TSL Weekend Tournaments?

Okay so first thing, yes I realize that the rules exclude tournaments but specifically these are iCCup tournaments that reward ladder points. I personally found one of the more fun points of TSL last year was people getting the chance to play with top gamers in a situation where they normally wouldn't. So heres the question probing for some interest here in the subject:

If I were to set up a weekend tournament next weekend and the last weekend kind of like I did last year but with no points associated. You don't lose points to enter, you don't win any if you win; would anyone be interested? More important would some of the higher ranked players turn out for the fun of a little bit of bragging rights pre qualification.

Poll: Would you participate in a non ladder TSL only tournament?
(Vote): Definately
(Vote): No
(Vote): Maybe if a few top gamers showed up.

Could you make it in such a way that it would be worth it for higher level players to play against lower ones? Seems like a gamble for someone who's A- plays someone who is D they aren't going to gain really any points and stand to lose a lot if they get 4 Pooled you know?

One of the things last year was that if the two players had a large rank difference they didn't play on ladder gametype but if they were close together they would. That way the lower players still got the fun of going against some of the high B players who attended but the higher players didn't really risk anything in the early rounds by playing them except maybe a slightly wounded ego.

Could you just give everyone like half the points of a same level matchup? That way:

1) Higher level players still get some points out of it
2) Lower level players don't really lose much because they are unlikely to make it up the ladder that far anyways.

Well part of the point here is that points arent involved from the admin side so that TL admins won't just say "no." to the whole idea. Since it's not an official ladder tournament players would be free to play on melee game type if the rank difference is too large for them. Basically wanted something fun mixed into the 3 week ladder period because that's a long qualifier stage and I feel like the tournaments last year were a lot of fun for those involved (even me with all the hassles involved in a ladder tournament.)

edit: Yes I realize it wasnt actually a year ago but it seems like it sometimes o.o

I don't think it's a good idea - it's way too easy to artificially inflate your points through tournaments.

Read the posts again, this is a tournament that WONT award points. Just a break in the action a chance for people to do a little bit of flexing and some fun bragging rights etc.

none of the top players will play so what's the point? I mean you can do it but I don't understand what you're expecting to get out of it?

Practice? and who knows, top players might do it just for the hell of it. It's just a fun little community thing, I'm down.

Thats kind of the point of this thread Xeris, see how much interest there is. Maybe see if any of them would show up because they did seem to have fun with it last time around. Even if none of the top players show up we can still have fun with it, 3 weeks is a long time for people to keep up the pace of gaming they've started with this first week. Having little things to break it up and have some fun can be helpful.

So long as no ladder points are gained or lost from the fact that this is a tournament, I don't see an issue with it. Your tournament would have to be highly informal though; for example, if someone wanted to leave the tourney, you couldn't slap them with a penalty for walking out.

Personally I don't see a lot of purpose to it, because I don't think high players are likely to participate (they really only stand to lose ).

Sure. But I doubt it will attract the best players since they don't want to waste gametime on no-point games, especially not a long tournament. But I'll be up for it.

Okay so people realize that once you get to A- mass gaming doesnt mean higher rating right? At A level games if you go 50% winrate you lose points because you're losing more points on a loss (140 I believe) than you can gain on a win on MOTW. Granted a certain amount of mass gaming comes into play but just wondering why everyone assumes nobody would show up (Besides the fact nobodys answered)

I think it be fun at the end of TSL if there was a tournament for everyone to play in just for shits and giggles. Kind of like the farewell games at the end of the olympics games. Make it like the iron man tourney when TL.net was giving away the beta keys. Don't make its 1v1 because the good players don't find it fun rolling us noobs anyway. Make it silly stuff like team melee/micro arena stuff. That way they have some fun too. Only thing is that takes a shit load of work. I'm not sure the mods are prepared to do all that. Plus you have to start spaming this news over TL.net like now to get the word out and get enough people to show up.

the problem is with a tournament .. u can play much less games than laddering and since u cant win any points for the tourney win it just makes very little sense to play it..
