Introduction:

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch or kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking. If the mafia at any time outnumber or equal the townspeople, they win. The town's goal is to lynch all the members of the mafia.

The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game. If you do not have the time or patience to read the whole thread, do not play. I will not compensate for ignorance.

Rules:

Cheating:
Cheating includes (but is not limited to):
1. Posting after death. You may have one polite goodbye post, but it may not contain any potentially game-changing information.
2. Ruining the game by doing something like hand out your mafia's member list to the town.
3. Logging on to someone else's account to get their role or looking over someone's shoulder to get their role.
4. Comparing role PM times to determine roles.
5. Posting screenshots of your inbox.
6. Posting or sharing any PM you receive from a host.
7. Getting yourself modkilled to help your team. Your non-majority-decided death may not be used as a bargaining chip.
8. Signing up more than once using smurf accounts.
9. Betting items outside of the game in exchange for in-game benefits.
10. Sharing accounts with other players. Only you may post on your account.
Cheating is not tolerated here. The punishment will be severe.

Mod Font:
This is mod font. It is reserved for moderators. Please do not use it.

Question Font:
This is question font. Use it to ask the moderators questions about the rules. Please do us a favor and read the rules before you ask anything.

Activity:
You must post in this thread once per day/night cycle and vote every day while you are alive. If you fail to do so, you will be modkilled.

Smurfs:
PM me if you want to smurf in this game.

Spam:
Spam is not tolerated, nor is any off-topic material. Do not discuss Proleague here. Do not talk about Starcraft II here. you may talk about ponies here (and if you spoil season 3 content you will be instantly modkilled) Play Mafia here.

Editing:
Editing is not allowed for any reason. Editing will result in a warning. After that, you will be modkilled. This is the one part of the site where it is okay to be double posting, even triple-posting. While I ask for everybody to post as concisely as possible, post again if you have to edit anything.

Inappropriate posts:
If you want to post something insulting or inappropriate and know the TL mods would have a problem with it elsewhere, don't post it here. If you do, a host will warn you or modkill you and request that you be banned from future games. The hosts have the final say on what is inappropriate. If you do not like how someone is talking to you, please PM Me before involving the TL staff. If you are unsatisfied with how the situation is resolved, then you can appeal to the TL staff normally, after the game has ended. There will be NO flaming, at all. Friendship is magic and all that.

Reporting posts:
The report button is a nice feature for regular TL, but not for this forum. We prefer to deal with things in house if possible to avoid confusion among the TL staff. If you have a problem with how someone is posting, talk to me. Please do not use your report button for anything during the game, PM me instead

Ban discussions:
Please wait until this game is over to talk about modkills and bans resulting from this game.

Play to win.
This means you play your best to help your team win while you are alive and in the game. However, this does not mean that you should try to win by being a jerk to the other players so they all want to quit playing.

This also means that you cannot leave the game without a good reason without a ban. These situations will be dealt with on a case by case basis. PM your host if you need to leave the game.

Out of thread communication:

It is common for mafia (and town circles if PMs are allowed) to use a medium outside of TL such as QuickTopics or IRC to communicate during the game. Because of the nature of this game, I ask that you refrain from attempting to hack these private circles. Even though it isn't against the rules it is against the intent and nature of the game. Conversely I ask those with access to private circles to not use them to abuse cyphers.

Voting rules:

1. Voting is done in a separate thread. Please keep votes there, and only vote there. Do not PM me your vote.
2. Please vote in the following format: ##Vote: GMarshal. Votes not done in the correct fashion will not be counted. I will update vote counts whenever I get the chance.
3. No conditional voting.
4. You may vote for yourself. You may not vote for anyone dead or outside the game.
5. This game uses Extended Majority Lynch. That is, at the deadline the player with a majority of votes is lynched (majority = 1/2 the remaining players, rounded down + 1), if no one has a majority then no lynch will take place.
6. Voting is mandatory. You may NOT abstain. You MAY vote for a no lynch by posting ##Vote: No Lynch

Signups:

This game is open to anyone with at least one completed game, but we are using Wisdom of the Crowds, see the signups post for details. Signups will remain open until all 30 spots have been filled

Game-specific rules:

Modkills:
This game follows the TL Mafia Ban List. If you are modkilled, your punishment will go beyond being eliminated from this game. Please refer to it for questions about your punishment. If you want to use this game to sit out your ban, please PM Flamewheel or post in the Ban List.

