Round 5 Recap

Odds And Ends

Haters Gonna Hate

Shame Corner

Round 6 Week 1 Previews

I don't think Milkis saw it coming. No one saw it coming.

It looked like a professional job: just one bullet, the sound of tires burning against the asphalt and a car going around a corner. Milkis' body was laying still against the pavement. Spica came close and kicked his unconscious body, but got no response.

It was grim times at the TLHQ. It's one of those moments where everyone wants to say everything, but no one says anything. "Show must go on" they say, and that's was our reaction. Nazgul was at the head of the table when he said: "We must write that SPL Round 5 Week 5 news post. It's what Milkis would have wanted us to do."

There was a brief moment of silence, no one felt like taking his place in such a moment. Eventually we started looking at each other. I gained courage and stood up. "I will do it. I will do it for ESPORTS"

When thinking of how to fill the hole Milkis left, I thought what happens when an artist dies. Usually what they do is: they take the last thing he was working on, complete what's left undone and release it. It felt right. So I went through Milkis' papers to find what he had been working on, took some liberties and here's what came out:

At last, it's been more than a month since the last Odds and Ends edition! Frankly, my job is a bit... superfluous when there's no events or live matches going on in the Korean BW scene, but thankfully, things have actually *gasp* happened this time! Now, some events were already sniped by some bored people in the threads while we were all suffering from BW withdrawal, so they have been already covered. And yes, every time an event is sniped by another, I fume inside and shake an angry fist at the screen. The same goes for SKT interviews, but I digress. Anyway, without further ado, what have the progamers been up to besides practicing for matches all day long?

KT Rolster, helping out Korea's youth!

Future Yellow fanboy spotted!

KT Rolster's (T)Flash, (P)Reach, and (Z)YellOw participated in the "Let's Expand Your Dream Together with KT Rolster" event on the 24th, giving back to society and helping out Korea's youth! KT is a sponsor of the Seoul u-Running project, a program aimed at low-income children to help improve their literary ability and build character. The 3 star players of KT had various activities with the kids at the Seoul Seodaemun-gu Salvation Army Children's Welfare Center, such as playing Starcraft together, an autograph event, players' goods donations event, and a open-hearted talk with the players event, which helped the children gain more self-confidence. It's amazing how Starcraft and eSports can even help the youth, isn't it? But the 3 players also had to go through some trials while dealing with hyper little kids! For pics of the event, click here!
  • (P)Reach and (Z)YellOw played a 2v2 game, with Yellow playing as Terran and Reach with his main race as Protoss on the same team against 2 students. The 2 students, realizing that they were getting smashed against progamers, cried for a handicap, and Reach and Yellow had to go through punishment games while the 2 students played on. Reach had to kick a hackey sack 10 times and Yellow had to take 100 steps with a pedometer, much to the little kids in the audience's delight. But even while the 2 players were humiliating themselves, the 2 students still couldn't make a comeback. However, while Reach was playing his punishment game and kicking his hackey sack, Yellow with his classic troll grin on his face suddenly decided to turn against his teammate and destroyed all of Reach's army, resulting in a team kill. The audience roared with laughter as Reach slowly realized that he had just been trolled by Yellow. Yellow stated, "The punishment game was easier than I thought it would be. It's been a long time since I played with little kids, and it was really fun; by participating often in these kind of events, I will do my best to contribute more to society in the future."

