Letting it slide is soft because its easier. In real life using words liek that means it is fight time, at least aroun d here, online it just makes u a coward. It is not about being PC it about how ignorant and wussy it is to say shit like that online. That a bunch of ignorant nerds thought (and some still do) that that was hard is embarrassing. I would hope now that were not 12 it would have been figured out. when did i say using the word faggot made you "hard"? i never said anything of the sort i said moderation standards have gotten soft. what dmcd is correct, the word has always been offensive. that doesnt change the fact that there was once a time when these forums let use of offensive or crude terms slide because tbh most of it was just banter between young gamers.

They were soft and let little wusses feel tough on this forum by pretending to be tough guys, with no actual experience in being hard they assume it is by being ignorant. Now the mods are not soft and people have to live with the consequences of what they say. I hope more of the internet moves in this direction. I'm sure most of the people wouldn't speak the way they write in real life because of those consequences. My preferred result is that people say shit like that got punched in the face, which has been what often happens in real life, but since that is not possible here, we live with what we got. I see no value in people ignorantly insulting each other online, it so low and boring. Where is the wit? People like that not being here is a win. i understand what youre saying now. you want the forums to be moderated so that its all flowers and rainbows and that result satisfies you because you think mods should have no tolerance against shit talking behaviour. i will admit that i find that incredibly boring (and hugely out of character for a site that was founded on gaming), but ok. thats your opinion. whilst i appreciate the civility of the forums at times i still equally enjoy banter/trash talk and overall less sensitivity when engaging in casual conversation. reading the posts in that blog was highly enjoyable for me; not just because telecom got exposed but because of all the unmoderated shit he got for it. thats the kind of stuff that brings gaming forums to life

Do you see why that’s an odd thing to be upset about? Im not upset, far from it. My second paragraph was aimed at the posters of TL, not the mods. The mods are just enabling these people to clutter up the forums with virtue signaling. Any normal person gets turned away from active participation and this has over time lead to less people staying here. Forums in this format have become a relic of the past in general and im sure this is less atractive to younger people these days. But gatekeeping just turns what little is left away. When I joined TL something like 12 years ago now there where less people on than today, but the passion of the young staff and freedom of expression was there and that allowed TL to bloom after SC2 came out. If SC2 came out today people would check out these forums and be turned away. My two cents.

Well that or the initial forum dwelling generation upon widespread internet uptake was one generation of mostly young white dudes and was never really going to last? I’m not going to lie and say I didn’t enjoy some of the shit talk and banter in my youth, stuff I wouldn’t particularly condone today but that does feel mitigated somewhat by being internally contained within one rough cohort of people. It’s different when the groups that get thrown around as slurs and insults or are referred to in derogatory terms become part of the community, or they don’t and the freedom becomes its own gatekeeper. Society has changed a lot too. Even as a young child with no real understanding of sexuality ‘gay’ was liberally used as an insult on the playground, and I’ve never heard my kiddo ever use it. I’d assume partly because homosexuality is so normalised.

Do you you hear these things on the regular in your day to day? Do you think most people want to use them but cant/don't? Have you considered that maybe most people don't because they find it distasteful and wrong? TL is not shrinking because of mods and users making ignorant and hateful people not welcome. They don't ban that many people, they ban a few people many times! While I don't approve using these words on a regular basis, I must say that people shouldn't get offended by anonymous people on the internets. Also it shows more about the speaker when they have to use such terms. But maybe I'm just too insensitive after the years on the internets, especially since I started at CS which was quite offensive place(and I believe it still is :D )
