Liquid`Jinro MLG National Champion, 6th Nov 2010

Look at your favourite player, now back at me, now back at your favourite player. Your favourite player will never be me, but if he is talented and practices hard enough and plays well enough to be invited to join Liquid, he could be on the same team as me. Look at your hands, now look at me - I'm multi-nuking someone. Now I'm holding a cheque.

When you're Liquid, anything is possible. I'm on a battlecruiser.

Liquid stormed MLG Dallas this weekend and laid down pure destruction in an attack led by Jonathan "Liquid`Jinro" Walsh, the new MLG National Champion for Starcraft 2. Securing 4/8 top spots, our home team dominated, and then some.

Not dropping a series throughout the entire tourney, Jinro knocked both the eventual 2nd Runner-Up (Pain.USer) and the Runner-Up (TT1) into the Loser's Bracket and then in an extended series once again outplayed TT1 when he came to the Grand Finals after winning the Loser's. With solid mechanics, some great multitask and as Day9 says, a different build in every game, Jinro came out of a few months of practice in Korea and showed the entire foreigner scene that he was a force to be reckoned with.

Of course, while the Godfather went straight to the topic, his brothers also took care of business. Starting from Day 1, Liquid members began a trend of only allowing themselves to be knocked out by other Liquidians (with a few notable exceptions, of course), and the pwnage was laid down brick by brick.

Hot_Bid invokes the wrath of the Starcraft gods on those who dare defy the mighty Liquid.
Thx Mrs. Tyler for the gosu signs!

Along with Nazgul's 2-1 win against Idra in the Winner's Bracket that surprised a lot of people, the Liquid wrecking machine was deployed and our home team secured more and more ground in every round they played. With Tyler, TLO, HayprO, Ret and HuK beating the likes of lzgamer, drewbie, axslav, Kiwikaki, Torch, gretorp, attero, machine, SeleCT and qxc on their climb to the top, the final standings saw Liquid with 4 out of the top 7 spots at the tournament.

Liquid's combined APM is now being researched as a possible alternative energy source.

Liquid didn't just run to the top though. They blinked, neural parasited, fungaled and nuked their way there, and in turn gave us some games to remember. Whether it's Jinro vs Socke on Oasis or Ret vs LzGamer on Metalpolis or Nazgul vs Idra on the same map, each of us has their favourite Liquid game of the tourney. From TLO's 6pool into 3 base transition to Tyler's force field usage, our boys in blue showed us an awesome time this weekend, and if you were crazy enough to miss those games you'd do well to grab the replay pack and put aside a few days to go through them all.

Superman's presence at the event got a lot of press.

MLG being what it is, we also made ripples in the mainstream media after the event with PC World and G4tv running stories and interviews on us, so read up if you haven't already.

The bulk of Liquid content from MLG though is in this weekly, and you'd be pretty crazy not to jump right away into our post-tournament feature, Dallas Demolished.

Liquid at GSL Open #3 Quals, 15th - 16th Nov 2010

TLAF-Liquid`Jinro, TLAF-Liquid`HayprO, TLAF-Liquid`Ret and TLAF-Liquid`HuK will take part in the GSL Open #3 Qualifiers next week in Seoul. After their great run at MLG we look forward to seeing everyone from our outfit in Korea qualify for the GSL S3, and we know you're waiting to see them on stream as well. Hang out on TL next Monday and Tuesday and read the results as they come in from Seoul. Liquid fighting!

Tyler and TLO to Dreamhack, 26th - 28th Nov 2010

TLAF-Liquid`Tyler and TLAF-Liquid`TLO will be flying to Elmia – Jönköping, Sweden for the Dreamhack Winter 2010 Starcraft 2 tournament.

TLO's return to Europe was announced last week and this will be the first major tournament he will play after going to back to Germany. The 5th place finisher at MLG Dallas, he will be joined by 4th Place TLAF-Liquid`Tyler, and together they'll try their best to dish out domination just like they did in the US. Stay tuned to up coming Liquid Weeklies for more information on Tyler and Dario's trip to Sweden.

This column is cross posted in the thread that discusses Nazgul's 4 Gate Blink Stalker build and is aimed at combating the misinformation that seems to be spreading regarding its origin and purpose.

