Position: Starcraft 2 Writer (unpaid)
Hiring Period: Indefinite Number of Positions: Undetermined
Description
Have you read the front page lately? And I don't mean simply glancing at it before you go to click on one of the forums (those who have their landing pages set at /forum need not apply), I mean actually clicking on the articles and reading through them.
Maybe you really like some of our stuff, and some of it perhaps not as much. Same with us, mostly. Though we pride ourselves on our news, we're always trying to make it better. That's where you (might) come in.
We're looking for new SC II writers to cover the e-Sports scene. There's a ton of tournaments with a ton of games lately, and we're feeling rather undermanned. We're gonna need new writers to cover all of the major tournaments, cover them well, and do it in a TIMELY manner.
What kind of stuff do we need written?
Well first, there's the basic stuff. Short match reports, upcoming match previews, player profiles, etc. It's not the most interesting stuff in the world for most writers, but it's stuff that's gotta get done. We like to get those kinda things over with as efficiently as we can, so we can move onto cooler stuff.
Here's something that might interest those of you who cut their teeth with SC II: Starcraft 1 still has a deeper, richer scene. Don't believe me? Read any of the recent Proleague or MSL news posts, or check out the the Brood War forums. Sure, it may look like a bunch of obsessive fanboy-ism at first, but that's precisely the kind of interest and passion that drove Brood War on for over ten years.
Starcraft II is a younger game for sure, so there's not as much history to draw from. But even so, there are definitely some interesting characters, bitter rivalries, e-Sports drama and just tons of awesome stories waiting to be told. The intertwined fates of MKP vs MVP. The times and trials of NASL. Multiple, competing leagues worldwide. ThorZain vs MC becoming THE new standard for entertaining e-Sports matches.
These are things that need to be explored, analyzed, and written about, in only the way a truly passionate fan can. If you can do that, well, then we'll give the podium to you.
In short, we want writers, who will be asked to perform a simple task: Watch a league, tell us what happened, and then tell us why it was interesting.
Application process
Send an application containing the following to k.woo@teamliquid.net (WaxAngel)
- Your TeamLiquid ID and online messenger contact information (MSN, AIM, Gchat, etc).
- Three writing samples on the topic of SC II e-Sports. No minimum or maximum length on these, just be reasonable. Topics need only be vaguely related to e-Sports if they are interesting enough. Additional samples after the third will be ignored.
- The league or tournament you would prefer to cover.
- That is all. Do not send any resumes or things that were not asked for. For now, all we want to see is your writing.
* This position is unpaid ** Subscriptions will be provided for writers covering pay-to-watch leagues.

Cool stuff. TL's writing staff is so baller
|
I was wondering when the position may be closed to applications? Or will it be open until you have found what you are looking for?
|
I wish I had the free time to write. Would love to contribute. But alas, having a GF, Working Full time, Playing Tennis, and Starcraft on a daily basis leaves me with barely enough time to sleep lol.
Good luck finding people. I love reading what the TL writers have to say. They are always quality articles, and very well written.

I was hoping that cloning technology was far enough to produce perfect Hot_Bid clones, so they could write hundreds of articles each day.
Just as TLO said on TLAttack (at least how I remeber it ): 'I think it's just a good advice in general: to live your life always asking yourself 'What would Hot_bid do?' '
Anyways, looking forward to some cool stuff coming up

Open for an indefinite amount of time, until we are pleased with what we have. Pretty much what you said :o

ill apply to this, do the writing samples have to have been published somewhere or can we mock them up as and when in privacy?
|
I've been thinking of applying for this for a while now. I could crank out some sick articles.

I don't care where or what format they're in as long as I can read them.

Is there going to be some kind of salary?
|
For the writing samples, would something like a battle report or some sort of game summary suffice? Or are you looking for more prose-y stuff?

Hiring implies a salary, so might want to change the title.

It could be a non-material thing like respect. Or hugs from HotBid. Both of which can, at times, be priceless.

Hiring implies employment, which is what they're doing. Employment doesn't necessarily have salaries; just expectations, standards and work ethics.
(In reality, you work for compensation, the compensation doesn't have to be financial).
Edit: Oh and I'd be interested, but I don't feel I am adequate. Nonetheless, I remember reading about hiring more writers previously by another staff member. Was that request ever fulfilled or is this a continuation?
