_writeup/PL_S1R1W2/SongDuriThorzain2.jpg)
Zerg shall not pass!
Mid Game: Rush to the Center
As mutalisks arrived on the field, Thorzain rushed to position himself up in the center of the map, the best possible spot to deal with a muta/ling player. The wide open center on Arkanoid allows the Zerg to make use of mutalisks, zerglings, and banelings to flank with ease. But by moving into the center and establishing his position first, Thorzain prevented this situation from happening so easily. Any attempts from the Zerg to attack a fortified Terran position in the center will have to pass through a narrow choke, a meat grinder for zerglings and banelings against tanks.
![[image loading]](/staff/monk/strategy_writeup/PL_S1R1W2/SongDuriThorzain4.jpg)
Controlling the center is even more important here than in Chess.
At 14 minutes into the game, Thorzain seemed to be in a very advantageous position. Although both players were hovering around 170 supply, Thorzain had the choke of the Zerg player covered with a heavily upgraded marine-tank army against the pure mutalisk-ling/bane army of SongDuri. At this point, SongDuri did not even have his infestation pit up for hive against Thorzain's three factories that were constantly producing tanks.
End Game: The Battle for the Rocks
Throughout the entire game, Thorzain and SongDuri would be engaged in a war for the rocks. SongDuri needed the rocks to fall, creating more pathways for Zerg counterattacks, flanks, and run-bys. On the other hand, Thorzain wished to keep the rocks intact, limiting Zerg movement and creating chokes and dead-ends for the Zerg. This war began with Thorzain's first banshee that tried to deny SongDuri's initial zerglings from killing rocks and ended when Thorzain made a crucial mistake.
After losing drop after drop and marine force after marine force without accomplishing much, Thorzain's pressure subsided for a brief moment. Thus, SongDuri's army caught a break and started working to carve an alternate path to Thorzain's main base, completely bypassing Thorzain's main force. Though Thorzain had vision of his precious rocks being broken, he did not notice them being torn down on his minimap.
![[image loading]](/staff/monk/strategy_writeup/PL_S1R1W2/SongDuriThorzain6.jpg)
Pay attention!
![[image loading]](/staff/monk/strategy_writeup/PL_S1R1W2/SongDuriThorzain5.jpg)
Too late
From the layout of his base, it appeared that Thorzain had not even considered this kind of counterattack a possibility. Normally, especially against the base trade styles of mutalisk ZvT, a Terran wants some sort of base defense ready for possible zergling and mutalisk counter-attacks. A supply depot wall is one of the most crucial things to have against this style of Zerg, but Thorzain neglected to construct one; instead he scattered them all around his base as if they were a nuisance. This counterattack by SongDuri would wreak havoc in Thorzain's base, eventually bringing him down to only 11 workers. And when Thorzain rushed for a desperate all-in attack, SongDuri had more than enough time to fly his mutalisks back to defend his own main base. It was safe to say that this game was effectively over.
For a strategy that hinged so much abusing the map and keeping key rocks intact, Thorzain did a poor job of crossing all his t's and dotting all his i's. Had Thorzain been aware that the rocks near his base were being broken, he could have easily prevented it with a handful of marines and medivacs. The slight moment of inattentiveness essentially led to Thorzain's downfall, which came especially quickly due to Thorzain's lack of a depot wall.
Thorzain clearly had a well thought-out plan for this specific game on this specific map. He tried to keep the map intact, preventing his opponent from molding it to his fancy. However, he seemed to lose sight of his most important goals and his execution of the strategy was less than stellar. But one bright point we can take away from this game is that EG-TL is learning to adapt to proleague. They've begun to heavily engineer well thought-out strategies for specific maps, possible because of proleague lineups are revealed days in advance. As EG-TL moves forward, it seems like there's hope for them yet.

The first match of the week is between the #1 and #2 teams of the early season, with CJ (3 – 0) going up against SKT (2 – 1). The difference between the two teams is that of an ace match, with CJ winning theirs against EG-TL last week, while SKT's soO lost to Woongjin's Soulkey. The line-ups don't seem to favor any side in particular, and key players Rain, Fantasy, soO, Bbyong, and hero[join] have all managed to evade each other. This match might come down to the first ever ace match on Arkanoid, a map that's still in the process of being figured out.

Last place Samsung (0 – 3) will look to get their first win of the season against 3rd place KT Rolster (2 – 1), and from the looks of things, they might very well get it done. The normal rosters don't really lean towards either side, with aces Flash and Roro drawing relatively easier opponents and the rest of the line-ups seemingly matching up evenly. However, the ace match is Tal'Darim Altar, and in the Zerg department, you have to like Samsung's RorO a little better than anyone KT Rolster could draw from (Action, Crazy-Hydra, or Hoejja). RorO's ZvZ might not be his best, but he's still one of the best Zergs on a KeSPA team, and he would be favored in such a match.

![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/teams/icons/6.png)
EG-TL finally got their first win with a foreigner-free roster, and if Koreans are the recipe to Proleague success, they might repeat here as they're fielding the same line-up that defeated Samsung. Woongjin's roster is definitely weaker top to bottom, but they've drawn okay line-up that help alleviate the pain a little. Getting HerO in a PvP is a big gain, and so far, no team has gambled with a non-Zerg on Tal'Darim and won yet.
Should it go so far, the likely ace match would be TaeJa against Soulkey - TaeJa liking Antiga as with most Terrans, and Woongjin having deployed Soulkey on Antiga several times already.