There's so much inaccurate information floating around concerning this build. It's not at all constructed to knock out Idra. It's a general PvZ build I first used 5 months ago in the Beta. Nearing the end of the Beta when I was working on developing it I played Check (3-1) and Gerrard (2-3) in the Asia vs Europe tournament series. So the build has been out for a very long time but somehow the strength of it just never caught peoples attention. Ever since these games, most Protoss have been sleeping, ignoring stalkers and their blink ability for the most part.

If done on the right maps (Lost Temple, XelNaga, Kulas Ravine, and Metalopolis) it works well against all styles as long as you use the terrain properly. Straight up hydras are not a hard counter to it, if only it was that simple. If the blink build is executed well they come too late in too few numbers. The reason why hydras beat it so easily in the game on Scrap Station has got nothing to do with hydras specifically but everything to do with the map and how much freedom to power and surround it gives Zerg against this build. Replay that exact same game on any map suited for Blink stalker and the hydras come too late with too few numbers. For this reason blink stalker is pretty terrible on Scrap Station and before the series I had no intention to play blink on Scrap against anyone. During the series however I changed my mind because I felt Idra was dealing with blink pretty badly, and added to that thought I felt it was useful to get some last minute blink practice in in order to win the deciding game on Kulas Ravine. All this "he should have gone hydras every game" talk is incredibly shortsighted.

I have seen a lot of people complaining about the abusiveness of it on Kulas. If done well there is simply no way a Protoss should lose to Zerg on Kulas. Idra made a big strategic mistake downvoting Steppes of War, which may be tough ZvP but is nothing compared to how tough Kulas is. With the map vetoing system I would be crazy not to take advantage of such a strategic error by my opponent.

Usually when talking about an 'allin' build we talk about a build that if known to be coming can easily be stopped. This build on the maps where you're supposed to use it doesn't work like that. Your opponent no matter how good they are can know it's coming all they want but it will still come down to micro on who is going to win. I have practiced it over and over against every Liquid Zerg and also a lot on the ladder and nobody has come up with something that will beat it by default, making every game a tense battle all about micro and positioning.

The reason why this build hasn't been popularized at all is because I have pretty much gone inactive since the Beta and haven't joined any tournaments until last week when I started my MLG Dallas practice. Tyler's use of it against Idra is as far as I know the first public appearance of it since I used it in the Beta.

An interesting note is that the reason why Blizzard patched fungal vs blink is because they know how strong blink stalkers can be. Seeing that patch should have gotten Zergs and Protoss to think about this build already.

Anna is a REALLY good interviewer, for someone who's relation to starcraft is a fan/boyfriend of iNcontroL she really does ask great questions, and I'm sure it helps that she is a pageant winner, but she is just really well spoken, great in front of a microphone, awesome interviews of all the liquid members there.

Wow, unc's a really smooth interviewer. And LOL at the awkward moment after Hayder's 'we're not that close'.

These weeklies are so extremely great, please keep them going.

Naz, noone called your blink-rushes allin cheeses, atleast noone who can think straight. However what they definitely are is abusive builds to the hilt. I guess the only real counter to them as Zerg is one-base roach-ling-baneling and sunkens maybe with in-base hatch progressing into infestor-Baneling after delayed expo.

I think Inc is making Uncontrollable benchpress as well. Her right biceps are much bigger than her left.
Uncontrollable should be emplayed by MLG. By FARRRR the best interviews with gamer I have EVAA seen! Major major props.

Great work on the interviews guys, I saw ya'll doing these (in fact I am walking behind in one of them, lol). Top notch quality, as expected with how great your interviews were at the last event.

I really agree with Nazgul that the best player to win it from Liquid is Jinro, he's such a nice guy and really friendly even to strangers like me. I hope everyone does well in GSL3 and looking forward to seeing more great Liquid plays!!

Btw, the old spice parody is hilarious ^_^ two tickets to that thing you love.. look again, the tickets are now diamonds.

it's a complete all-in as you fully block your ramp and cut probes, not allowing yourself to get an expansion up running unless you either win or inflict supermassive damage.

by "all-in" i am refering to nazgul's 4 gate blink stalker strat. And i think we all know that idra is the type of person who can't adapt when facing a new strat, even though he is a great player.

