no, we'll only forget about being a douchebag in the first place

lol do you not realise that people signed up to win a key after seeing this advertised on their gaming sites? not all people played starcraft and followed TL but a lot of people want to migrate from wc3 and other games, i dont disagree - i think that people in this community deserve to win the keys. however i find the competition a bit unmoral, it was advertised for anyone who felt deserving, (and cmon people that are entering every competition to win a beta key are most likely the most deserving),and now people entered are made to feel guilty. i think they shouldn't have advertised it to everyone, because in reality it wasn't

but hey it sure worked in getting more members, and im glad i tried my luck because now i found a good gaming community i had never intended to join

haha Hot_Bid you win on so many levels for creating this thread. This is thoroughly entertaining.

Shame on those who self-nominated knowing they had nothing to back it up. I hope you get cheese'd in RL (whatever that means).
Let fear be your compass.

I didn't opt out and I don't feel I'm better than any one else. I'm 99.9% sure I won't get a key, but I can still hope can't I?

Ironically, the reason I'm so late to noticing this thread is because I was playing SC2 beta at my friend's place until 6AM and just woke up, and not ignorance to the TL threads.

While I give kudos to the social experiment induced [and consequently being able to derive a social commentary from it], a lot of issues should be addressed.

It's true that many of the 1 posters [myself excluded] merely jumped on an opportunity to acquire a key, never to be heard from again. I'm pretty sure this includes a hefty amount of people who downloaded the cracked version and never will support this community in the future. But that's exactly my point. I realize there are people that have been supporting this community since its birth, and others that have been contributing for a very long time. Unfortunately, everyone needs a place to start. I detest the idea of going to a random thread, of a game which I have very limited knowledge of, and then proceeding to spew out random information that may or may not be true. It simply will not help promote a high level of discussion about the game. As a noob at SC, and speaking for others who are like-minded, I would rather be a listener until reaching a point of sufficient expertise to be considered, essentially, worthy to speak.

This is ultimately where a lot of hate falls, but the motivations of people who have not contributed much may be different on an individual level. Some may not care; some may just be looking for chance to win and never contribute again. Others however, may actually be seeking a way to improve themselves until they feel that the information they provide will benefit the community.

My point is this: you have no idea about each of these posters and "self-nominators" until after you see their posts or actions [or lack thereof, for that matter].

Now for who is deserving and who isn't. What does deserving mean to this community? Does it refer to people who have already contributed much to this environment and to the scene? I know that a lot of the veterans on these threads have done a considerable work to shaping the SC/2 scene. Clearly they are "deserving". But could deserving also be referring to those people who possess the potential and drive to be an asset to this community? They haven't done much as of yet, either because they were unfamiliar with TL.net, or because they possessed no valuable information to share with the community. But if they not only want to become better, but consistently make the effort to improve at the game and also try to figure out ways to expand and evolve the SC scene, then could they also be considered deserving?

I am a noob that is part of the group I just described. I want to become better, and regardless of whether I get a key from this competition, I will make the effort to improve and contribute to the scene.

But am I deserving enough to keep my name in this contest? I'll let the community decide. If you guys believe that deserving refers only to those who have already made an impact on the community, then I'll request that my name be taken out. If you believe that deserving also applies to the noobs that want to improve, then let my name stay. Thanks.

Wow when I noticed your PM about this thread my heart literally stopped lol. I am far from a selfish person but there nothing that I want more right now than a beta key. I mean hell I just got back home from pre-ordering my copy of StarCraft 2 at Game Stop lol. So with that being said, I would like to keep my name in the running for a SC2 beta key. Thanks again and good luck everyone.

Hey

I am new to this site, and immediately joined when I saw I could be in the running for a SC2 beta key. I know that sounds kind of selfish, but it is explained below.

In relation to my RTS gaming history:

I played Starcraft when it came out and I was very young so I never understood the mechanics of the game. I loved it and I remember hating Zerg because I was scared of aliens (thank you Alien movies), I never played competitively because I didn't have good internet connection at the time, and I don't think I would have been able to comprehend sophisticated strategies, nor would I have had the micro. I remember always playing Terran simply because of Ghosts, they were my favourite unit by far.

I got into Warcraft 3 as well, and played that competitively for a little while. But again, I was too young to understand intricate strategies and I didn't have the attention span to develop my micro management. I didn't get that good because I quickly became interested in DotA and invested a lot of time into that.

