This thread is for discussing recent bans. Don't discuss other topics here. Take it to website feedback if you disagree with a ban or want to raise an issue. Keep it civil.NOTE: For those of you who want to find the actual ABL thread where the bans are posted. Please look in here: https://tl.net/forum/closed-threads/ |

No, the real question to ask is how many people have to be banned before they stop making threads that inevitably turn into religion circlejerks. The answer is infinity.

A lot of religion OPs start off with the best of intentions though, can't blame OPs for threads getting derailed.

I dunno, I'm expecting that thread to be closed rather than to be chock full of bans.
It's just the same posts circulating ad nauseum with no direction or argumentation. The OP is poor and, though probably is justifyably discussion worthy, if discussion doesn't start happening within the next page or so it will probably be for the chop.
I can see one, probably two outright ban worthy posts in there, but other than that its fairly vacuous. As has been said, due to recent banning culls the number of trolls and terribad posters in the general forum are fairly thin at the moment.
But c'est la vie:

Who's bringing up a grudge? I was intentionally leaving it out. This thread is EXACTLY about people poking at bans and banned users. Saying who you were before, in this thread, is literally inviting that exact kind of scrutiny.
Although suggesting that my intense dislike of you is affecting my logic borders on a personal attack, given that you can't even fault the actual logic apparently, and have to argue by pointing to the fact that I don't like you.

There are just some people who are more predisposed to making OPs than others. The ban traps are usually created by somebody with a preachy personality. I'm at 2500+ posts and not a single one is a new thread. Honestly, I don't get the mentality of low post people joining TL so they can create low content OPs about controversial topics.

What kind of scrutiny? There's a difference between what TheToast posted and what other people post in this thread.
Are you honestly claiming to be a completely fair and impartial individual? The second part of your post reads like a non-denial denial, lol.
Hint: if I dislike someone on TL, the last place I'd pick a flamewar with them would be in the ABL thread. Anyhow, that's all I'm going to say on the matter. If you've got other issues with me please PM me. Thanks

And the circumcision thread got closed, with nary a ban.

Is it paranoid to suspect that some of these low post count people are those guys you hear about that are paid by political parties and lobby groups to influence/measure online oppinion?
I have always wandered this, is it likely or am I straying into tinfoil hat territory here?

I didn't see Toast's post, since it was edited out. I just have a description of it.
You're the one implying I'm so juvenile as to drag issues from elsewhere into things. I was deliberately trying to leave it out of things. The fact that you're trying to morph that into me making personal attacks is just insulting.
And yes, a PBU showing up in the ABL thread, saying who they were, should reasonably expect to have their prior posting history dredged up. That's what this thread is all about. Check the times I've been banned. People come in here to snicker about it.
This would be like a pro gamer claiming their smurf accounts and then complaining that people played to counter their playstyle once it was out.

My immediate thoughts upon reading this:
"Oh God, another circumcision thread?"
A quick check to the General threads didn't show it. So I didn't even bother clicking on the full list; I just scrolled down to the Closed Threads. And what do you know, it's right there.
Didn't even fill up 2 pages.

Honestly, I think mods will often leave a bantrap thread alive longer for the longer term goal of drawing in a few more bad users; sometimes they'll just be lazy and close it quick.

I disagree, I think that if they really sense a discussion is worth havng then they will weather the bans in the hope that real debate will out and keep the thread open.
From what I see threads will only be closed of the OP is total rubbish or discussion fails within a few pages.
They're an altruistic bunch.

On the topic of religious threads that are bound to end in tears: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=363841.
I think in general religion threads are always going to fail because you have a lot of people with completely opposite views who want nothing to do with the other side. I know I'm like that so I stay out because there is nothing to gain in entering.

This is funny because many of my most interesting and profound conversations have happened with people who are deeply religious. Why can't that happen on the internet?

The OP in that thread sounds like something that Deleuze was talking about. I think I'm getting paranoid as well. For the record, affinity_12 is the only poster I can recall who got banned for that type of advocacy. The advertising bans are people hawking their streams or websites. I don't recall any other ban for lobbying in behalf of a mainstream corporation, political party or activist cause. I would imagine such a ban would generate a lot of discussion on this thread.

I've had a lot of similar conversations with people, not over the internet. I guess there is something about being in the same room as someone that makes people actually listen to what they are saying. I always try to explain my thoughts on a subject rather than preach them but every time I've got into a debate on the internet, about any topic that where people have strongly held beliefs, me not agreeing with their personal view is the greatest offence I could have committed. So after a while of getting called a fucking idiot and various death threats I just gave up with trying.