  • (T)Flash played a 1v3 match on Hunters against 3 students, offracing as Protoss. As one would expect from the Ultimate Weapon, he completely annihilated his opponents, playing Protoss as if he was still playing his main race as Terran and displaying perfect macro, which drew awe and admiration from his audience. Flash had a defense-oriented play and went forge before Gateway, setting up a defense with cannons and preparing for the first attack. He sent his Dark Templars to 9 o'clock and 5 o'clock, surprising his unsuspecting Protoss opponents and demolishing their workers. Flash also had a hidden expansion at the 1 o'clock position, resulting in a booming economy while his opponents struggled to catch up with late tech. Even while Flash had to spin around 10 times, throw his slipper up in the air, and then catch it for a handicap punishment game, his opponents still could not turn the tables. Flash then gathered a Dragoon army and ended the game by defeating his last remaining Zerg opponent. Flash said, "I worried a lot since it was a 1v3 game, but thankfully I was able to defend against my opponents' attacks and win. It was really fun spending time with the children, and it would be great if I could participate in these kind of events more often in the future." So yes, even if you make Flash offrace, do something else for a couple of minutes, or even play against little kids, he'll still beat you mercilessly into a pulp. I guess all we can do is keep on shaking our heads and continue to go, "That Flash, he's just disgustingly too good."
    CJ Entus goes racing!

CJ Entus went to go watch a racing tournament and support their company's racing team on the 28th at Gangwon-do Taebaek Racing Park. (Z)Hydra, (T)Leta, (P)Horang2, (P)Movie, (T)sKyHigh, (P)Snow, (Z)EffOrt, Coach (Z)KIMDONGWOO, along with the coaching staff and more than 30 CJ Entus fans went to go watch the race together. The players were completely immersed in watching the race and enjoyed their day off at the race. CJ Entus's players said, "We weren't bored at all, and felt admiration towards the CJ [racing team] group members' terrific skill." CJ Entus then did an autograph session with the fans after the race was over. It must have been a progamer's dream come true: Cars, racing queens and adoring fangirls! For more pics of the racing event, click here, and to ogle at the racing queens, click here!

  • But hey, any news of (Z)EffOrt recently? Coach (Z)KIMDONGWOO tempts fans of Effort's comeback with the words, "Well if we use Effort and get assistance from him, then there wouldn't be a problem with taking back 1st place..." Coach KIMDONGWOO expressed his intentions, "I want to show Effort's skill again, but the conditions aren't right yet, so I have a lot of anxiety and impatience burning inside me."

It has been 2 months since Effort announced his comeback to the progaming scene, but now, Coach KIMDONGWOO says that Effort is currently standing at the top in the CJ house at in-house tournaments. Even the CJ players remarked, "When he plays against other team's Zergs in Proleague, he wins far more easily than anyone else," and said that Effort is now displaying skill that surpasses his skill during his prime. However, due to Kespa's regulations, Effort cannot return this 10-11 Proleague season and show off his new skill. Coach KIMDONGWOO said, "Even though he cannot appear this season, we will use Effort and trained CJ players to show an even better performance in Proleague and the MSL in the future." Effort and CJ Entus fanboys, you may scream like little girls in excitement now. CJ is looking to be very, very stacked next Proleague season.

Effort: "You think my heyday's over? Ladies and gents, we're just getting started here! Haters gonna hate when they see me put the pedal to the metal next season."

Miscellaneous Events
  • Hwaseung went mountain climbing on the 27th, and climbed Gwanak Mountain in Gwanak-gu, Seoul. The whole team went there as a workshop during the interval break before Round 6 to build teamwork and have a good time after a hard, tiring Round 5. Manager Han Sang Yong said, "Leaving for a far distant workshop fit our schedule and could influence our preparation for Round 6, so I chose climbing Gwanak Mountain for our workshop. After conquesting Gwanak Mountain and climbing to the summit, we will receive strength and display it in Round 6." For pictures of Hwaseung's mountain trip, click here!

  • SK Telecom T1 has opened a Twitter account! You can follow them over at http://twitter.com/#!/sktelecom_t1! SKT is also holding a raffle for their Twitter followers from 6/4 to 6/24 to win prizes such as Kraze Burger gift certificates, Adidas T-shirts, and Adidas shoes. Unfortunately, I believe that you need to live in Korea to receive the prizes... but SKT hopes that their fans will come support them at Twitter! Their first tweet says: "T1 fans, T1's Twitter is finally OPEN! It's a pleasure to meet all of you. ^_^ We will do our best to report various T1 news in real time from now on. SK Telecom T1 progaming team hwaiting!" SKT is asking for a lot of love and support, as it's a necessary period of time for them in Round 6!
That's it for this edition of Odds and Ends! Be sure to tune in next time and anticipate more news!