Replacements
This game uses replacements. Replacements will be made in the game until I run out/decide I don't need them anymore. If a player is modkilled during the designated time, then they will be replaced by a player on the replacement list.

Clues:
There are NO clues. There *are* setup related hints in the night/day posts.

PMs
PMs are NOT allowed in this game.

Time Cycle:
This game will follow a 24 hour night/48 hour day cycle. In case I am not able to post around deadline, any votes after the 48 hour mark will not count and the game will be put on halt until the night post is up. Currently the deadline is 02:00 GMT (+00:00), but that is subject to change. Actions/votes will be accepted up to and including the posted time, but not after. Remember, only votes up to the deadline will be counted, that is a vote at 01:59 GMT (+00:00) will be counted, one at 02:00 GMT (+00:00) will not

Setup Information

This game has a closed setup. That is, the numbers and nature of roles is unknown.

The following information *is* known:

There is only one mafia faction
There may or may not be third party ponies.
This game uses items
This game uses events
Town wincondition is as follows: The town wins when no more ponies with conflicting winconditions remain and at least one town aligned pony remains alive.
Mafia wincondition is as follows: The mafia wins when all other factions are dead, except those explicitly noted to be able to win with the mafia.
Any pony that has appeared in the show (and some non-pony creatures) may appear in the game
Role name is NOT reflective of alignment, that is, Nightmare Moon may be Good, and Fluttershy may be Evil.

Item Rules
Items may be traded at any point during the day or night, but the trade will only resolve at the night or day post, *after* all other actions have finished, including nightkills and lynches. If someone holding an item is killed, the killer receives the item. If a person is lynched, the item is rnged among the people on his lynch wagon. Some items are destroyed upon the owners death. Roleblocking impedes item usage.

Event Rules
Events are special mod posts that may occur during the day or night. They may be preset by the game or triggered by certain roles, abilities or items. These events can alter anything, from how the lynch works to night actions, and may force certain actions from the players in response. There may not be more than one event per day and no more than one event per night.

If you have a favorite pony, you may PM me and request it. I will *try* to accommodate you, if the role is in the game. No guarantees.

You do NOT have to have watched the show to play, nor will any game mechanics depend on you having watched the show

Read this section

A few GMarshal specific tidbits

1.) Play nice. This is a pony game. I expect friendship and magic, and will be unhappy if we get flaming and anger instead.

2.) Don't spam. This isn't IRC, try to consolidate your posts, its horrible when pages 20-80 are all one line posts between two players yelling at each other

3.) Activity. Yes, the guideline is one post per cycle and a vote, but I'll be disappoined if that is the most you do. I do keep track of activity levels, so if you are really inactive I'll make sure you don't get invited to any of my future invitationals, or get preference in signups. Too inactive and I might blacklist you altogether.

4.) Memes and Gifs. Zero tolerance pretty much, as in elsewhere on tl, I will not allow them. Pictures that are not memes are generally ok. No memes (u mad?) or stupid gifs or meme based image macros. Its stupid and belongs on 4chan. Pony images are allowed.

5.) Every single role has custom fluff, it is perfectly ok to claim this fluff, but beware, there are countermeasures in place to stop a mass claim from being optimal.

6.) You may claim your role in full if you so desire, with all the attached fluff, and there will be no consequences, you do not have to paraphrase it. You may not include the time when you received it or from whom.

7.) Have fun. This is a game, the point is to enjoy yourself, so by all means, roleplay to your hearts content, lynch mafia, kill townies, chat, enjoy yourselves there is no point in stressing out over a game.
