K, going to try again- most things are the same:
Budget
+/- 1000 I'd like to keep the desktop around that price as by the time I add the monitor it'll be 1150-1200.
Resolution:
Probably this: 1920x1080
Just hope my BW doesn't get messed up because of widescreen (end up with a tiny screen centred with a black border.)
Use:
Gaming- doubt I'll stream and not really into photoshopping. I sometimes do a bit of video editing however. Nothing extensive though- 10 minute shorts. I'd really like to be playing 4v4's in SC2 with no fear of lagging as I'm used to LAN parties from BW.
Upgrade Cycle:
Rather not replace it for awhile- but I also don't tend to buy that many new games that are graphically demanding- SC2 is the first new game in awhile. Run a bit of LoL, Minecraft and the occasional MMO on a whim.
Build Time:
Aug 15 in or around.
Overclock- Probably not. Maybe sometime later.
Operating System- yes, need one
Second GPU- no
Buying parts from:
NCIX- turns out they're based in Vancouver and therefore really close 
I don't really get how to do this build stuff.
I was looking at this default:

But going i5 2400 because it's only $9 more? But I'm really new to this stuff.
My main goal is to play BW and SC2 with no frustrations of lag and overheating, but error a bit on the overkill side as I've fought too long with underpowered and overheating laptops.

myrmidon,u recommended a cooler for 1manarmy yet u didnt mention one in the build for me. is that because of 6770 vs fermi? will i be ok?
another thing i wanted to say - 5670 pretty much ran sc2 on high yet you guys keep listing 5770 for low settings

NCIX system configurator is not that good. It's better to just pick parts on the normal web store, and pick the $50 assembly option (if you want them to build it for you).
NCIX sales change weekly on Wednesday, so no use linking parts until the week you're ordering.
On that budget, if you want no issues in 4v4, you may as well get a i5-2500k and leave the option open of overclocking that. It's not really necessary, but that budget also allows for more than the minimum case. You should be able to find something with good airflow and reasonable anti-dust measures.

Woah, thanks a lot. A question with pricematch- how exactly does one go about doing that? I suppose I'd have to show them the other store's price somehow? (Sorry, really newbie at this stuff.)

This depends whether you are purchasing online or in store.
If you are purchasing in-store than you just print out the page or copy the URL and have the store clerk do their thing. There's also the in-store price match button found on the component's page.
If you are purchasing online than there is a button at the bottom of your shoppnig cart that is entitled "Start Price Match." You click that and provide the URL and the competitor's price of the component. Someone on the other end has to verify this so your pricematch / order isn't processed instantly. So don't buy on a Friday or the weekend unless you want to wait until Monday / Tuesday.

Lol, cooler master elite is not actually a cooler! Do you guys work somewhere making money doing this? Your configs definitely save enough for someone to pay for it.

You could allso get an extra 120mm case fan to put in the front of that case, which will increase the airflow by quite a bit.

is the difference in the 6850 and 6870 that big? is it worth the extra money?

Depends on game and resolution. Depends on pricing. Just look at benchmarks and decide yourself.

right now on Newegg, an XFX 6870 and 6850 are only $10 apart. This is for SC2 and 1920 x 1200. i tried finding benchmarks for sc2 but couldnt find any.
ALSO: is overclocking the GPU worth it? is there really a big boost in performance?

Hello!
I just installed my new parts which include a SSD on which I've just installed the basics (Windows7, motherboard drivers, graphic card drivers). Problem : one of my 2 HDDs now doesn't appear in Computer anymore, it's most likely jumper related and I've been looking for a solution here and on google but I must be typing the wrong search words as I'm sure there are thousands of explanations but I can't find one that fits my case perfectly.
I previously had one on slave, one on master, can't remember which one was the one with boot partition - maybe the Master if there's any logic in it? I did it a loooong time ago (back when I loved to toy with computers - still do but just haven't done it in years) so I've forgotten quite a lot about how it all works.
I'm gonna be googling stuff but I'll refresh this thread every now & then to see if someone can come up with a good explanation. Right now my SSD is already the new boot, ideally I'd need to transfer all my settings and stuff from the previous partition but I'm not sure how to do that so I'll guess I'll just have to accept it and remake everything hehe.
[Edit] In case it helps (seeing "System" in front of the HD is making me wonder if I fucked up the installation?), here's a screenshot of what my drives look like in the new boot. The "Yatta" drive is the one I'm missing when I click on computer, but it's apparently there still somewhere. Jumper problem?
[Edit2] Nevermind, sorted, just needed to assign a letter. Never had that before!

Yeah, the Rosewill Green Series 430W should be up for the task. It's a good deal at $30.
Compared to the CX430 V2, it has a much larger +12V capacity and has 6 molex connectors rather than 3. You're going to have to use a molex -> PCIe adapter for the HD 6870, so it's handy to have a few of those left. Performance is definitely not as good as the CX430 V2, but it should definitely be in spec, and you can't really have it all at that price.

edit: I think 512MB DDR5 is better than 1GB DDR3 in general. It's the memory interface throughput that's generally more important. At that low resolution and without AA/AF, 512MB should be sufficient for most games anyway. Turn down textures a notch if necessary.
