I think part of that is just because Americans are trained by our media to see the worst in everything done in our country. It's just that outrageous stuff made in America tends to receive more media coverage generally and thus appears more often in the TL General forum. I'm almost fully convinced that all cable/satellite services in Europe carry Fox News Arizona and Florida in their basic tier. I live one state over (California) and I'm not as current on local Arizona news as some people from across the pond. I was just in Arizona early this month to visit the Grand Canyon, too.

Although I'd like to believe you, I seriously doubt that your media is actually efficient at relaying information. The infamous maps of Europe where Berlin stands at the place of Paris and Paris at the place of Toulouse are now well spread over the internet ... Though I know every media isn't prone to obvious mistakes like that, it discredit the whole profession in my eyes. If your media is trained to do something, it is to be very opinionated in every domain. I interpret the regular atheists vs. christians debate on the pic thread to be the consequence of that molding done by a lot of media.

To the contrary, I was accusing them of the worst kind of sensationalism, which has Americans trained to be offended at our own country. This ingrained behavior has us so busy yelling at ourselves that something REALLY fucking moronic has to happen elsewhere before it's crazy enough for most of us to see someone in a worse light. Obviously, not all Americans are that way, but a decent chunk are.

You are jumping to conclusions about our media because of a couple of screencaps. There are problems with our media but neither geographical illiteracy nor strong opinions about religion are really one of those problems. I find it extremely unlikely that our news media is primarily responsible for the vitriolic nature of the religion vs atheism debate in America; there are other aspects of our culture that explain that much better than characteristics of our news media could.

It's pointless and unfortunately results in a lot of otherwise unnecessary bans. Some of the people participating in the "conflict" are actually decent guys, but whenever national pride of any sort is on the line people get indignant.

Schnerf was just banned by Antoine. That account was created on 2010-10-09 20:15:11 and had 3 posts. Reason: You must be proud of your posts, the display of intelligence at the highest level of authority in that profile is so supreme, if you add all the good posts together then multiply it by the number of posts you'll make on this site after now, their number of posts combined... well, it'll be zero. GGWP, Antoine takes the series. Banhammer Imba.