Rankings before Round 6 begins

Tears.

That is what you had shed last weeks as the Proleague writeup team took a well needed break. Or maybe you were just an STX fan. I guess Hwaseung fans also have it bad (worse, some may argue), but at least they're not using Perfectman for their ace matches -- an act of desperation akin to using Bogus as your ace player. Well, at least Bogus (6-5) has a better winrate than Jaedong (4-5), as bogus as that may have sounded any other round.

Or maybe it was tears of happiness. This would have meant you were a CJ fan, as something as simple as the change in their name led them on a tear, dominating Hwaseung, STX, and even SKT with perfect 4-0 shut outs. Those could be tears of joy from a Woongjin fan, watching his team climb to the top 4. Or perhaps you were just a happy Brood War fan who is happy to see that the entire intellectual property debacle has finally been settled.

There were many reasons to shed tears these last three weeks. But whatever the reason, the fact that you have shed them represent one thing -- that you have passion. And we are here to bring good news! More is to come.

Even after 5 rounds every spot in the final ranking is to be disputed. Three teams rank at the top: T1, KT and CJ with very narrow margins, where a match can mean all difference. Below them six teams battle for a Playoff spot. And even though some of them are going through hard times (mainly WeMade, OZ and MBC) we know how fast things can change when Jaedong is in top shape, when WeMade doesn't make retarded ace decisions or how good MBC can perform when they don't sell Light.

Greetings, fellow Broodwar fans. The last round of PL is always a special time for me. Two years ago, around this time Heyoka and I started covering Proleague for TL. Today, TL carries on that tradition faithfully, bringing you Proleague updates week after week. Before we launch into a lengthy diatribe on why SKT owns your bones, let's pause for a moment to say thank you to the Broodwar writers who tirelessly carry forth this coverage arm. Thanks!

Anyway, while the rest of the world watches MLG Columbus this weekend, we're gathered here together to celebrate the inevitable. Another year, another season, another round of Proleague, with SK Telecom T1 still at the top. SK Telecom T1, at 30 - 15 in R5 and #1 in 4/5 PL rounds so far. SK Telecom T1, Winners League Champions. SK Telecom T1, defenders of all that is good and right in progaming.

You're probably sick of hearing about SKT, right? You're the biggest SKT antifan ever. You hate everything about those bandwaggoning fans of theirs, those kids who go into every thread yelling SKTTTTTT. Well, let me just pause for a moment to say LOL.

As the old adage goes, haters gonna hate. But don't hate us because we're the most successful progaming franchise in the world. Don't hate us because we created %50 of the bonjwas that ever graced a tileset. Don't even hate us because our frontmen of two eras look like underwear models. Hate us because, throughout this first decade of professional Starcraft, we have repeatedly pounded all of you, and I mean all of you to a pulp.

Hate us because we're going to do it again, in R6.

Haters gonna hate.

Battle Report:
(P)Jaehoon vs (Z)RorO

+ Show Spoiler +
The map is New Empire of the Sun. RorO spawns as the brown Zerg in the bottom right corner, while Jaehoon gets to play as the enigmatic yellow Protoss, spawning in the bottom left corner.

Now, any Protoss would open Nexus-Forge, or Forge-Nexus, right? Wrong. Jaehoon, in a never ending effort to change the PvX paradigm, opens with Gate-Forge-Cannon-Nexus, you will see why in a while. RorO opts for a classic 3 hatch, lair, spire into 5 hatch, oh little does he know.

Jaehoon, now is left with a bunch of Zealots and as soon as his leg upgrade finishes, he launches the infamous 8 minutes Zealot rush. RorO, having played past C level on iccup, blocks it with 2 sunkens and some lings.

Jaehoon tries a new attack at the 3rd hatch RorO placed at the 1 o'clock expansion. Meeting the same luck, he goes back to RorO's natural and attacks.

