Yeah "outperform" with this kind of CPU is 120fps vs 140fps. Obviously CPU is more important for SC2, but its not like you need a 4670k@4.5ghz to play the Game on Ultra o_0 3.8ghz vs 4.7 is more of a.. 30fps vs 45 in high supply 2v2*, so it's pretty relevant. Increasing graphics settings is super easy, low runs surprisingly similarly to ultra in high supply situations as long as you compare them with the same physics/effects/reflections settings and have an adequate GPU *I'll post a vid! Is super cool

For USA prices that would be a bad deal, I'm building a 400-500 rig that is better in every single component for about $50 cheaper.

The GPU just kind of sucks to begin with. It's like 1/4th of a GTX 770. If it includes a Windows license, that's pretty decent. Otherwise, that's kind of close to the cost of components. If your aim is to play stuff on low-medium, it should be bordering on reasonable at least. If the graphics card doesn't hold much utility, then it's definitely not worth the money. It has Windows 7 with it. I was also hesitant on the GPU since it looks like its an entry level If you were in a 500$ budget, would you consider it? *Take note that my friend has a total of 1000$ budget, but he is only able to spend 500$ for now *He wants to replace his computer ASAP (in other words, he doesn't want to wait until he has the 1000$ ready) A few posts ago, I was flirting with the idea of buying : mobo, CPU, case, power supply and RAM. Using either the integrated GPU, or his old GPU (8800gt), using old HD and using old DVD... And when the other 500$ become available, then we can consider buying a new monitor, a new GPU, and maybe even a SSD

EDIT: I just checked, and the current NVIDIA drivers still support that 8800GT.

We used the conventional oven trick twice to bake his card in order to 'ressurrect' it (artifact issue)

Also, earlier I was mixed up. The k series models don't have better integrated graphics than the others this generation. Most desktop i3/i5/i7 parts should have GT2 configuration, HD 4600 specifically. If you don't need the drive and OS, I'd take the individual pieces route. Otherwise, that i5-3350P computer looks decent enough.

But the coolers presented are AMD's stock coolers, wouldn't ASUS/Gigabyte/MSI/Sapphire make quieter heatsinks for the 290? Look at this thread: http://www.overclock.net/t/1439731/bored-of-waiting-for-none-ref-290x-check-this-simple-cheap-fix He posted pictures of how it looks like in the thread. That aftermarket cooler seems to work A LOT better than the original one and fixes all problems. The VRM temperature readings are probably off, though. Here is something about the 290 with a different cooler: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-r9-290-review-benchmark,3659-19.html

This is about the most significant performance gain (well, for a given noise level) from GPU aftermarket cooling there's been in a while.

big ass win for AMD (minus them being stupid about their cooler), the GPU market looks like it's gonna go through price cuts

big ass win for AMD (minus them being stupid about their cooler), the GPU market looks like it's gonna go through price cuts 780's went from ~£500-530 to dipping to £380 with constant availability below £400, waiting on the non-ref 290's to undercut. Ref is £320, but it's not worth it if you gotta pay the same price as a good 780 model (after getting a custom cooler and fans, though i hear accelero's don't cost that much), because 780 is better 1080p card. We shouldn't have to mod stuff for basic function, delidding and replacing coolers on such expensive hardware because there is no other decent option is silly. Kind of worrying to see both parties crippling their high volume parts like this and arguably for both the 4770k and 290x, their flagship parts. There would not be such gains (i'm seeing >30c drops reported with noise levels cut to half to a third) unless the cooler was bad enough to be completely out of place on a high end card

Well, it just hearkens back to GTX 480 days. It's not possible to make a case-exhausting blower cooler any quiet when it has to deal with that much heat, when you limit it to standard card height and two slots width. The aftermarket stuff usually takes 3 (sometimes 4) slots. Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme III is around $70 and the Gelid Icy Vision Rev. 2 around $50. It's a significant amount but not all that much compared to the graphics card's cost.

I built myself a PC two years ago and I was thinking about an upgrade. Any input is appreciated. What is your current build? Kingston HyperX 8GB DDR3-1600 XFX 1GB Radeon HD6870 Dual Fan Intel Core i5-2400 Asrock Z68M/USB3 Motherboard 250GB HDD What is your monitor's native resolution? 1920x1080 60Hz Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade? Just general performance increase and better linux driver support. Specifically I want an nVidia GPU and maybe an SSD if I got money left. Doesn't have to be ultra-fancy, something I can expect to play games on high to medium settings for a few years. What is your budget? 300-500 euro What country will you be buying your parts in? Germany If you have any brand or retailer preferences, please specify. As I said, it needs to be an nVidia card.

I'm using several retailers for buying other parts for the whole rig, and there are no price differences for the CPU so i have some choosing room. (idk if it will be possible to check some obscure number on the die itself, but i'm hopeful about manufacture dates or serial numbers) So far my google-fu failed in gaining me insights on this, so some help or even just a link to a relevant discussion would be much appreciated.