My latest RTS experience is Company of Heroes, where I can proudly announce I got into the top 10 in the world for (though the competition of the game is nothing compared to a game of Starcraft's magnitude). I loved that game, but imbalance ruined the experience for me (the Opposing Fronts expansion brought in the completely imbalanced British and Panzer Elite, and made some fundamental changes to the initial factions that screwed up balance further). Company of Heroes essentially got me very interested in RTS, and it's where I developed the desire to perfect micro management as well as create my own unique strategies.

So now I aim to move onto Starcraft 2, where the competition is much more fierce than Company of Heroes, also because some friends were Warcraft 3 players and told me Starcraft 2 is the next biggest game. Only recently I began watching Starcraft 1 and 2 replays just to see how insane the game is skill-wise compared to other RTS games - and I was very impressed. I noticed quickly that Starcraft 2 is a game I would be very interested in, and would devote a lot of time to becoming a competitive player.

Thanks.

Every single one of these guys has either 1 or 2 posts. What a fascinating social experiment this is turning into.

edit: I'm not trying to sound smug because I'm obviously a newbie poster too, it's just interesting how the longer people are on TL, the more likely they are to support the community by dropping out- goes to show how strong of a community TL really is.

I understand where your coming from, but just because I've only posted to this thread doesn't mean I'm only in it for the beta key. If I don't get it so what I honestly don't plan on winning it. That doesn't mean I can't compete for it does it? I literally found this site a month ago and ever since then I've been on here literally daily watching streams and contributing to the chats. I would absolutely love to help this community grow. Its just impossible when I am not fortunate enough to possess a beta key. Hints why I'm posting to this thread.
All I can hear are thousands of children screaming imbalance.......

They can change their minds.

I mean, if there were 20 keys and 25 people remaining, and the deadline was 5 minutes away, I'm sure some of them probably would drop out.

Yes, I've only been a member for so long. No, I've not posted alot, nor have I contributed anything. I just wonder, how does one support this community anyhow? Do you have to have a high post count, is the post count what counts as contribution? Then let me go spam some threads for a while.

Is it that one must go create a new fancy build order, if so, how many of you supporters have done so? Is it, perhaps, that one must make friends on this website? Is it that one must watch the streams on the site (because this one I do, alot, and have done so for quite some time)?

What is a contributor on this site? Or is it just the friendly chaps that you have been getting to know that are deserving? It'd be nothing wrong with that, I'd totally understand it, but does being your friend mean that you are contributing to the community? Of course it does in some way but not in any way that we newcomers could possibly do, since we haven't had the time to get to know you.

Also, there are several of you guys who say that we on the list should start talking to each other? About what exactly? "Hey, randomdude1 please give up your seat so that I could have it instead.", "Why don't you do it, Aldehyde? You could just as well do it instead of me.", "Randomdude1, we both know I am more 'deserving' than you are".

That's silly.

Okay, I finally caught up with this thread, and once again, the disappointment consumes me. It's obvious that for a majority of the posters, this thread is just a game; something used to laugh at the expense of other members who may or may not have really done anything wrong in the first place. Hot_Bid has repeatedly stated throughout this is not a thread for posters to gain face back. This thread is for members to evaluate themselves and cross themselves off if they truly felt that they didn't deserve it more than the others.

The mindless bashing is just astonishing.

I posted this way back in page 8.
On April 17 2010 16:33 IndecisivePenguin wrote:
Okay, I just read through all of the self-nominating posts in the original Nomination thread. Yes, all 29 pages.

And what I have compiled is my own personal list of self-nominators I feel stand out/are more deserving than the others. I will not be including myself in this list, for I do not have a place in nominating myself once again. I will leave that up to the rest of the community if they feel it fit.

lolaloc [Page 1]: He isn't at the top of my list, but he's definitely higher than many of the self-nominators for requesting the key as a prize for a local tournament instead of using it for himself. He seems to really want to aid the SC2 scene in the Philippines to the best of his ability.
nataziel [Page 3]: I don't see him on the list of people Hot_Bid put together on this thread, but he did nominate himself. He seems to have really put a passion toward the E-Sports scene, and really wants to do what he can to bridge the West and East together. I don't know if he would be able to, but I'd like to have faith.
chirievalord [Page 5]: Much like lolaloc, he says that he wants the key to help the scene in his nation/culture. His plan is to supply Spanish SC2 commentaries of high level play. I'm all for providing a service to your people.
Prozen [Page 15]: He seems to have already put quite an effort into sharing the knowledge he has acquired about SC2, and I feel that he will likely continue to do so if given his own key. Seems very interested in helping new RTS players find their peace with this unfamiliar territory.

addition: cloudJR: As someone else pointed out, he seems like he can become something of a positive addition to this community.

