Laptop High Temp (AMD A8-4500M APU/7670M GPU)

fastfast Canada2 Posts April 27 2015 01:16 GMT #1 So my HP laptop has been running fairly hot for a while now (specs from HP's site). It feels warm doing basic things like internet browsing or word processing. Gaming or sometimes streaming video makes the laptop noticeably hot just to touch. The laptop is about three years old. HotS gives about 15fps once things are going on, and that's not even in a 200 supply fight. Here is everything from Speccy The CPU is definitely not running at 111 degrees. The thing would have fried itself if that were true. It's only rated to operate at 100 degrees I believe. CoreTemp reports it at 0 degrees, which is confusing. The laptop should use the integrated graphics and also the dedicated 7670M when it runs an application that has been designated as 'High Performance' (I've done this for any game I've tried). I think I should be getting better performance than I am. Running the prime95 stress test i can't get a proper temperature reading for my CPU. Is there another program I can try. RealTemp won't work with this CPU and CoreTemp doesn't seem to work properly. Speccy is probably lying. Running the Furmark stress test gives me about 11fps. I don't get any GPU temps from it or MSI Afterburner. I'm not sure what I can do to diagnose the actual temperatures. The fact that I can feel heat coming off the laptop isn't great and indicates I have to fix something. I figure something must be wrong internally. I'm sure there is a ton of dirt/dust on the inside. The laptop is three years old, could there be a problem with the heatsink on the CPU or the GPU? How would I go about fixing this? Without actually having any proof I figure either the CPU or the GPU (maybe both) are thermal throttling themselves and seriously impacting performance. What can I do to make this laptop run properly?

You could use that to blow out the dust from the outside, but I don't know if this isn't pretty dangerous for the fans because they'll be pushed around forcefully. To thoroughly clean the machine out, you can open it. Search for a Youtube video where someone demonstrates this for your laptop to see what this means exactly. EDIT: I tried to search for videos and I don't know if I found the right laptop model but this seems pretty annoying to disassemble enough to get to the fans for me. I guess I'd just hope that the can-of-air works.
