Liquid`Jinro MLG National Champion, 6th Nov 2010

Look at your favourite player, now back at me, now back at your favourite player. Your favourite player will never be me, but if he is talented and practices hard enough and plays well enough to be invited to join Liquid, he could be on the same team as me. Look at your hands, now look at me - I'm multi-nuking someone. Now I'm holding a cheque.

When you're Liquid, anything is possible. I'm on a battlecruiser.

Liquid stormed MLG Dallas this weekend and laid down pure destruction in an attack led by Jonathan "Liquid`Jinro" Walsh, the new MLG National Champion for Starcraft 2. Securing 4/8 top spots, our home team dominated, and then some.

Not dropping a series throughout the entire tourney, Jinro knocked both the eventual 2nd Runner-Up (Pain.USer) and the Runner-Up (TT1) into the Loser's Bracket and then in an extended series once again outplayed TT1 when he came to the Grand Finals after winning the Loser's. With solid mechanics, some great multitask and as Day9 says, a different build in every game, Jinro came out of a few months of practice in Korea and showed the entire foreigner scene that he was a force to be reckoned with.

Of course, while the Godfather went straight to the topic, his brothers also took care of business. Starting from Day 1, Liquid members began a trend of only allowing themselves to be knocked out by other Liquidians (with a few notable exceptions, of course), and the pwnage was laid down brick by brick.

Hot_Bid invokes the wrath of the Starcraft gods on those who dare defy the mighty Liquid.
Thx Mrs. Tyler for the gosu signs!

Along with Nazgul's 2-1 win against Idra in the Winner's Bracket that surprised a lot of people, the Liquid wrecking machine was deployed and our home team secured more and more ground in every round they played. With Tyler, TLO, HayprO, Ret and HuK beating the likes of lzgamer, drewbie, axslav, Kiwikaki, Torch, gretorp, attero, machine, SeleCT and qxc on their climb to the top, the final standings saw Liquid with 4 out of the top 7 spots at the tournament.

Liquid's combined APM is now being researched as a possible alternative energy source.

Liquid didn't just run to the top though. They blinked, neural parasited, fungaled and nuked their way there, and in turn gave us some games to remember. Whether it's Jinro vs Socke on Oasis or Ret vs LzGamer on Metalpolis or Nazgul vs Idra on the same map, each of us has their favourite Liquid game of the tourney. From TLO's 6pool into 3 base transition to Tyler's force field usage, our boys in blue showed us an awesome time this weekend, and if you were crazy enough to miss those games you'd do well to grab the replay pack and put aside a few days to go through them all.

Superman's presence at the event got a lot of press.

MLG being what it is, we also made ripples in the mainstream media after the event with PC World and G4tv running stories and interviews on us, so read up if you haven't already.

The bulk of Liquid content from MLG though is in this weekly, and you'd be pretty crazy not to jump right away into our post-tournament feature, Dallas Demolished.

Liquid at GSL Open #3 Quals, 15th - 16th Nov 2010

TLAF-Liquid`Jinro, TLAF-Liquid`HayprO, TLAF-Liquid`Ret and TLAF-Liquid`HuK will take part in the GSL Open #3 Qualifiers next week in Seoul. After their great run at MLG we look forward to seeing everyone from our outfit in Korea qualify for the GSL S3, and we know you're waiting to see them on stream as well. Hang out on TL next Monday and Tuesday and read the results as they come in from Seoul. Liquid fighting!

Tyler and TLO to Dreamhack, 26th - 28th Nov 2010

TLAF-Liquid`Tyler and TLAF-Liquid`TLO will be flying to Elmia – Jönköping, Sweden for the Dreamhack Winter 2010 Starcraft 2 tournament.

TLO's return to Europe was announced last week and this will be the first major tournament he will play after going to back to Germany. The 5th place finisher at MLG Dallas, he will be joined by 4th Place TLAF-Liquid`Tyler, and together they'll try their best to dish out domination just like they did in the US. Stay tuned to up coming Liquid Weeklies for more information on Tyler and Dario's trip to Sweden.

This column is cross posted in the thread that discusses Nazgul's 4 Gate Blink Stalker build and is aimed at combating the misinformation that seems to be spreading regarding its origin and purpose.

There's so much inaccurate information floating around concerning this build. It's not at all constructed to knock out Idra. It's a general PvZ build I first used 5 months ago in the Beta. Nearing the end of the Beta when I was working on developing it I played Check (3-1) and Gerrard (2-3) in the Asia vs Europe tournament series. So the build has been out for a very long time but somehow the strength of it just never caught peoples attention. Ever since these games, most Protoss have been sleeping, ignoring stalkers and their blink ability for the most part.

If done on the right maps (Lost Temple, XelNaga, Kulas Ravine, and Metalopolis) it works well against all styles as long as you use the terrain properly. Straight up hydras are not a hard counter to it, if only it was that simple. If the blink build is executed well they come too late in too few numbers. The reason why hydras beat it so easily in the game on Scrap Station has got nothing to do with hydras specifically but everything to do with the map and how much freedom to power and surround it gives Zerg against this build. Replay that exact same game on any map suited for Blink stalker and the hydras come too late with too few numbers. For this reason blink stalker is pretty terrible on Scrap Station and before the series I had no intention to play blink on Scrap against anyone. During the series however I changed my mind because I felt Idra was dealing with blink pretty badly, and added to that thought I felt it was useful to get some last minute blink practice in in order to win the deciding game on Kulas Ravine. All this "he should have gone hydras every game" talk is incredibly shortsighted.

I have seen a lot of people complaining about the abusiveness of it on Kulas. If done well there is simply no way a Protoss should lose to Zerg on Kulas. Idra made a big strategic mistake downvoting Steppes of War, which may be tough ZvP but is nothing compared to how tough Kulas is. With the map vetoing system I would be crazy not to take advantage of such a strategic error by my opponent.

Usually when talking about an 'allin' build we talk about a build that if known to be coming can easily be stopped. This build on the maps where you're supposed to use it doesn't work like that. Your opponent no matter how good they are can know it's coming all they want but it will still come down to micro on who is going to win. I have practiced it over and over against every Liquid Zerg and also a lot on the ladder and nobody has come up with something that will beat it by default, making every game a tense battle all about micro and positioning.

The reason why this build hasn't been popularized at all is because I have pretty much gone inactive since the Beta and haven't joined any tournaments until last week when I started my MLG Dallas practice. Tyler's use of it against Idra is as far as I know the first public appearance of it since I used it in the Beta.

An interesting note is that the reason why Blizzard patched fungal vs blink is because they know how strong blink stalkers can be. Seeing that patch should have gotten Zergs and Protoss to think about this build already.