Jaehoon 1:0 Extractors

RorO delays the Enigma's third by placing a burrowed Zergling and by attacking a cannon being built to kill it, while taking another base. RorO is now on 4 bases with two sunken walls protecting them. But that ain't gonna stop our hero.

But our hero did get 4 zealots inside, pushing him further into victory.

FOX 3:1 MBC? try Jaehoon 2:0 Extractors.

From there it's kind of hard to explain what happens. Jaehoon goes from 2 to 4 bases, while dropping 4 DTs in RorO's 4th. With his air superiority he exchanges a couple of corsairs for a good number of overlords, which gives him reign over our Zerg victim.

Jaehoon has now 168 supply. RorO has 86. What good is having almost double the supply if 80% of your army can't attack because it's sitting behind a wall of stuck dragoons?

LOL dunno, im just sum protoss

After the unfortunate attack, Jaehoon macros against back to full supply and attacks again. This time he meets more Sunkens, more Lurkers but this time with Defiler support. You can guess the outcome.

Reavers join the setup at Roro's nat. Not attacking, just holding position. Suddenly Arbiters. I was ecstatic! Paradigm shift, here we go!!

Ok maybe not.

Jaehoon having 5 running bases (against RorO's four) feels he's too far ahead, so he walks around the map with his army while he waits for his opponent to be ready. A true gentleman.

RorO proceeds to doom drop the nat and the main. And Jaehoon counters with a recall. Because who cares if your base is being sieged by Lurkers and Zerlings. I made Arbiters and I'm going to recall him, and I'm going to recall him NOW.

From here on it's just nasty. Supplies even up, Jaehoon stocks 2000/2000 in the bank and loses both bases at 11 o'clock.

Exhibit A: the moment Jaehoon should have gg'd

Exhibit B: the moment Jaehoon actually gg'd

Spot the 10 differences.

If you’re at all like me (which I figure you are, since you are reading this at the moment), the last week with minimal amounts on Brood War was almost immeasurably painful. But after 5 rounds of differing formats, slumps, upsets, and even bans after those upsets (<3 (Z)Shine), the final sprint begins. Which will be the qualifying teams? With so many teams fighting for places 4-9, and the #1 spot even more highly prized than in previous rounds, we are bound to see some very tense efforts, and fanboy tears both of joy and of disappointment, for the road to the playoffs is still riddled with hardships... Here are the previews for the games next week, categorized by days, as I see them.

Saturday, 4th of June,
The day of Massacres.

[image loading]SK Telecom T1 vs STX SouL[image loading]
on OGN

The first massacre will take place on OGN, as the orange fist of SK Telecom pounds upon the weathered remains of STX SouL. Once in constant conflict for second place, SK Telecom has resoundingly revived (P)Bisu, and strengthened (P)BeSt and (T)Fantasy enough to be threats to every outside force again, even the TBLS (with the exception of ZvBest, dohsairs still exist in this universe). Their other forces look formidable as well, (P)By.Sun showing brilliant games here and then and the SKTZergs take turns being competent. How then could STX even dream of defeating such a beast? (Z)by.hero, (Z)Calm and (P)Kal are mere shadows of their former selves, (T)Hwasin has sunk into the abyss itself, and (T)Bogus resoundingly lost to (P)Bisu the last few times they met, if the paltry guard of STX should reach the Ace match. But when heroes are needed, they sometimes answer the call - (P)Shuttle and (Z)hyvaa are on the upturn again, and (T)Last and (Z)Modesty may channel the promise they've shown yet again to help out their team in this time of need. STX has even called in their (T)Final Ace, but it will likely still not be enough. SKT should win 4-1.