![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/teams/icons/5.png)
After their entire roster minus-Jaehoon was held winless last week, Team Eight will surely be more determined than ever to prove their mettle. Captain Jaehoon even seems to be taking one for the team, taking on STX ace Innovation, allowing the rest of the line-up to draw more beatable opponents. While the weight of the rosters favors STX heavily, hopefully, the desire to overcome last week's humiliation will help Team Eight keep this one close. Baby, in particular, will have to pick his game up. While he's one of the few KeSPA players in the next Code S season, he hasn't brought that level of play to Proleague thus far, winning just a single match.

Fantasy Spotlight: Week 2
by monk.
The Big Winners
![Protoss (P)](https://tl.net/tlpd/images/Picon_small.png)
Though CJ's herO flopped in the WCS Grand Finals, he comes back to Proleague with a vengeance, winning all four of his matches so far, including an ace match this week against EG-TL ace, Taeja. For fans who followed hybrid proleague, this is not much of a surprise, as hero[jOin] had previously led his team, CJ, to a championship after beating both Rain and soo in ace matches in the playoffs.
![Zerg (Z)](https://tl.net/tlpd/images/Zicon_small.png)
And though herO[jOin] is the most valuable player at the end of the week, it was Soulkey who gained the most this week. Although Soulkey had a rocky start in week one, losing his first match, he bounced back quite well this week, winning both his regularly scheduled matches and even an ace match against soo on Zerg'darim Altar. Soulkey was rumored to the best SC2 player coming from Kespa when Kespa first switched, and he certainly lived up to that reputation this week.
![Zerg (Z)](https://tl.net/tlpd/images/Zicon_small.png)
![Terran (T)](https://tl.net/tlpd/images/Ticon_small.png)
![Zerg (Z)](https://tl.net/tlpd/images/Zicon_small.png)
These three players are proof that players costing 1 point aren't just dead weight. Each of these relatively inexperienced players were sent out to play this week, and lo and behold, they actually all won their matches. As a reward, their owners were gifted five points each. With a 1:5 cost to points ratio, these bargains are now the most cost-efficient players to have in the league.
The Big Losers
Retired PlayersThe switch from BW to SC2 has been a bumpy one and it was expected that we would lose some brave men along the way. Last week, it was announced that

Benched Players
Many players valued quite highly at the beginning of the round, but this week, some of them didn't even bother to show! Though they all scored points because their teams won at least one match each, none really earned their point potential by sitting on the bench. The following are players who failed to appear in this week's lineup and might be good choices on your anti-team.

The Current #1 Team
Congratulations to spelhus, our current first place holder in FPL. I chatted with spelhus to find out how he put together his championship-contender proleague team. Perhaps his thoughts will give some insight on how to pick a team for Round 2.![[image loading]](/staff/monk/fantasy_proleague/FPL_S1R1W2.jpg)
spelhus wrote:
sHy: This Proleague is a new beginning, with a new team, and even a new game and so no one really knows how consistent the players really are or will be in the long run. This is why, if we're honest, at the start of the season, the player values merely correlated with the size of their fanclubs here at Team Liquid. With that in mind when I picked the players for my team, I always tried not to judge the players by their recent results or other factors that might brought them public attention but on my own personal impressions I got while see them play. Therefore I chose sHy to be my captain. He absolutely impressed me in a game against Marineking in GSL where he was able to conjure the most magnificent blink stalker play possible. Even though he overextended badly and lost in the end I fell in love with him that night.
herO[jOin]: He is like the Plo-Koon of SC 2. He never gets much attention. Nevertheless in a straightforward lightsaber battle he will take down anyone except of maybe Yoda and the Emperor himself.
Bbyong: In my opinion, he is a well rounded above average Terran with no greater flaws against all races. Easy pick because he came surprisingly cheap.
Wooki: The new Stats for me. With everyone focusing so much on Flash throughout the season, many will fall to the well calculated builds of his right-hand man.
ZerO: The Zerg Prince is the only big fish from BW in my team. As a long term Stars fan, I have to admit that I was a bit biased here. But what I saw from him in SC2 until now, he looked quite promising and I am confident that he will be able to fully transfer his enormous skill into the new game.
yeOngJae: Another risky pick is this relatively unknown but promising Terran. With the help of both Fantasy and his coach Boxer. I hope he will do well and continue to be appointed to SKT's line-up in the future.
Woongjin Stars: In Soulkey, Shy, Zero and Flying, they field some of the finest players with an endless pool of skill and talent. Beyond that, despite the rumors of financial problems, the core of the team knows each other and have played together for a very long time and a superior team spirit will give them an important edge.
Antiteam: For my Anti-team, I kind of reversed the strategy of my main team.
HuK and
Stephano due to their lack of professional training both seem to belong to the weaker players in the league. Stephano isn't even in Korea if I'm not mistaken. But of course they are foreigners and do receive a lot of hype just for that fact. My last pick
Classic is still in there because he had to play against Fantasy, Stork and herO in a row, but I guess I will try to trade him very soon.
