Hi all, I'd like to float a map idea I've had for a custom game which will have no custom units, only a few 'extra rules' to the melee.
Basically, I love the Day9 Funday where you announce your unit at the end of the game, and felt I could expand on it a bit, and put some solidarity to the rules of it - to make it fair..!
If anyone can give some input, would be great. Here's the basic idea:
You are presented with a dialog in which you select which units you want to build – for example, Marine, Marauder, Medivac.
A leaderboard shows at all times what everyone has 'selected', and also what everyone is 'producing'.
You are allowed to choose three units in total. Two units to build, and a third unit to trick your opponent. Or maybe not?!
For the next five minute you are only allowed to produce the 'producing' units. Any other unit being produced (other than workers, buildings, projectiles etc) will be sacrificed and you will lose whatever you spent on it. This, or I could just disable that unit from working.
During that time, you can bring up your dialog, and 'select' a different set of units (for example, you might have a factory or starport. you need to nominate tanks or vikings). After that five minute interval has passed, the 'selected' units become the 'producing' units, and you can no longer make whatever you had selected before.
This repeats every five minutes until a winner has been decided. It would be a 'mod' I hope to be playable on any Melee map.
This is my first new topic on TL, so let me know if there's anything I can do to improve it, and thanks in advance for any feedback

Interesting idea. I say just go ahead and do it because if you post on here, someones gonna troll you and make you regret it and no one can truly say if it's a good or bad idea. Curious though, is this for team games? Either way gl and post back when it's made don't just disappear.

Yeah. It could be used for 1v1s, I guess.. but you would think that a team game would make more sense.
For example, in 1v1 mode, it could be up to 4 units; in 2v2, up to 3 units, 3v3 and 4v4, 2 units each. I'm still tossing up exactly what the restrictions would be, so that's the feedback I'm looking for.

this sounds like a lot of fun, but to be true to the challenge it would need to be 3v3 or 4v4
it would ideal if you didn't allow anything other than the selected unit to be built (besides the exceptions, such as drones/queens/observers/overlords/etc)
it would be even better if you could allow morphed units (such as baneling or archon) to be somehow produced directly, to avoid people playing with zerglings/templars before morphing them in.
1v1 wouldn't work the same as the funday challenge, so i think you could do something like what you described in the OP being able to 'switch' the selected unit every X minutes, since they will not have their team-mates to help balance their army. in this case you could 'fake' it by not actually producing that unit and saving up for the next cycle.
btw I think you meant "announce at the start of the game" since they will already know by the end
