I don't mean to dredge this up again, I know it's a bit off topic, but I feel the need to say something. You know, I realize the ABL is gotten pretty spamm-y, I'm not super happy about it, and yeah it needs to be addressed. But staff is partly responsible for the state of that thread, there's been a lot of instigating. I should point out that it was two veteran staff who encouraged the 5 solid pages of toast puns. I can also think of an instance of a staff member posting funny IRC chat logs, a staff member advertising their blog/interview, etc.
I think we can all (including myself, definetly) do a bit better job of respecting the thread and it's topic. But staff especially have a lot of power to influence the tone of a thread, and should keep that in mind when posting.
But there also needs to be a little respect for the natural evolution of a community. That thread's off topic-ness (honestly, often encouraged by me) has lead to some pretty awesome moments. A perfect example is the ABL mafia game that's going on right now. ABL offtopic-ness has spurred a couple community members (including myself) to put in some work hosting a mafia game for some newbies who are being introduced to the mafia community for the first time. Certainly some will like it and play again, strengthening and growing the Mafia community. That's awesome. It's also gotten two people involved in working on Pony Tales, generated some cool blogs, and also led to some all around epic moments. It has contributed to the community as a whole, and maybe that's why a small sub-community has formed around it. Don't be so quick to wish it back to "the way it was" on page 200 when it was all bans all the time. It's evolved to something much more than that.
Is it too 'clichy'? Absolutely. As with any part of this community, it needs to be directed and moderated appropriately. That's why I'm a bit bothered by this "allow whatever as long as it stays in the thread" attitude just as much as the 'moderate with an iron fist' attitude. Staff would never take that stance with any other part of TL, so I'm a bit disappointed that they would do so with the ABL thread. I'll say it again, you all have a lot of power to influence the tone of a thread. Mani used to be the one who'd step in when discussion got too far off topic or way off base, no one has really done anything similar since he got too busy. Do you think there's a coincidence that the thread has gotten rediculously spammific since then? We very much rely on you all to keep the peace and order on TL, even in the ABL. That's why most of us have such respect for the TL staff and what you all do.

I can't report staff and I can't ban people. What's more, since I have no authority, I'm not likely to be able to simply halt stupid discussions (toast puns) by saying "Stop being dumb".
Plenty of the off topic crap can be done in your IRC channel, and then a single post can be made like "hey we decided to have ABL mafia come play!" instead of 3 pages of "we should ban the losers" etc etc (I know I contributed a post to that discussion but whatever).
And I'm not saying go back to page 200, but I am saying when the topic is "BANS" and nobody talks about a ban for 10 pages because they are busy with puns, hamsters, mafia, and other crap, it's ridiculous. You're all treating the thread like an IRC room.

Which is why I stopped posting as much as I did, I used to post (derail) a lot there, then the state of the thread got really annoying and I started trying to bring it back on topic by only posting about bans but it's pretty hard when I was the only one doing it and just now when the Hamster thread was opened I commented about it meaning less off topic discussion and I get a response like this:

And still no staff steps in to stop all the offtopic nonsense but instead they make remarks about it here which is just stupid when they really have all the power in the world (warning/ban button or thread lock) to end it right there.
The IRC-channel has existed for weeks now which should be enough of a reason to slap warnings to remind people to keep their random one-liners there.
I also think that the reason the topic has gotten into a really sad state lately is the 1000 page celebration, which lead to some retarded spammage which once again was caused by a staff member promising special bans to anyone posting into that page.
Sorry for once again derailing this thread but I really don't want to make a website feedback thread yet about this before trying to get the thread back on track with the sorry asses that I call the ABL gang(tm).
