I was using my D830 Laptop today. There was no sign of a problem. I had been having problems before, but I sent it in to Dell and they replaced the motherboard just a few months ago. Ever since then I was especially careful with my laptop because my warranty had run out.
I played a game of SC2 then pressed the start button to put it in sleep mode. A couple of hours later, I came back and pressed the start button. The screen which came up was black. The HUD lights turn on; the HD light flashes if I leave it on long enough, the battery light turns on, the wifi turns on, however the screen remains black. If I leave the computer on for a while, the caps lock light will turn on. However, tapping caps lock does not toggle it.
If I press the power button quickly after I turn it on, it shuts down violently -- that is it turns off with the same shocking sound that occurs when you try to remove your battery when your laptop is on. If I wait a while, then press the button, it turns off gently, like normal.
There is no sound. Tapping f8 or function or function f5 does nothing. I have tried removing the battery, holding the power button, then putting back in the battery and trying to turn it on.
Any advice? Keep in mind that I am not very experienced with computers, and don't know the lingo.

I'm having this problem too, and I'm not sure why. My guess is that it's a driver issue, but even if that's correct I have no idea how to fix it
EDIT: I can also say for sure that it's not computer specific, since my laptop is a Lenovo. Running Win7 x64.

Dont leave your computer on for long periods of time, Sleep mode is a horrible feature that was invented by the devil. You should restart your computer atleast once a day. And never leave it on over night if its not doing anything.
ESPECIALLY for laptops, laptops are very fragile, leaving one on for a long period of time is asking for it. Get in the routine of shutting down, instead of putting computer to sleep.
I know this wont fix your issue but it might help keep your computers alive in the future.
as to your issue, I know there is some thing with dell laptops where if you accidently pressed the button, the video card is in export mode, where is waiting for a monitor to be plugged in instead of using the laptop screen, I cant remember the specific button, but my sisters laptop was having this issue and I had to press like the Fn key plus like f12 or something and the screen turned right on.
if you have a monitor, plugging in the monitor to your computer may help you trouble shoot wheather there is a physical problem with your laptop screen, video card, or if it is a software issue.

Well thank you for that information, I'm getting a new computer soon. I shall NEVER put it on sleep due to this.

are you seeing your POST screen? Sounds like either your screen of GPU went out.. or could be a loose cable that feeds your screen from the mobo.. which could of happeened when they put the new one in.

I see nothing on the screen. After I press the start button, it's just black.
I think it's unlikely there was a loose wire. My laptop was fixed about three months ago, and I didn't move my computer at all between the time it was working and the time the screen turned black. It just stood on my desk.

I'll bump this one time. Hate to have wasted almost a thousand bucks, but that's life I guess. :/