There were a couple others as well, but they are either not on the list, crossed themselves off, or are already nominated by others as well as themselves. These include jhNz and Chill.

After reading all of the posts, I realized even more that there are definitely many contributors out there who are immensely deserving of keys, and I hope that TL doesn't allow many of the keys to go to self-nominators, because there are so many out there that have already proved their worth to this great site.

And after going through all the posts I missed from last night, I haven't seen a hint that anyone caught it. Is it not obvious that this list needs to be narrowed down to the very few who actually deserve a key? (In terms of competing against other self-nominators)

So why hasn't anyone else made an effort to narrow those down?

There are going to be some people who don't care, and plan to stay in this competition for the little hope there would be in getting chosen, despite having no real reason to justify. But I'm going to say this now. You will not be chosen. As far as I know, this isn't going to be a random drawing, at least I really hope not. That isn't the right way to be choosing worthy people.

There's no reverse psychology here. There's no point in "saving face."

Someone earlier mentioned that those who opt-out will have put the TL community's opinion of them over the chance for a beta key. For some, however, I must disagree. To opt-out for this reason would be to admit that his post was unjust to begin with, and if that is the case, there is truly no "face" saved. For some that remain (not the majority, because it's definitely not), they sincerely believe that they have done something or will do something beneficial to TL, their people, or some other group in need.

I am having faith in everything Hot_Bid posts in this thread; that there is no trickery, this is a legitimate post, there is no underhandedness. It's irritating to have to read the same posts over and over again, suggesting reverse psychology, prejudging the list as a whole without even taking a look at the OPs, and blowing this thread off as something for your own amusement.

I have decided in my past posts and blogs to keep my OP in the original thread, but because a few have requested it and a few of you may be curious, here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RMOfZV1ekk
(HD quality not yet processed)(I did not notice how tired I was today haha. Oh well.)

Hey everyone, my name is IndecisivePenguin and I nominate myself for a Beta Key.

Now you guys are probably wondering why I nominate myself, seeing as how none of you guys know who I am. My name is Jason and I'm currently 17 years old. I don't have the history that many of you do. I also don't have the achievements. I don't have the reputation, and I don't have the community's support.

So what am I doing nominating myself?

I saw this thread get posted the very same day I decided to finally make my first SC2 Report video. I wanted to be able to bring all recent news and events to the YouTube audience, talking about everything important in SC2 that happens every week. Blizzard info, patches, tournaments, news, and important discussions going on in the SC2 world.

Why am I wanting to do something like this? Well first of all, I believe in giving back to the community. TeamLiquid has been, without a doubt, my home for all things Starcraft, and maybe even more. I'm not a veteran poster, but even in my days of lurking, I've found something of an attachment to this site. By doing these videos I hope to reach out and provide just a taste of what you guys have given me.

Secondly, we all start somewhere. I don't have high aspirations to become anything legendary in the StarCraft community, but I do believe it is a proper time for me to start making a name for myself. However, I don't gain very much for myself just by being recognized as somebody. I don't need this kind of attention. Rather, I wish to be something of a positive force in this community; something more than just another poster.

I know what this key means to every single one of us on this site, and maybe there are others that want it a lot more than I do, but I still feel that I deserve it. I don't want to just report news and articles that I find, I want to be able to connect with the audience by giving in-depth analysis from within the game. I want to understand that game, so that I may be even more effective in my goal.

I'm not going to lie and say I'm asking for purely unselfish reasons. I know very well that I will enjoy playing the game to the fullest extent, just as anyone else would on this site. But my use doesn't simply stop at my pleasure. By getting first-hand experience at this game, it gives me an opportunity to give back even more.

And this is how I see this nomination process; as an opportunity. I cannot express fully my gratitude to TL and everyone who's a part of this site for the opportunities they provide for us, in small ways and big ways. This key is a big opportunity, and I hope the community finds enough reason in my cause to give me one of the keys. And even if I am not chosen, I do have faith in this community that the keys will be given to those who truly deserve them.

Cheers to all participating.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

I don't want to get a key.

Im saying this to improve the chances of my friend Aerikr getting a key as Im confident in the fact that he is the one most worthy of it, despite how modest he's being about it.

Please give the key to Aerikr since he is such a great guy and a huge starcraft fan.

I have an idea, everyone drop out until 0 other people are left.

edit: accidentally hit post too early,
This would stop anyone from being demoted and everyone would be admired for this. Just a suggestion.

No. If the list isn't shaved down enough, nobody wins.
