TTC opens at 6 AM too btw, so you're not going to be able to get there in time if you have to use the TTC. I don't get why people are so unwilling to meet up for these things, they're really unique times and always super fun. I've driven 6 hours round trip several times for league finals, and I never regret it. We usually go for dinner, go to someone's house, play smash and other xbox games, drink beer, talk about starcraft, play starcraft, watch starcraft. Hell, at the last one there were some guys who didn't even play Brood War but they still had a good time watching with us. I'm pretty sure Mikeymoo's gf had no idea wtf was going on but still seemed to have fun. If I was at my parents' place I would go for sure. Sadly, I'm in Calgary now :X
Might as well surpass that 6 hour round trip to a 4 hour flight home for this

I just mean logistically. Getting a reasonable internet speed + them allowing you to connect a laptop to their projector are both things I wouldn't see any theater allowing.
I'm not saying It's going to happen, I just need information to see if putting this on would work out, I've got an amc theater that will do it if I can get permission from Gretech (I'm trying to do that now) and I've got a few smaller locally owned theaters that I have to get in contact with.
It would be a valid idea I think if it was at 6 PM. But 6 AM, I doubt you're gonna get a lot of people leaving their homes for this.

I'd just scrap the idea, get a few friends together at your place with a big monitor or something if you wanna do that. But paying for a theater when it's highly unlikely for more than a handful of people to show up probably isn't the best decision.
EDIT: Like Chill mentioned, university lecture hall would be a far more realistic idea. You don't need the extra room a theater provides at all and the lecture hall will have wireless internet + a projector. That said, if you're not a U of T student (or Ryerson I guess) I don't think you'll be able to book one. And I dunno if they actually unlock the rooms that early or if you'd be able to convince someone to unlock it for you.
All in all, the timezone difference just makes anything but a private gathering pretty hard.
Not to mention it's cold as fuck in Toronto now. It snowed three days ago...
I know however I expect that for the first half an hour will be preshow stuff like season 1 (I think most people will be alright missing interviews with the mothers). As for a lecture hall I'm looking into it.

Eh, if it was at a reasonable time I'd consider it. The last thing I want to do when waking up at ~5 AM to watch Starcraft is make myself presentable in public then walk into the delightful Canadian winter to go watch it with other people.
And under no circumstances would I drive 6 hours to watch Starcraft with some people. I guess I'm just not as hardcore...maybe I'd make the 6 hour trip if it would take me right to the stadium live. Equating it to the Superbowl, I would definitely make a multiday trip to be able to watch the thing live but I wouldn't drive half a day to some friend's house in another city to watch it with them (unless it was an OUT OF THIS WORLD party - but let's face it, amazing Superbowl parties are unlikely to happen at a SC2 finals gathering).
U of T students I find are also less willing to really go out of their way to attend events and stuff. The work just really bends us over and stretches out our assholes =\. I guess there's a reason we always place last in student satisfaction.
But yeah, if you really want to do this I'd suggest lecture hall. You don't need the giant room of a theater, the screen in lecture halls is already plenty big, there's no additional hassle of trying to find internet at a theater, and you might be able to entice more students living on campus. Not to mention it will probably be free as well (again, not sure if you are not a student).

This is an awesome idea actually. I would pay 20-30 bucks easily to watch it on a huge screen.
If you can get this done at say AMC Yonge or something, where they actually have digital screens and get the stream going there it would be sweet.
I don't know how you get an entire theatre open at 6am for a bunch of guys who want to watch video game streams though...

Hi, I live in Toronto and am so interested. I had been hoping to do similar things (arranging a live showing of the GSL finals), so if you need help with planning, coordination, etc. I'd be more than willing.
I have no gripe with paying, nor do I have a problem waking up early to see it (in spite of the fact that I have the premium service and can watch at home in my underwear). I imagine watching these in a big group environment would exponentially increase the fun level- enough to justify the lack of sleep required (it's not like I wouldn't be up anyways).
PM me if interested

This sounds really awesome.
Prepare to have the GomTV stream lag and be forced to watch TUski's re-stream though.
|
Yea, sounds amazing. I go to Ryerson so I should be in downtown anyway.
|
I have class at 8AM or I'd come out for this.
|
if this is gonna fly then im definitely down. i go to mcmaster so if any1 from mac or in the hamilton area can give me a lift, that would be super awesome
|
Sweet idea and it would be fun to attend, though i'm stuck in saskatchewan.
Something doesn't seem right though. The stream is paid HQ right? I doubt gomtv would be ok with anyone charging a fee to few this in a public theatre. Maybe I'm wrong?

wow u have saturday classes? at 8AM????

the HQ on the big screen is going to look so trashy re-streamed

The timing and location are, of course, of particular issue to people who live uptown (me) but I guess not everybody wins. That said, I would go to this as long as I find a place to crash the night before because commuting will be pretty impossible.

Also the responses from this thread so far are great, I'm glad people like the idea.

I would go if you could get a room at the AMC Theatres in the Toronto Life Square or any Ryerson lecture hall. I'd pay $10 dollars towards the rental of the room and consider it a movie ticket.
|
If this goes down, I'll be there. Also, I go to U of T, so I might be able to help getting a venue.
The issue is that the tournament starts at 6 am eastern time, and the ttc doesn't run until then. Most people don't live within walking distance of any venue we pick, so most people would miss at least the first two games.
However, what's possible is to record the high def stream and show it at a more accessible time. We could even get a few people to cast it over Tastosis, which would add so much atmosphere, having it seem live.
|
I live at University of Toronto Mississauga campus. To be honest, I would wake up at 4-5 am and make the drive. As long as there is free parking, I'm happy. I'll pay if there is a lot of people just because more people = better atmosphere = worth something (such as money).
