I'm getting sick of seeing naïveté, hostility, jokes, and other unrelated actions being labeled as trolling, and I'm sure others are as well. There's a thread right now in SC2 General with the OP discussing Carriers (in a manner indicating unfamiliarity with the forum guidelines, which is bad, but understandable), and the first reply is "Replay or troll." It's frustrating to see the meaning and context of a perfectly suitable phrase become inexorably perverted by the same sort of people who use "bonjwa" to describe anyone who performs fairly well at a tournament.

People seem to think that everyone on the internet is some sort of hyper-intelligent master of sarcasm and wit, when in reality, "trolling" is just a shitty excuse used by idiots when they've lost an argument (if such a thing is possible on the internet), or have been exposed as a complete twat. Sure, there is legitimate trolling, but I agree with Aeres that the term has become far too general, and certain people will just attribute it to anything that's out of line.
"Do not attribute to malice trolling what can adequately be explained by stupidity"
I love both of you for this. All of my friends and colleagues at school are on the bandwagon where anything at all is labeled as trolling if it is slightly derogatory, humorous, or even done in a joking fashion. It enrages me. It's getting on the same level as people overusing memes...that meme wedding proposal video that everyone loves actually enrages me. It's cool that he proposed and that she said yes, but still...come on. It's like everyone wants to be included in some secret club that uses memes and trolling and AAAAAARRRGHH.
That is my rant. Please, carry on with your holiday season.

When? When was this ever the case? And most importantly, among whom was this ever the case?
I've never heard of "troll" being so narrowly defined as to exclude anyone who wasn't actually good at trolling. This kind of "definition" sounds to me like people who don't allow the possibility of bad art by simply redefining the word "art" to include an accessment of quality.
Trolls are people who are trying to stir up trouble and get a reaction, period. Someone is trolling when they say something (regardless of whether it is their real opinion) in order to get a reaction from people. Whether they're good at it is irrelevant; that's what they do. You don't get a promotion from "trouble maker" to "troll" just because you happen to be sufficiently good at it.

You're right, it's when you are witty and intelligent about it.
See, I can take just one sentence out of an entire argument and base my entire retort around it too.

Huh
ArtisaBang was just banned by Harem.
That account was created on 2011-12-18 05:28:31 and had 195 posts.
Reason: Previously banned user.
t.t I don't know how to quote from different threads, 4k posts and still newb ><, but I was just wondering how it took 200 posts to find out he was previously banned, because he got a couple warnings I think for being an ass? not sure. Or do you generally give some leeway for previously banned users.
Only asking because I mostly see it as a reason in 0 or 1 post users banned, sorry if this is the wrong thread to be asking >.>

It's not always immediately apparent if a user is a PBU. Sometimes, it takes a PBU drawing enough attention to himself for a mod to do some research and make the connection. Fortunately, most are stupid and make themselves known immediately.

Ah, I figured it was mostly IP based, thanks! that makes more sense.

no, its IP based, unless you did something like change your IP they will know exactly who you are when you register.

Unless you have a fixed IP, which I don't think is that uncommon for the demography that uses this site.
Edit: You can reset your IP by disconnecting your modem if you have access to it (I use to do it all the time when I was watching online videos, but that was before I moved onto campus and then I got a fixed IP)

I don't think the TL mods take kindly to people who deface their mascot in any way. One guy was perm'd for saying "I dont really like ponies" in regards to animals.

Apparently the guy didn't actually draw it and didn't originally spoiler it.
Also really it's really disgusting and inappropriate.

It's furry porn from a subreddit. He posted it to get a rise out of people.
Thank you fusion for burning that term into my brain until my next drinking binge.

I could, but it'd take a while. I think some people were bitching about "This is what it feels like to be banned from TL" on r/sc and one of the guys said that. It was his first post I believe too.

That might be why. TL mods are normally quite suspicious of new users coming on and saying bannable stuff, because there's a far higher chance they are PBUs. Whereas if you've been around for a while, keeping your head down and only posting in fanclubs (well, not the Idra one..), strategy guides etc, you're less likely to get labelled as trouble and insta-banned.
I could be talking absolute bollocks right now, that's just my take on it.