[image loading]Hwaseung OZ vs CJ Entus[image loading]
on MBCGame

The second massacre will take place on MBC. CJ Entus is the natural enemy of Hwaseung OZ, since one of them is Ace dependant and the other consists of players who are good enough to be Aces. This is evidenced by the successes of those teams in Winners League and Proleague. All games between the two in Proleague were won by CJ, whereas all games in Winners League were won by OZ. This is of course oversimplifying matters, but CJ as of now are completely imba, with (T)sKyHigh rebounding, (T)Leta in good form, (Z)Hydra in good form, (P)Horang2 in excellent form, (P)Movie in good form and players of the calibre of (P)Snow on the bench for not being good enough to send out... OZ will have it's work cut out for it. (P)sHy, (P)Dear and (P)Sky are slow to realize their potential as of now, (Z)Killer seems shaky and (T)HiyA feels the burden of OZ on his shoulders and fails to help overcome it. God help them if (Z)Jaedong should lose faith in himself and enter a slump, but the outcome of the MSL probably isn't helping matters. CJ should dominate 4-1, but I'm less sure of this one than the STX match. Also not helping: the final match being played on La Mancha and (T)Leta playing on CJ.

Sunday, 5th of June,
The day of Heroism.

[image loading]Woongjin Stars vs MBCGame HERO[image loading]
on OGN

The sun is shining brightly on the day when these teams meet... Well, in some part of the world, anyway. Nevertheless, the victors will have overcome considerable adversity, no matter the team. Stars not only overcame the slump of their starplayer (P)free, but also a noteriety for losing ace matches in the last rounds. (T)Light, (T)Really and (P)Flying on the lineup greatly aid with this sort of task, obviously, but team morale is hard to change, and in this, Stars has succeeded. Their team morale is one of winners, albeit not necessarily heroes. The underdogs and greater heroes (in my opinion) in this match are MBCGame HERO, who find themselves preservering in spite of all odds once more. With the departure of (T)Light, and possible close retirements of (P)Jaehoon and (Z)Saint, MBC still won 3 games of 9, used their rookies to pad out the lineup of which only 5 players had ELO scores, and clenched their teeth, determined to give it their all - no matter what. The Ace match on Alternative also plays into the hands of Stars, as (Z)ZerO is on fire lately, and Alternative is probably bad for TvZ, but I think we'll see MBC make this match difficult for them. A 4-2 win for Stars is likely, but a win by MBC would be a lot more impressive.

[image loading]KT Rolster vs Air Force ACE[image loading]
on MBCGame

The future is looking bleak for KT - (T)fOrGG gone, (P)Violet in therapy, (P)Tempest is playing badly, (Z)Action is shaky, (P)Stats is wildly alterating in form, the rookies largely wet behind the ears, and perhaps worst of all, (T)Flash's career is nearing it's untimely end in a yet unknown time period. But they still have this year, and they still look strong enough to take a match from anyone they damn well please, although this can also be said of their opponent. In the blue corner we find Air Force ACE, a seasoned team fully composed of veterans and have-beens, longing for some chance at glory. Truly, this season, ACE has shown results like never before, truly establishing itself as a major contender at one point, although the abysmal results in Winners League nullified all of the previous progress. Yet, they still march on, although they leaft a few questions in their wake at the end of Round 5. Questions like: What happened to (Z)ggaemo? Do (T)Iris and (T)firebathero really get outplayed by (T)PianO in practice to justify him being the Ace player? Will (T)Canata still suck on ACE? Regardless of these questions, I see a close and exciting match, KT winning 4-3, since Aztec is no longer a TvP graveyard.

Monday, 6th of June,
The day of Survival.

[image loading]WeMade FOX vs Hwaseung OZ[image loading]
on OGN

This day is the day of Survival, because the teams participating fight for the closely contested places 4-9, and defeat signals ever diminishing hopes for the team that fears being left at the doorstep of the Playoffs. WeMade FOX and Hwaseung OZ are the trailers, and both desperately need this win. WeMade looks to be the favorite, but looks might easily be deceptive. At the start of every round I keep thinking to myself that WeMade will start doing better. The interviews show them hopeful. Players show some new promise. And then... disappointment. (Z)Shine and (T)BaBy in particular seem to have dropped the ball, and (Z)RorO and (P)Pure are nowhere near as consistent as they were during last years playoffs. Hwaseung has its own problems, but I'm inclined to see this as a close 4-3 Hwaseung victory, especially if it gets to Ace Match on the Zerg-friendly map Alternative.

