Turn based game have a puzzle solving aspect that has for equivalence maneuvering. This statement was formulated for games which have a Race abstract goal... Starcraft does have one aspect of racing (macro), I dont see that aspect in chess clearly. Both game have this Overcome pattern. Which means that a game is won by a succession a smaller actions. This pattern is also present in fighting games. And Overcome is a source of tension, both game have at a higher level therefore part in common with tension. Starcraft can be more complicated but since it's not only a mind game, it has a more simple strategic level. ooooh im gonna talk about this one hour and noone will bother reading it anyway so tell me if you want more of game designer point of view...........

I like sc better than chess btw, sc is more spectacular, and I love the nice fantasy world that comes with it, great stuff.

Well, I have to admit, today I've just played a blitz team tournament, I've only played starcraft for 6 years and chess for 16 years, with no luck at any of them. For those non-initated, a blitz game is played usually in 9-10 minutes, with no chance of being it longer because the clock just doesn't waits for you. 10 minutes is the longest game in 5-5, no matter if you play 10 moves or play 200. Just 5 minutes per player. There's something interesting: I get mad when I lose to starcraft and I try to improve from every defeat on chess. Today I've had 50%, and it tastes me good since I've played a category that doesn't match me. And after the tournament, we all have been to a restaurant without any kind of dislikes because somebody just beated the other. We haven't won, but we were as happy as the winner, just because we liked this day. I can't say this from starcraft, I've seen some loosers getting really angry, and maybe the didn't screw that night just because they lost a game, and that's something it happens to me in sc. I find more like an sport where people go to have fun in chess than in starcraft. Maybe it's because I usually don't play, I watch replays and VOD's as if was watching soccer. Another point is that chess has at least 500 years of history. Do you really expect to see any starcraft game at year 2500? But chess will survive forever. And this makes chess a game above starcraft for a thousand miles at least. That's just a personal oppinion, don't flame me because I'm in a starcraft forum but I like chess most.

my only problem with chess is that it's been around for so damn long, that like I think it was "Jim" mentioned in that recent chess tournament thread, most of being good at chess is knowing the "theory", and correct moves to play. It's unavoidable naturally, but it's also sorta lame to have (at least the beginning-middle) so played out already. That was sort of an incoherent paragraph, maybe somebody will get what i'm trying to say and describe it better.