Good writeup. I love that Nazgul cut right to the heart of the issue, not mincing his words at all. It pained me to have IdrA lose like that, but I will be very curious to see how that build is countered in the coming weeks. It is ridiculously strong at the moment and I think that will cause some interesting innovation from Zergs. I bet it will be all over ladder :D

Those were ridiculously well done interviews. I've never seen uncontrolable interview before, will she continue to do more interviews at these events or is this a one-off?

I think it was discovered that something like 5 games were played on the wrong map, but only Tyler's was caught by a ref in-progress so that's why it was the only game that they replayed. They decided that games played on the wrong map that were completed should stand.

Wonderful interviews, very interesting to watch, and Uncontrollable did an absolutely amazing as the interviewer. Usually interviews with Starcraft players seem kind of awkward, (or more commonly just text) but these were very well done. And djwheat in the Jinro interview was hilarious, totally out of the blue.

Huge congratulations to all of Teamliquid, especially Jinro!

They should have just let the game play out if they know that happens. As a Protoss player myself some of my favorite players are Huk, Nony, KiwiKaki, and Tester so I guess I'm biases but I think if a game goes past the opening minute or so than it shouldn't be replayed.

great job on the inteverviewing by uNcoNtroLable, you notice that she is used to speaking in public/ to cameras, those where the best player interviews I have ever seen in all of IEM, ESL, MLG and GSL, you should ask her to cover all tournaments.

PS: HuK you cheeky bugger, iNcontrol is gonna benchpress you if youre not careful :D

WHOAAAA...Huk I forgot until I watched these that you called the Nazgul>Idra match like you were psychic. GG!

Thank you so much everybody for saying you enjoyed the interviews. This has seriously been a dream of mine and if I get to do more of it in the future, I will be happy as a little clam. Being a host in e-sports would be a total dream job. My current job is privately consulting and coaching people in interview and public speaking skills, so it's really good to hear that you thought I was on the right track as far as questions and overall feel. Hope I get to bring you more!

I had SO much fun getting to know and learning from all the Team Liquid pros. thanks so much for taking time with me guys!

...And major props and thanks to Josh. He's the reason I even got to do these interviews, and the reason they turned out so well! <3

I was blown away by how professional the interviews were. Seriously I felt like I was watching some ESPN pre-game interviews or something. Uncontrolable could definitely have a future as a reporter. :D

Great work. I find myself looking forward to liquid weeklies more and more.

As many have said, really really great interviews. I wonder if uncontrollable or josh did more interviews with players from other teams. I should check his YT channel tmr. Now time to sleep.

Another great weeklies. Congrats again, TL!

The interviews were quality stuff, all of it. Good, informed and relevant questions, not too restrictive in their scope, allowing the players to say things. Excellent length also.

Really, MLG should hire you two to do post-game interviews with players, live on the stream.

It kinda looks like hayprO is a bit depressed.
Early knockouts everywhere and overall looking a bit sad.

Hope we will fight back in GSL3.

Awesome to see the interviews with all the liquid crew, uncontrolable also did a really good job being the interviewer.

At 1:25 his reaction to learning he was playing drewbie next was absolutely priceless.

Haha I was wondering if people would pick up on that. He looked pretty shaken... I felt bad to have thrown that at him mid-interview... but at least it gave the viewers a bit of the real life drama that was MLG.

Just wanted to say the difference having an actual professional interviewer to the content we usually see was outstanding. Great job Anna, I enjoyed every interview!

Edit Oh well I guess it's been said a couple of times already haha. Still.

I sign that.

Great interviews. Favorite moment was when in the team interview Nazgul was asked to comment on his win against Idra and said he practised a lot for the tournament. You see the whole team laughing and TLO almost fell on the floor laughing with someone shooting "you practised for 1 week!!" (you hear the exclamation marks)

Looks like they have a lot of fun as a team and they really seem to respect Nazgul as a manager with some great skills.

So, if it hasn't been submitted to that Ultimate MLG Feedback thread, I think the sideline updates/interviews/commentary at future MLG events should be done officially by Anna. She was so professional, I felt like I was watching an Erin Andrews interview. MLG would do well to hire her on. She came up with excellent questions (not sure if those were fed to her) but she came across as extremely knowledgeable and able to bounce questions off of answers. I'm sure everyone would love to have some sideline interviews to fill some of those MLG commercial x3 breaks.

