Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Tepco says they'll start making it so that they can fill the containers with sea water. I think. I'm a little confused, but I guess that makes sense?

At least, if this is to be trusted, it's very good news.
I can't imagine them lying about it.

Press conference confirms that there has been no increase in the release of radioactive materials or radiation since the explosion ~5 hours ago. Also stressing that the 20km evacuation zone is merely a precaution in case things get worse and does not present a danger at this time.

Edano says Japan will allow Fukushima plant owner Tepco to fill the reactor with sea water to cool it down, and that there was an explosion at the plant, but not at the reactor container.

how will they bring the sear water into the reactor, if the problem was not having the electricity to run the pumps in the first place?

The explosion is said to have resulted from hydrogen mixing with air within the building that houses the reactor but that the reactor itself is unharmed.

Someone died because their respirator stopped after the power outage.

I know power outages are really rare in Japan, but damn... that's a lot of faith to put on your power lines.

They reported bringing in agrogates (100 % miss-spelled). So they have electricity for the pumps. Since the main nuclear reaction is no longer active it's just a matter of time before no more heat is generated. The longer this goes on the better it gets.

Don't trust german news to provide reliable information about nuclear power.

We have BBC saying

1202: Government spokesman says the nuclear reactor container at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant has not been damaged, and the level of radiation has dropped following the explosion earlier on Saturday, AFP reports.

this is false, stop spreading bad info.

meltdown HAS NOT happened, all rods have safely been dropped to prevent this. the only explosion was the containment unit that was intentional to relieve the pressure building underneath. radiation levels have actually DECREASED over the past few hours according to the japanese press conference.

edit: confirmed from others that german news is reporting this, sorry for calling you out, it's the media's fault, there has been NO meltdown.
I now have autographs of both BoxeR and NaDa. I can die happy. Lim Yo Hwan and Lee Yun Yeol FIGHTING forever!

These kind of things probably happen in every country every time there is a prolonged outage.

Yeah german news seem to either know more than CNN and BBC or are just spreading wrong information. Judging by the article on spiegel.de it's the latter. They are already calling out a confirmed meltdown in the title, but writing nothing about it in the article.

Do not listen to any German media outlet, even the serious ones, regarding the nuclear power plants. Most of their reporting at the moment is clearly motivated by political issues.

Says the same on the website of "Der Spiegel", but in the article they never mention it. What a lame way to get clicks -_-

Critize the quality of the news as much as you like, but please don't start with political conspiracies. Come on. Keep it civil.

The Spiegel article is a "Eilmeldung", i.e. they're updating as fast as possible while just mentioning the development in the title. I seriously hope german media is informed badly and there's not a meltdown happening.

Seriously. The Spiegel title is "GAU has happened: Japanese Nuclear Plant meltdown". 2 headlines further down you have an article about the political reactions and how the opposition demands changes in our nuclear policy because of the incident. Those are obviously related and not a political conspiracy.

There will always be a political bias in media regarding nuclear power, even more here in Germany than in other countries.

But that is no reason for them to report deliberately wrong and misleading information.
