The major "skill" is focus and ability to remember multiple variations of future possible positions at the same time. At the highest levels of both games I would imagine all players know just about all the strats and it turns into a guessing game and skill vs skill.

Also, an artificial intelligence could be made to compete well with a Starcraft progamer if it would be profitable to the creater of the AI. An okay AI was already made by a few people who didn't profit (http://entropyzero.org/broodwarai.html). Just think if Microsoft took on the project =O

In chess you always see what your opponent is doing, yet you can still be out "strategized", not sure what your opponent is doing, and not be sure which is the best path to take at any given point. SCs strategic depth is no where close to chess'.

starcraft may in theory be more complex than chess, but the fact is that I don't think a human could ever beat a decently programmed AI from the sheer fact that the "mechanics" the computer would be capable of would be so far in excess of any human capacity. The reason no SC Ai is any good at the moment is that nobody has bothered to alter the way Blizzard's AI handles units and abilities (which is hard-coded). If this was opened up for modification, computers, while still perhaps dumb, could have a level of unit control that would leave any progamer FAR in the dust