All this "he should have gone hydras every game" talk is incredibly shortsighted.

So much truth in one sentence. Idra already said on SotG that hydras come in too few numbers early game to combat heavy protoss pressure.

So many interviews in this weekly...

EDIT: rofl HuK predicting exactly how Idra will lose.

It was really cool and you could see that you have experience with interviews. It was professional but had the right touch for an esport event like this. So it wasn't too professional and cold as sometimes interviews are. I hope you can do more like this in the future!

Maybe it's all in my mind, but did anyone else notice TLO's body language as soon as Korea's mentioned? He just went quite as soon as the topic switched to GSL and he looked quite gloomy.

Hopefully the return home will do him good.
Thank God and gunrun.

Afaik Kiwikaki used mass blink stalkers against Dimaga. Ofc it was a different strategy since he opted for a way later mid/lategame timing.

Wow, best liquid weekly ever.
Loved the TL group interview, it looks like they have a great dynamic going. You could really tell that Nazgul was the manager of the team also, can't quite explain why...but he was really professional in his answers.

I'm gonna echo everyone elses praise on Anna's imba interviewing skills. I was really impressed. She asked some great questions, giving room for some really decent answers. She should do more!!

Also, those team photos at the end really made me giggle :D

Awesome weekly.
I really liked the interviews especially the one with the whole team even though that one didnt have uncontrolable's imba interviewing skills. You could really see how this team fits together so well.
I think TLO and HuK have just some amazing synergy going on they are just so cool together its a real pity they wont be alongside in korea.
HuK if you read this: teach TLO how to play protoss and then he can start playing random again, that would be really awesome to see especially in high level tournaments.

I'm really, really glad to see all the positive feedback that the interviews are getting. Soon there will be 10-15 more interviews with players from other teams, so look out for those some time in the next 24 hours.

I wish I had played TLO. I was supposed to play him first round, but I was also competing in Super Smash Bros Brawl, and I'm not that good at SC2 in comparison by far, so I didn't want to be disqualified in Brawl. I went back and said hey Dario, gg, and all that, asked for a rematch. He said that would be fine, asked the ref, and the ref said okay. I had just walked around the side, and then tyler had to play a match, and he was using TLO's keyboard. I basically went FFFFUUUUUUU

Seriously, very well done interviews, and so many. It was awesome, the nony cameos were great as well lol.

In Huk's first interview though he was driving me crazy looking around everywhere. There must have been a ton of distractions for uNcontroLable to not keep his eyes focused.

The rest of the weekly was great as well, I love seeing these appear on the front page.

I gotta say kudos to uncontrolable for the interviews,
1 its great cuz she did actually do a good job
2 Its very good for the image of eSPORTs and SC2 in general if the material that most people looking around for a new game are gonna see, this gives a very attractive image of the gaming scene and thank God uncontrolable IS NOT some mindless IGN girl with a script, no background and no interest

Tyler is a lucky guy haha. His wife must be a doctor or something, only MDs are that busy lol

Looking forward to GSL3, I really hope Jinro makes it this time. He really deserves it. He kinda stayed under the radar in comparison to other liquid members but hopefully he starts getting the recognition he deserves!

And finally, go Ret, go Huk, go Haypro!

Anna Prosser did a great job with the interviews. She should do them for every MLG competition. Thanks for them!

Ha, here's some insider information. The reason there's a jump cut in the HuK interview is that some guy looking at his phone plowed right through the microphone cord and knocked the camera almost all the way over. Thanks to SunDevil for catching my tripod before everything fell apart. =P

Haha no problem. The dude seemed completely oblivious and didn't even help try to right the camera, he was a strange guy, though I could be mis-remembering. I do remember us discussing that you were going to interview me on day 3 though, and ditched me to hang out with TL, what was that about Josh? So BM after I saved your camera!

I guess you did redeem yourself since the picture you took of me vs strifecro was during the game that I actually won, so I do appriciate that.

Much <3 sir!

TLO with the sick call pre-tournament on Jinro. I guess it is a teammate, but still. Props! And agreed with the previous posts. uNcontroLable with the great interviews! A lot of the interviewers could use lessons from her!

TL should get sponsorship with a major airline, so they can fly the players for free to attend tournaments :D
