The OP went on to list his education and "achievements" which consisted mostly of the fact he is a Paleontologist and has done some work in archeology and related fields. More on Ponera + Show Spoiler + The actual thread was fine, and for a time Ponera seemingly had a lot of fans and adherents. The rest of us kept quiet until people had finally had enough of him. As soon as one or two people had been honest with Ponera he had a complete melt-down and started abusing people left right and centre, particularly opterown and claiming that the TL+ IRC channel had it in for him. In his paranoid mind people were ganging up on him in there like some sort of snippy clique and then attacking him in other threads. The guy was notorious for big-noting himself, including remarking that he made $100/hr, talking misogynistically about his female conquests and at one stage using the poor choice of words "I thought I was paying for friends here" while trying to express the fact that he felt attacked and that TL+ was meant to be a place that had a smaller community feel to it. He had a recurring tendency to claim that other people were jealous when they criticised his behaviour. Interestingly he also created a TL+ Self-Esteem thread. It was no surprise that he had rather massive self-esteem and insecurity issues. Eventually his AMA thread became a list of regulars asking him questions consisting of memes from his past comments. Some additional background: he started taking it out on opty because his AMA thread became an opertown/opteron/poperton/etc thread. But their first interaction was Ponera making opty an example of someone who comes in to IRC and everyone says hi. I don't understand it either. It's unfortunate the Ponera AMA thread got locked though. If you were there when it got derailed, it was hilarious. | ||

I like to think that because my original criticism predated his going beserk that I somehow set off a chain reaction. But that's probably a conceit. Guy was always going to go off the rails. I imagine most of his forum experiences and live friendships end this way. | ||

And although it felt like people were ganging up on him, he brought a lot of it on himself. Not to mention that heaps of people have to put up with getting roasted, kollin being a prime example. The difference is that the kid handles himself with so much more class that the thread quickly becomes serious and affectionate. If Ponera had been able to laugh at himself he would have diffused a lot of the criticism/jokes. | ||