[image loading]STX SouL vs Samsung KHAN[image loading]
on MBCGame

Samsung should have been at the very top of the ladder this season, but (P)Stork, (P)JangBi and
(Z)great have become weaker while the rookies became promising one by one. The success stories of (T)TurN, (P)Brave, (P)Grape and (T)Reality, in that order could easily have dominated the Proleague. However, now Samsung finds itself in the middle of the pack, although at this moment, strong and full of momentum. It's a good time to meet rival STX, who will probably find Samsung a difficult, yet manageable opponent, if the strengths can be sufficiently utilized. (T)Reality vs. (P)Shuttle, (P)Stork vs. (Z)Calm, and (P)Grape vs. (T)Bogus could turn the tide towards STX, but KHAN is no opponent to be underestimated. Even if January makes very questionable choices in the lineup. For this reason, I predict a 4-3 STX upset, but this game can go so many ways. A 4-0 by KHAN wouldn't surprise me at all.

Tuesday, 7th of June,
The day of Polarity.

[image loading]SK Telecom T1 vs Woongjin Stars[image loading]
on OGN

Bam. Easily game of the Week. Woongjin Stars is on fire, it's Ace player in the finals of MSL, capable of beating anyone and anything. On the other side, the nigh-insufferablevulnerable SK Telecom T1, that has dominated the Proleague for almost the entirety of it's 5 round run. Look forward to
(Z)ZerO vs. (P)Bisu, (Z)Neo.G_Soulkey vs. (T)Fantasy, (T)Light vs. (P)BeSt, (P)free vs. (Z)s2 and (T)Really vs. (P)By.Sun. This should be a good day of BW, and any outcome is possible. I think a repeat of the last game, 4-3 Stars will occur, but the current monstrous form of (P)Bisu might make this wishful thinking rather than the truth.

[image loading]Air Force ACE vs CJ Entus[image loading]
on MBCGame

The match on MBC, on the other hand, looks weak in comparison. Although ACE has what it takes to take a game from anyone, CJ looks as if it is going to dominate most of round 6, if the core players play as they do. Keeping it short this time, I think this will be a 4-0 CJ steamroll.

Wednesday, 8th of June,
The day of Equals.

[image loading]Samsung KHAN vs KT Rolster[image loading]
on OGN

The week ends with games that promise to be great, and I think they won't disappoint. KHAN vs. KT will be a battle of equals in that we have rookies rising to the occasion, slightly sloppy performances from several of the main lineup, and two aces whose matches are almost always stuff of which BW fan dreams are made of. Although both teams suffer from inconsistency, I'm currently banking on this match to fulfill it's potential and be one of the best this week. Slightly edging for a 4-3 KT win here, but honestly, no idea.

[image loading]MBCGame HERO vs WeMade FOX[image loading]
on MBCGame

MBC vs. FOX is usually one of the least followed matchups of the PL, but at least I'm fairly certain it won't be one-sided, especially with a lot for both teams on the line here. I think it will come down to the Ace Match on La Mancha, and I think (T)Sea will make it 4-3 for MBC, because he's clutch, but it could also end up being one of (T)BaBy's lucky Rainbow Socks days, where he is close to unbeatable. Certainly hoping for a good close match, though.

Better late than never. All forces combined, Pony Tales team and PL coverage squad managed to once again save the day for the hardcore BW fans. This concludes this one-off PonyTales Proleague special. I hope you all enjoyed it. Hopefully Milkis will be back from the dead next week and take care of business. Until then, a big thank you goes to Spica, HawaiianPig, mustaju, riptide and flamewheel. As always Pony Tales are disciple, IntoTheWow and of course the one and only Lip the Pencilboy. Pony Tales 5 is just around the corner, so you have all the right reasons to get excited !
